Just curious, has the Dolphins staff actually spoken about potentially moving TJ to LB, or is this all just fans guessing? For some reason, I don't recall reading about it anywhere outside of what fans and the media say "should" or "could" happen.

I think this will have a big effect on who we draft this year, so I would like to know if this move is actually in their plans. Does anyone know where the rumors came from?

Haven't heard anything official. Personally I think it would be a great move and give us more options in the draft #finsup

Just fans making stuff up. I don't think moving him to LB is a good idea. Some people have suggested that he could be a hybrid LB/S and that could work in some package but I'm not a fan of playing him at LB because there's no way he'd hold up against the run.

That kind of move might solve one problem while creating another one.

It could but that will depend on the direction we go in the draft, as well as how lippit comes back from his injury. He definitely could be a wildcard in certain packages as well. I don't care what we do i just want us to be able too cover a damn tight end for once.

Yes Burke was quoted saying "it could be a possibility in 2018" for TJ being used in a hybrid safety linebacker role, saying that TJ definitely had the skillset for it

Ok I must have missed that. Just seems like the fans are running with this idea as set in stone. If it is not the case, then I'd rather draft another position than FS early this year. If this was definitely in the plans than I would be ok with Minkah in the first.

I'd like to draft Quin Blanding, S, UVa in the 3rd or 4th if he is there. Under the radar safety that could really blossom in our system. Honestly, I see a bit of a young Reshad Jones in him. Utilizing TJ McDonald as a hybrid SS/LB like many teams are going toward now, opens up some intriguing possibilities.

McDonald would add flexibility to the scheme that essentially allows us to flip between a base and nickel comfortably. He is very strong vs. the run as a SS, as well as being big and strong enough to develop his stacking and shedding technique. He's the guy in our defense that rings guys' bells. RB's do not want to see him across the line of scrimmage in any capacity. While I'm not sure how well he will do covering TE's, he seems to be the right skill set for it, and honestly, he can't do any worse than we've been doing the last ... 2 years uhhhh ... 5 years decade.

Personally, I'd really like to see us add a true ballhawking FS. I doubt it will happen, but if it did, the potential of keeping Jones as a SS full time, McDonald as a hybrid LB/SS, and a legit center fielder would make me feel a lot better about both our pass defense (FS as a safety net and generating turnovers) and our run defense (with two of our best run defenders closer to the line of scrimmage).

You should be ok with Minkah in the first reguardless as he is a player with real FS centerfielder skill sets. He has all of the ability of an Earl Thomas, and could actually make plays on the ball downfield... something neither of our safeties do as they are both in the box type of guys. Minkah would solve a lot of problems for our D, and idc if getting him means flat out getting rid of McDonald or even Jones.

Yah I am ok with him, just in general I don't value S as high as a lot of other positions. In the same regard, unless we are drafting a 3 down LB the same thing applies.

I was more curious about TJ moving to LB, bc if that is the plan, they may not see LB as that big of a need this year (I still think it is).

Discussion in the media about TJ Mc becoming a flex player between Safety and Linebacker has definitely surfaced this year. I see above that Matt Burke mentioned it. A year ago they were super impressed by TJ to sign him to a longer term contract, but there was no discussion at the time about him being a flex player. Sometimes where there is smoke, there is fire. I expect that this will be an experiment that they look at preseason.

well Jones just got restructured so he's not going anywhere.

What about that kid out of Arizona, Dane Cruikshank? His playing style is supposedly on the same level as Minkah.

Not even close. Just because sbnation does a fluff piece on the guy doesn't mean he's on Minkah's level. Not even close. Plus if we go d backs I want a true FS not another corner.

For the second half of this season, safety T.J. McDonald — ramping up from a half-season suspension — was most often asked to play centerfield, while Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones played closer to the line of scrimmage. Using McDonald more often in a hybrid safety-linebacker role in 2018 could be considered.

“It could be,” Burke said. “(McDonald) has obviously got a skillset that fits like that type of role. Obviously, he’s a bigger safety. Again, the issue you get into is if you have small safeties and you put them down and maybe they’re too small in the run game or if you have linebackers that can’t run with tight ends, that’s just sort of the contrast. He definitely has a skillset that we feel like we can utilize.”
