Just a theory here, but isn't it possible that Saban is showing interest in Harrington to make it appear Daunte won't be ready? I know we'd be interested if the price was right, but for a 3rd round pick..fuhhget about it! IMO, any further talk of Harrington to MIA is to throw off our competition. It's almost a gaurentee we won't know if Dauntes starting till gameday.

That would be an awful lot of time and energy to waste actually negotiating with a player and coming up with "fake" contract offers just to blow a smokescreen that teams would most likely not even pick up on.

One of the sillier conspiracy theories I"ve heard.

I dont think its a smokescreen I just think the deal is going sour. We do need a decent back up and as you said there is not gaurentee Daunte will be read by by the start of the season.

If Harrington and the other QBs are a smokescreen, it's about getting a QB in the draft. I'm not sure if that QB he's targeting is Cutler, Croyle, or somebody else. We'll see.

Why would he do that? Other teams would know if Daunte was ready or not and I wouldn't think the smokescreen with Harrington would serve any purpose.

You guys try to make every decision we make a "smokescreen" or a "Nick Saban is playing poker" thing.

Is Ricky Williams getting traded a smokescreen?
Is Vince Young visiting Miami a smokescreen?
Is Harrington a smokescreen?

Why in the world would we waste so much time and energy on mind games?

Mind games are necessary from time to time, and the payoff is exactly what you see here. When somebody uses them once, it creates doubt from then on out. There is no way to know whether Nick is creating a smokescreen or not until after the fact, but it's something we have to consider unlike back in the Wanny days.

Uh, no. They need a good backup QB.

I dont see what value of strategic misrepresentation is in this case.

Ummm - it's not a smokescreen if - had the Lions agreed to either (a) a seventh round pick this year or (b) a sixth round pick next year - then the deal would be done. Harrington has already agreed to the 2yr $5M terms offered by the dolphins...

Well judging by the decisions I've seen Nick make they all may be. First theres Braylon, then Allen signs and NO ONE saw that coming, Daunte for a 2nd when EVERYONE thought it would be Brees. So lets not be to critical, anything is possible with Saban. As far as wasting time goes, he did bring in Vince and I highly doubt he will be a Phin.

Looking on our current roster and seeing Cleo Lemon as the current #2 QB, sorry, but I can't even come close to agreeing with you. We are in desperate need of a backup QB, and a veteran at that in case Culpepper goes down or simply is not ready for the start of the season (God forbid we're in either situation). This is why we have a backup plan in Jamie Martin, and hopefully Kerry Collins as well, because Tommy Maddox is butt.

I'm not debating whether or not we need a back-up QB that is, well..obvious. However, my point is we won't be the team to overpay the Lions as other teams are still looking for a starting qb. Just saying from this point forward I am personally off the Joey H bandwagon and I don't see Saban bringing him here unless Millens demands decrade drastically.

Does Miami actually need a veteran backup?

If Pepper seriously is on pace to start the season, why not draft a QB to be a long term solution as a backup? It would certainly be cheaper and would fix the problem for longer than Harrington would.

I know I have been assuming that Miami needs a veteran backup, but Nick very well may feel differently. He has better facts than I do, so I'll trust his judgment if that is his call.

Lemon has shown nothing to anyone yet so I think you have to bring in someone who has at least taken some snaps in the NFL in case Pep isn't ready or gets hurt again during the season. I'd hate to see the Phins rolling along then Pep gets hurt and we have to hang our hopes on Lemon. I'd feel better knowing a veteran is backing us up.
