And every other decade began in a year ending in 1, because the calendar begins with the year 1, not the year 0.
2000 was the last year of the decade that ran from January 1, 1991, to December 31, 2000. 2001 was not only the beginning of the next decade but also the next millennium. It's only been nine years since the decade switched over. We have one more to go.
Remember, guys, the very first decade of the Gregorian calendar ran from January 1, 0001 to December 31, 0010. It did not run from January 1, 0001 to December 31, 0009. That would have meant a decade that consisted of only nine years, and as we know, decades are ten years.
