I never could understand why players that are looking for every advantage would play with long hair. Imagine playing in the rain or snow how much extra wieght your carrying. Not to mention giving your opponents something to grab on to.
Ricky's dreads with the black visor were badazz but football should not be a fashion statement. Just my opinion.

Nice topic, but some players wear dreads due to cultural or personal reasons. Football is only a small part of their lives.

Because something unique/different leads to recognition = fame & fortune. Hair, tats, talk, stunts, etc. makes you stand out.

Why do you think football players used to pull their helmets off after making a play ... & do outrageous stuff in the end zone?

A prime example is Dennis Rodman ... a defensive player who has more recognition & celebrity/earnings power than most sports stars. Even has his own name, "The Freak". Another good example is ocho-cinco.

P.S. In another thread someone said dreds & long hair was unsanitary & why would anyone do that .... guess we'll have to check with the ladies!!

I don't know about the hair thing. I don't think it matters.

From the article

"All four players admit they feel a little lighter out on the field without those dreadlocks weighing them down and notice their head moves with more freedom inside their helmets. Smith claims he lost two pounds just by getting rid of his dreads and realized he cut down the odds of an opposing player tackling him by his hair should he intercept a pass and take it back for a touchdown."

Personal statements are ok but tatoos or piercings do not slow you down. As far as it being a cultural thing i doubt Sean Smith has rastafarian roots.

True in some cases but mostly it's just to attract ladies. If football is just a small part of thier lives i don't want them on my team.

did you see the part where smith cut his because he was worried about being tackled while returning an INT? hopefully cutting his hair allows to a.) actually get an interception and b.) return it for a td.

 exactly what I was thinking.

I think Sean's problems are between his ears not on top of his head. i cann't believe he used to play wide reciever in college. More drops than Marshall the last two years

I'd rock some dreads, but usually when you see a white guy with dreads it either looks ridiculous or it fits right in with what they do "squatting". There seem to be a lot of dread heads and squatters in the Asheville, NC area from what I've seen. Kind of goes with that vibe down there though.

I have dreads. When I play basketball really doesn't feel like it slows me down much, and I'm not even in top shape like these athletes. I don't think it makes much difference if any. Playing in the rain it would.. If you ever had wet dreads, you'd know how heavy it was. Very heavy, especially when you look up. A lot of top NFL players have dreads/long hair. Heck even Kenneth Faired has some crazy long dreads and is one of the fastest hustling PFs in the NBA.

Sean Smith didn't even have dreads either. He had cornrows. Wasn't like he had Davone Bess dreads hanging out his helmet. Shouldn't have been that scared of getting tackled by his hair.

A huge no **** moment...but is that mcdaniels pubic hair :-/ I blew up the picture on my phone and noticed..wear some briefs man

A better helmet fit???

I don't know. Seriously, do I read like a rocket scientist, or neuro surgean? I am famous for being a terrible speller, and a talking head (a loquacious joker), among other negative attributes/habits that I am sure would be of less interest than whether a bald headed dude chooses a specific hairless style. Maybe he enjoys those old television broadcasts of Kojak. What about lessening the heat during the summers down here. Maybe his babe gets all hot and bothered with hairless man. Or, even if they earn the mega bucks because of their on field performance, economical troubles could force them to save money by ignoring the barber shops.

I'll stop typing now. Sorry.

Football is just a game, period.

I don't want to get all philosophical on a Dolphins site  but... is is just a game therefore a persons beliefs or religion could rightfully be put in front of this game(coming from a non-religious person) and if they did see football as a small part of their lives I wouldn't look at them any differently. Actually, it would show they have actual character and not just a player in a helmet. Ricky Williams wasn't all that interesting- until we found out that his persona had some depth to it. You can't categorize the majority of guys with dreads as just doing it to "attract ladies" because you don't know all of their personal reasons for it. With that being said, the ones that do should shave it just for the mere fact of aerodynamic advantages and some other reasons listed earlier like weight issues etc etc.. just my 2 cents
