It boggles my mind that the dolphins have not utilized his arm to stretch the field in the pre season and as a result we had a sub-par performance in the Buccs game.

Is there a possibility that the dolphins are calling plays that are designed for Pennington's arm strength and not for Henne? Maybe this is the reason why Henne has not made any throws that are more suited to his style of offense?

It's really frustrating to see that his "cannon arm" has been non-existent throughout the pre-season. What do you guys think?

Maybe Henne just sucks. Or maybe the WRs can't get open deep. I don't think the playcalling has anything to do with it.

Just because Pennington runs our offense doesn't mean we don't have plays that have receivers running longer routes.

I think it's more that preseason is a chance to evaluate your players, and sometimes that means calling plays that highlight a particular weakness in order to practice it. Sometimes when Henne looks bad, it might be because a play was called in which the receivers had a hard time running their routes, a blocking scheme that notoriously gives certain O-linemen problems, etc.

On the Henne side of the equation, it does seem like that practice buzzer has hurt him. He's not going through his progressions - he seems to make his first read (maybe it's deep), and then the play sort of breaks down.

If he can't work the short game, what makes you think the long vertical game will be any more succesfull?

Think about it

Wow...talk about reaching.

He is struggling and it is not b/c they are calling short passes. He should be hitting the WR's short, mid & long. But he needs more time, let's hope he is there before Chad P gets hurt or is gone.

Reaching what? I am sincerely asking for your opinions. I am not trying to make up any excuses for Henne. Just trying to get input from members more knowledgeable to see what the problem is. It was very frustrating to watch Henne during that Buccs game.

Personally...I think it's a few things. The Carolina game where the O-line protected him decently, he played pretty will IMO. He had the one pick, but also got hammered as he released the ball.

I'm wondering if he's not just simply trying to do too much and overthinking it. This is a kid who has never been a backup and is desperately trying to beat out Pennington.

I think he is trying to hard to make things happen which to me is evident is some of his forced throws.

Yep, you're right. It's Penny's fault that Henne looks like sh*t. He gets blamed for everything else that our offense can't do, might as well blame the backup QB's poor performance on him too.

Holy god man....you're a little defensive. It was a simple question!

As many years we have been rebuilding the O-line...waiting for receivers to bloom...I'm frankly amazed that Penny is as good as he is...now you want Henne who hasn't had that much play time to be as good? Me thinks fans here complain too much at times.

A QB is only as good as his team will let him be.

It just seems like such a ridiculous question. Pennington has taken several shots downfield this preseason, and he took several last season as well. I just don't see how you can blame Henne's shortcomings on Penny.

I don't think you quite understood what I was trying to ask.

Certain QBs like to make different throws right? Where Pennington might like to make short throws, Henne might be accustomed to throwing different types of patterns.

Pennington is the clear cut starter, therefore the coaches make plays for his style. When Henne comes in, he has to play with pennington's playbook and I was asking if this might be hindering him.

I am NOT blaming Pennington. I was merely asking if this is something that might be hurting Henne's progression. Do you think the offensive coordinator made one playbook for Pennington and a different one for Henne?

Do you really think playbooks for different QBs are that vastly different? I don't think they remove the deep outs or skinny posts from the passing plays just because Penny's running them. Plus, if he can't make the throws Penny can then he's got no nope on the long throws. He needs to be accurate first, a cannon second. That's not a stylistic preference, it's a fact.
