Can anyone name an example when the Dolphins traded picks to move up in the draft for a player and it actually panned out? I can think of 3 times where it was a failure:

1.) Vernon Carey: Traded up ONE SPACE with Minnesota. I forget what they gave them in return, but was moving up one spot worth it for Carey? He was a decent starter, but the Dolphins got played by NE who feigned interest in Carey. Once the Dolphins made the move up, NE drafted Vince ****ING Wilfork!

2.) Dion Jordan: Dolphins gave up the #12 and #42 pick to move up to #3 to draft the epic bust known as Dion Jordan

3.) Leonte Carroo: The Miami Dolphins traded up to the 86th pick in the 3rd round to select Leonte Carroo, giving up our 6th round pick in 2016 as well as our 3rd and 4th round selections in 2017 to the Vikings. Carroo has barely played any snaps in the 2 and the half years he has been with the Dolphins. Meanwhile the Vikings drafted a starting Center (Pat Elflein) with the 3rd round pick in 2017

Can anyone name any examples when moving up actually WORKED?

IMO, the strategy should be to accumulate as many picks as possible and take your shots, not trade multiple picks to move up and snag a guy who may not pan out. It's a numbers game. The more lottery tickets, the better chances you have to win!

What are the odds of. ANY NFL team having a successul trade up?

Not sure if this one applies but I think it does in a way. JJ traded our 2nd round pick the next year to draft Pat Surtain in the 2nd round. He was worth that 1st round pick but trading up the way the OP is asking, NO

Ozzy rules!!

Saving spot for the discussing next year in this thread. We will surely be moving up in next year's draft..... Just to "make a splash" -- book it.

Hopefully it's for a qb or a lockdown corner or rangy FS..

I'd be happy with that, a elite qb makes the entire team better..Hell look what Moore does to the team compared to Cutler.

I like Tannehill but I am pro QB in this draft. I really like Rosen.

If not, I'd make a play for Derwin James or Fitzpatrick.

The only time a trade up ever makes sense is trading up for an elite QB prospect, but even then it can be problematic. See RGIII

hmmm this actually is weird I remember us trading DOWN to get Landry also

if i remember correctly we traded down for Ajayi also.

Trading away a pick that could have been used to draft Elfein hurts, especially when Carroo so far has done almost nothing. Trading away 3rd, 4th and 6th rd picks for a luxury WR was just a pretty crappy move, especially for a team who needs every pick it can get its hands on to improve the overall talent level.

It looks like they traded down with the 49ers in Round 2. 49ers took Carlos Hyde, Miami took Landry

San Francisco 49ers acquired No. 57 from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a second-rounder (63) and a fifth-rounder (171). The 49ers took Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde. At No. 63, the Dolphins took LSU WR Jarvis Landry, and at 171, Montana LB Jordan Tripp.
