Finheaven QB
OK, everyone knows that I do not support Feeley. I have left no doubt about that. And before I get into this I will say that Gus definetly out-played him last night.
BUT...Feeley didn't do as bad as I expected. He has a good arm and puts lots of zip on the ball and the ball gets to the reciever in a hurry. Feeley's biggest problems are: He is less mobile than Marino was in his last two seasons and he, without question, locks onto his reciever early. He either plain CAN'T or doesn't KNOW HOW to avoid the rush and by time. He neither steps up or to the side. He just stands there. That shows lack of pocket awareness.
He is fairly accurate when he throws. Thompson dropped a nice pass. The pass was a little high, but extremely catchable. Very Thompsonesque. Overall, Feeley did pretty well considering it was the first pre-season game, there was no game plan, and he was pressure.
As for Gus, he was under the same type of pressure. But he unarguably showed more poise. He was much smoother and easily looked more confident. His arm is at least as strong as AJs and he is at least as accurate. He will obviously take more chances to get the big play and shows confidence in his recievers to make plays - which is what the WRs are paid to do. Gus looks off defenders better. Feeley MAY be able to pick that up. The discouraging thing is that Feeley - (although he hasn't played in that many PRO games) - has had plenty of time to learn the art of looking off defenders. That is not something you learn just in games. He has had 6 years worth of camps, preseason games, and about 20 games in the pros and his college years to learn a very basic QB skill. Looking off defenders is one of those things you learn early- from High School on and he still lacks the ability to even TRY it. He has to get better at that. HAS to.
Frerotte got a little lucky last night on his TD pass. I have to say that i thought that Frerotte had made a good throw based on the postiion of the defenders. If I were him, I would have kept my mouth shut and left the TD alone. He gets points for being honest about the throw though.
Basically, from both sides, the QBs are being bashed/praised too much. Neither of them had the benefit of great blocking, effective running or a game plan. Looks to me like Chicago actually game planned for this game and we just went in to the game just to try to get a feel for some things and get out healthy - which we did for the most part. Saturday we'll see a little more. And as the preseason progresses we'll enter the games with a set game plan. Then, we can evaluate better how each QB will do. But last night, overall, Gus got the edge for sure.
