Reaction among Dolfans to the arrest of defensive end Randy Starks last weekend ranged from one extreme to the other.
Some wanted to the Dolphins to release him. Some blamed the Miami Beach Police for creating the situation.

There were calls to re-sign Vonnie Holliday, who was cut in March to save money.

Many just hoped it wasn’t true, given Starks made a solid contribution (29 tackles, three sacks) in his first season with the Dolphins in 2008.

In the past 24 hours, new information has come to light, courtesy of Ed O’Donnell, Starks’ attorney.

O’Donnell spoke first to The Herald’s Barry Jackson, but checked in with me Thursday to offer his perspective on Starks’ arrest.
Bottom line, O’Donnell said Starks should have received nothing more than a traffic citation for having too many people in his Freightliner Truck (capacity: four).

In my experience - never been arrested or close, but via observations - police tend to overreact to defiance. If I had to guess, Starks was partying way too hard and driving recklessly, and when the officer approached Starks, he was probably a defiant jerk. I doubt he really tried to injure the cop - or even came close to doing so. To my knowledge, the cop wasn't hurt.

From what I've heard of Starks, he's an a-hole. As long as his legal troubles don't hurt the team and he can contribute, my opinion on him remains the same.

One other thing is I keep seeing the assumption about him partying hard and whatnot and it seems to imply intoxication but nothing indicates that drugs or alcohol were involved whatsoever.

There were 9 people in a truck that could comfortably seat 6 or 7. I think the initial report that there were 13 people in the truck gave the impression of a much more "partying it up" image than might have really been the case. The indications are that Starks and 4 other friends including William Kershaw were at a bar and they picked up 4 other women and they all decided to pile into Starks' big @ss truck.

From there, who knows what happened. It's a he-said, she-said thing. What I do know is that if the police officer got the number of people in the truck wrong, it casts doubt on the rest of the facts surrounding the case as written in his police report. I also know it would be extremely hard to prove what Randy was charged with, especially since the police report contained no claim that the officer successfully got the attention of anyone in the truck.

My opinion has changed. Regardless if he was right or wrong or the police officer is right or wrong.

He needs to keep himself in a position where there is no room for doubt. He has a larger responsibilty to his team than his friends.......in some cases even his family.

I work in an industry where I need to be very concerned about not only the company I keep but to the actions I take. I don't make his kind of money but I do make enough to realize that if I don't make proper desicions all I've worked for could be lost.

Has my opinion of him changed? Not really. I never really had an opinion of him to begin with. I'll tell you what changed it more than anything....The domestic abuse issue that surfaced. That will change my opinion of you most times. I dunno....I've been married close to 13 years and I managed not to hit my wife.......I just sort of expect everyone can accomplish that.

In the Army we would call this "The appearance of impropriety". As NCOs we were expected to avoid things that while maybe not illegal, were detrimental to the image of the Army and the NCO corps.

Randy Starks always had a spotty history. He tested positive for marijuana back in college I believe. It was one of the reasons he fell down the draft a bit.

Nope the same, I think he does a decent job at getting to the QB when he is in, but somehow the qb usually escapes.

Having a past is one thing.........ruining your future is a completely different situation.

If you're selfish enough to dissappoint your team mates at least be selfish enough to protect yourself and your future.

He's in a position where he could be retired by 30 with all the money he'll ever need and he puts himself in a situation where that past comes back and bites you in the butt!

Believe me, if I have the will power to do it so I can retire at 55. Anyone can do it for 6 to 8 years!

Being too harsh on the guy. Innocent until proven guilty. All he's guilty of at the moment is having 2 or 3 more people in his truck than he should have. Heck I did that just on my way back from the beach the other week, in my Honda Accord. I don't expect anyone to make a federal case about it or call me an idiot or say I am seriously jeopardizing my future.

This applies to legal, not factual guilt. It is a legal principal, not a personal ethical principal imperative.

That may be, but nothing has been proven enough even to that standard. The facts of the case are in serious dispute.

You're not though and he could be!

He has a history. He's in a situation, like it or not that kids look up to him and he's a leader. There's a public image that he needs to uphold.

There's a totally different stigma attached to professional athletes.

I'm not saying at all that he should be kicked off the team or the league. The question was does my opinion of him change and my answer is yes. He's developing a pattern of stupidity.

He has the world at his finger tips and stupidity could rip it away. I like him as a player. He needs to like himself as a player also.
