With both Brees and Culpepper needing alot of time still to recover from injuries, would it be a smart thing to dump Gus? Monetarily speaking it makes complete sense, but if we cut him before any of those guys are healthy than we're left with Cleo Lemon to run the show.

I think if we get Brees (or Culpepper), then Gus will be gone at his current salary. We will either get him back cheaper, or sign someone else.

i'm not entirely sold on brees or culpepper and just keeping frerotte and going QB in the draft...but i'm probably the only one to think that.

I've been wondering about that too. No matter who we get between Brees and Culpepper, they may not be ready to start the season. If that's the case, do we put Cleo out there? Where do we find money to get yet another backup, esp. since the better backups are already being signed, interviewed, etc. and we are not doing the signing or interviewing? We coulda kept Sage for another year and cheaply. Hope we don't regret that move come Sept.

Brees WILL be ready for the training camps and the start of the season is what every one is saying. I'd definately try to keep Gus but he's gonna have to take a MAJOR pay cut.

Ideal scenario would be to resign Gus for < $1 million to hold a clipboard. I think chances are he's got the idea into his head that he's actually a starter in this league and will try to go elsewhere. If I had to make a prediction I'd say he'd test the FA market and then end up resigning with us after the draft.

If we dump Gus I think we draft a Qb in the draft!

There is no way that Gus stays at the $7 cap hit as a backup to Brees or Cul...no possible way...They have either already worked out a renegotiation with him that will be announced at the same time as the new signing or he'll be cut when Brees or Cul are signed....

I would like to keep Gus around as a backup, but I think he will ulitmately end up in St. Louis with Linehan. Gus knows the offense very well, and Bulger has never been able to make it through a full season. Maybe Bulger makes it because he won't be in Martz's pass-happy, low-protection scheme, but I think Linehan brings Gus in to make sure Bulger and their draft choice last year, Fitzpatrick, have a mentor.

As for our situation, we'll have Brees or Culpepper, Lemon, and probably a drafted QB. Is it ideal? No, but at least Brees will be able to take as many reps as he can possibly handle to learn the offense, and when he needs rest, Lemon can take the snaps he needs to get familiar with the 1st teamers.

We can only hope that Frerotte will be cut - regardless.

Brees will be ready to go full speed throwing by July - August at the very latest. I know this injury. I've had an almost identical surgery and it's all about stretching, breaking up scar tissue over the first 3-4 months post-surgery to get the full mobility back, then building strength in the shoulder - which would give him May, June & July. He's already ahead of that schedule.

Culpepper should come back, but he will likely not be ready until mid-season at the earliest. He may need an entire year to recover. That's why I'd like us to go with Brees.

It sounds like Gus has been left hanging so I think Saban will get around to resigning Gus when he knows what happens with Brees and Culpepper. I think if we get either one Gus would have alot of value and I'm sure he knows he wouldn't be signing for a starters salary even if in the case of Culpepper he may be the starter this year

I say we try everything we can to keep gus as a 2 string qb just to be safe

I read some where that Gus was finding there was no interest for him from the rest of the league. Can you imagine that. I think Gus will stay a fin for less money. We do need a back up.
