Handy 32-team CAP space chart - Dolphins 5th best

Hate to burst your bubble but according to the wizard JLC this number will be changing soon after some big movements soon..... :chuckle:

There's lots of room for Miami to get something done successfully this offseason

Interesting list....thanks for posting!

I recall an interview with Bill Polian last year where he was reviewing CAP management stuff. Basically said a team had to leave about $5M available each season to sign their draft picks for the coming year. Something to keep in mind when looking at these numbers.

For all the complaining about Dawn Aponte, it appears she has us in a pretty good spot this year despite Wallace's huge contract hit. Nice job.

With Albert supposedly in competition for us with Arizona, They would be one and done IMO for bigger FA if they ended up with Albert.

It should be fun to watch.

Our projected net need on cap space for this years draft is just under #2M from over the cap. Teams also want to keep around $4-5M going into the season for injuries or trades.

Another thing we need to keep in mind with salary cap space is our restricted and exclusive rights free agents that we may issue tenders to.

Restricted:

Danny Watkins
Will Yeatman
R.J. Stanford
Pat Devlin

Exclusive Rights:

Armon Binns
Michael Thomas
Jonathan Freeny

My guess is that all three of our exclusive rights free agents will receive tenders which would eliminate roughly $1.5 million from our cap space.

For our restricted free agents, I highly doubt we would bring them all back and I could actually see a scenario where they let them all walk. However, my guess is that Devlin will be brought back and maybe one of the offensive lineman. Brining back two of them would knock roughly another $3 million off the cap depending on the tender level they apply.

So, we could be looking at losing $4-5 million just for our restricted and exclusive rights free agents.

With the cap becoming so high how in the world do Pittsburgh and Dallas have a negative hit? Talk about spending out of control.

To put what we can do in this year's FA in perspective, let's take a look at what we did last year on cap hits.

Grimes- $5.4M

Clabo- #3.5M

Wallace- $3.3M

Clemons- $2.8M

Ellerbe- $2.4M

Wheeler- $2.4M

Hartline- $2.1M

Keller- $4.2M

Gibson- $1.8M

So, the first year cap hits for these 9 players totaled about $28M, with Grimes, Clabo, and Keller being 1 year deals totaling $13M and coming off the books this year.

We can do around the same this year, and maybe even more.

In general, 4 and 5 year contracts in the NFL are only 2-3 year deals in reality. Based on guaranteed money, teams are done with their obligation at that point, and never intended to pay the big salaries on the back end but, they still do show up on their salary cap.

Other times, teams overspend in thinking they can make a playoff run, and they will worry about the cap later. Not a bad thing IF it works.

It's always about guaranteed money.......not the years and length of the agreement.

There are many knowledgeable Phans who think that when a players signs a 5 year $50M deal that means that he is gonna cost $10M a year for 5 years. and it is not the case. The first year is gonna be at a discount with a signing bonus, and he likely will get paid about half of the deal.

Scary to see the Colts up there. If a Tannehill develops into a true franchise QB, Andrew Luck could be the Jim Kelley to his Dan Marino for the next decade.

Dallas has already stated through their GM Jerry Jones that Demarco Ware will be cut due to his salary. That will help them tremendously.
I would still look at those teams at the bottom of the list that are in cap trouble for a player or two.

I was thinking that too.
