Through a mutual friend I got to hang with Vern Den Herder at his place last night.

Wow. Just, wow.

What a guy. Very polite, he and his wife were very kind. I live about 25 miles from him, and knew he was around, but didn't want to annoy him. I imagine he gets it quite a bit. But our mutual friend told him about this insane Dolphis fan, and my father, son and myself were invited to his home.

I cannot say enough about the man.
Memorabilia, pictures, incredible. Spent the evening talking Dolphins, football, and hunting.

Absolutely amazing. We're still reeling.

Thanks Vern. I owe you.

I would love to have conversations with some former Dolphins. That is awesome. Did he say anything about this years' team or talk more about his time in the NFL?

You know, this year's team didn't really come up all that much. I did say I have expectations that had better be met. He laughed.

He talked quite a bit about his playing days. How the Astrodome was a miserable place, and Earl Campbell was not all that fun to tackle. How I really thought that they had the Skins after Fulton cranked off that return just before the half, and he said he thought so too. The San Diego game, the fake field goal when Strock took the snap, got up, and threw a TD to Vern. Dan Dierdorf, Conrad Dobler, having hell beating Oakland, Shula, Garo, Earl Morrall (my father's favorite), Strock (my favorite), on and on.

AND HE AGREED WITH ME THAT THE UNIFORMS NEED TO RETURN TO THE ORIGINALS!!!! IMMEDIATELY!!!!

What an awesome experience that must have been - thanks for sharing. He's one of the most underrated Miami defenders of all time and one of my personal favorite players I grew up watching. Sounds like he's an awesome guy to invite you over.

My wife grew up down the street from him. She said he would come out and play catch with all the kids. Also let them come in his house to see the bottom of his pool (because it had a Dolphin logo on it).

That is some cool stuff right there, THANK YOU for sharing with us :)

Good to see Vern is doing well. Lucky you for getting to visit one of the awesome Dolphins from the past.

I'm one of those old enough to have watched his career....steady, reliable player surrounded by the flashier Manny Fernandez and Bill Stanfill.

Great memories of that incredible team that was so smart and didn't beat itself.
