Hank Goldberg on QAM just said...

But ck, i think they almost MUST allow him to get away with this....at this point we absolutely cannot afford to go through the season with out him. Maybe one of the young guys plays light s out and we're fine but, that's a big risk...too big for superbowl aspirations.

you got your second post in before I did...so my last post was in response to your first........

But Rob Burnett and Jay Williams may or may not beable to take up the slack from losing O-gun....Burnett is old and ya gotta wonder how much he's gonna be able to give...and Williams probably wouldn'
t be able to provide the pass rush that O-gun would.....

How do we know that though?

We traded for Jay Williams with the notion in mind that he would probably be our starter, and Rob Burnett would function as 3rd down specialist viz a viz Trace Armstrong. Neither one of them actually disappointed us in TC last year, its just that Ogun tore it up in preseason action. I know D-Bo was originally slated as the starter, but that was heading INTO training camp pretty much and I remember the articles written at the time saying pretty much stuff like "If the season started tomorrow David Bowens would be starter..." but they pretty much said it as if everyone expected this to changed and the only reason it hadnt was because he was the incumbent...only guy still on the roster from 2001. They weren't about to snatch up guys for veteran minimum or low round trades and declare them starter immediately anymore than they declared Sammy Knight starter immediately. All new guys (unless they are big money, big trade etc) gotta battle incumbents first, thats the way to keep the locker room happy.

Anyway, if Ogun looks like he's gonna hold out, then I'm sure they'll sign a veteran for depth, go with Jay Williams and Rob Burnett at the position and see what Lamanzer and the new veteran can do. And that situation, is pretty much exactly where we were heading into the 2002 season...because we regarded anything Ogun did as just gravy.

O-gun and Rosenhaus have not said he is holding out or that Bowens' injury is giving them any leverage. Rosenhause has said as much on T.V. As a matter of fact there was a problem with attending mini camp because he was not signed and was not insured for injury. They cleared up that minor problem and O-gun did not miss work. Everyone likes to knock Rosenhaus but his clients don't hold out and are usually signed early. He has the ability to correctly evaluate a player's market value. That's the reason some of his clients take a pay cut or sign quickly for less than some fans thought the contract would be. There have been no reports of ill will between the Dolphin front office and O-gun. Granted camp is only a few days away but with no bad reports coming out they may be just waiting for other contracts to fall in place to offer the most incentives possible. Incentives for performance is a good idea. I think it has worked out well with Ricky and JT.

Ogun is not Ricky, and he sure as heck isnt JT.

Anyway the only reason this is all brought up is cuz inside reports are comin out about Oguns contract situation being difficult. He hasn't SIGNED his EFA tender yet...to my knowledge.

This means, he will not report Thursday. Sorry, but nobody reports without contract, insurance will not cover you and I dont even think the NFL allows it. So yes, we're talking about a holdout here. And according to Goldberg if you read the premise of the thread, the rookies should be signed but Ogun could be a problem. This means supposedly, Ogun might not sign the EFA tender by camp time, which means he will be holding out.

Thats why we're having this discussion.

I don't know why you are twisting everything I said and I don't care. I know full well what the discussion is about and gave my opinion. I don't think he is going to hold out and told you why I thought that way. Camp is only a few days away and we will see what happens.

I gotta admit, I take a few pot shots a Drew now and then. But the more I've looked at it (and read posts), I realized that he's a very good agent. His guys sign quick. They don't hold out. He's like Miami's personal player agent.

He may be a dork sometimes. But he's a likeable agent.

That said, I don't think Wally will hold out. I think he'll sign his tender at the 11th hour. And from there, they'll continue to negotiate a contract, possibly to be signed in the middle of the season.

I was just reading about the Eagles expecting to get all their rookies in camp and the ramifications of the Rookie Pool Allocation from someone else's perspective and they started taking about agents too. Here are some quotes from top NFL personnel people.

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/football/6321046.htm

Banner has had a pretty good relationship with Rosenhaus. But the frequently contentious Doug-las negotiations put a strain on that relationship. On several occasions before the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end signed with the Jaguars, the Eagles accused Rosenhaus of fabricating contract offers from other teams in an attempt to get the Eagles to raise their offer.

Both Banner and Rosenhaus insist that is not an issue.

Rosenhaus is one of the league's more flamboyant agents. He's also one of its most successful, representing more than 75 players. Most NFL club executives enjoy dealing with him.

"He's very good at what he does," said Bill Kuharich, the Kansas City Chiefs' director of pro personnel. "He knows the value of his clients. He knows what he can get for them and what he can't. Some guys are deal-breakers. Drew is a deal-maker."

"Drew gets deals done, I'll say that about him," Bills general manager Tom Donahoe said. "He does a good job for his client. He'll fight for them.

"But when push comes to shove, he will get a deal done."

Now even with all this B.S. Rosenhaus is quoted in the Miami papers today saying he can't promise anything for Ogunleye. Go figure.

I think it would be hard to be an agent now in this day and age. Leverage or no leverage, O-gun will get more than he deserves for a player. He needs to get this done with drew already.

O-Gun had a good year last year. But, my contention is, was his year better simply because of Jason Taylor's presence on the line? I'm sure it helped out a great deal. So if JT wasn't there, I'm assuming his numbers would of been lower.

So knowing this, if OGun were to go to a different team for more money would his numbers be lower? Well, from one perspective yes. So he has the added benefit from playing with a really good defensive line. Should he be compensated for that? Eh, close call. He was part of that great line, and he received good fortunes from it. But it would be a completely different story if he were on a different team. His value changes depending on who he is playing with. No different then any other player. So since most EFA's are given the minimum, why should he be any different?
Hell, I'll take their offer! :)

You are right EFA's should get the minimum contract as that's the labor agreement. But are you also against adding incentives for reaching certain levels of play?? Such as $125K for getting 13 sacks??? This way the player is paid the minimum but is rewarded for excellent play. As you know these are just sample numbers for discussion purposes. Or should only restricted or unrestricted players get incentives??? Last year O-gun made $300K with $75K of incentives which he probably earned with a 9.5 sack season.

Wally's agent, Drew said on T.V. that if they don't get a better contract offer, Wally will play anyways..
