Our bright spot last season was our Defense, it kept us in many games that we had no business still having a chance in, Jason Taylor had his best year as professional culminating in a Defensive Player of the Year Award a first for a Dolphin defensive player.

We have added Joey Porter, and replaced Dan Wilkinson with some good looking rookies or 2nd year rookie, we also have Travis Daniels healthy again, and Channing Crowder showed signs of moving to the upper tier of LB's last year. And Yeremiah Bell was playing at a very high level at the end of last season, he finished the year healthy, and is moving into being eligible of free agency
this year, that should motivate him to continue the high level of play.

And strangely for us, Wayne paid big money to keep the our excellent Defensive Co-ordinator Dom Capers, so we have a good Maestro leading the players this year.

Our downside wasn't addressed in either free agency or the draft, we have a suspect corners, Will Allen was "okay" nothing flashy, and Jason Allen has been switched to corner as he had a hard time last year at safety.

So with adding Porter and the Rookies and Roth getting more playing time, and Rod Wright being healthy have we gotten better or stayed the same or maybe we fall back a small amount?

I think our D will be great again this year, we have reloaded with better players and young upgrades over our older players, Yeremiah Bell starting full time can only help us, but total yds and points allowed and three and outs, we may not be as good with New England basically cornering the market on veteran WR talent.

IMO, I think the front seven might even be better than last year, but if we can't cover better in the secondary then it will be bombs away on us all season. Here's hoping the light comes on for Jason Allen at CB.

I was kinda pissed that we didn't address the secondary but I do like Bell, Daniels and the Allens back there. If these guys pan out and the front 7 plays like it can then we should have a top 3 defense.

I like the enthusiasm. I believe our D will be better this year. More front 7 pressure = more picks. I agree with basically everything in your post. One thing though, JT is actually the 3rd Phin to win the award:

1973 - Dick Anderson, S Miami
1983 - Doug Betters, DE Miami

Figures...LOL that was the year Betters had 16 sacks or more as I recall, I didn't realize that he had won the award though.

I think if we only have a caretaker QB we can do much better then 6-10 even if JT doesn't have another awesome season.

As I recall Olindo Mare had a really bad year last year and that cost us two games and we have upgraded that position as well.

Absolutely.
I don't think many fans realize how good our Special Teams will be this season. For years we always had top coverage units, but the return game was pedestrian. Now, between Ginn and L. Booker... nothing but short fields.

Special Teams is a subtle art, and we still don't know how good Jamie Fields is or is not, he certainly reminds me of Reggie Roby physically.

Welker I think averaged around ten yards per return, with no return for a TD, a Ginn or Booker should be able to do better than that, with a good chance of breaking a punt or kick off for a TD.

And our younger defensive lineman should spend less time on the Injured Reserve along with maybe being more athleticly capable for things like zone blitz's.

Capers Defense demands a Safety that can diagnose a play like a QB, that is why Yeremiah Bell's improved play is such a key for us to win this year.

Just our D alone will keep us in games, and maybe score some points for us.

We want know until the season starts..about any of our team. Right now, we're going on last year's ending..I hope their better than they were last year personally.

The front 7 is a force to be reckoned with. But without pure cover corners or corners who can make big plays, this defense will have a hard time reaching it's maximum potential.

More front 7 pressure = more picks.

Not if guys like Will Allen continue to have hands of stone. His sole interception wasn't even a real one. He just yanked the ball out of a WR's hands. If it were Pat Surtain or Sam Madison for instance, they would've racked up double digit Ints each the way our front 7 play. Jason Allen and Daniels are relatively unproven in terms of getting picks in the pros.

What if Roth or Taylor goes down who is going to step up? So this area is suspect until some rookies get hot. Same thing with our Safty position top backup is Tillman and we know what happend last year. We have a number of CBs, DTs and LB to choose from and rotate so we should be strong there. The new punter has to do his job to as the yards he gives up affect the defense so count that into the equation.
