Explanations
* Dennis Hickey needs to look over the waiver wire for the following: a veteran TE to help with inline blocking, a swing OT, LB, DB depth and a kicker. I am not saying he is going to find anything appealing in those positions, but those areas are the biggest of need heading into the weekend.
* I put Sturgis through, but I would test him in practice Tuesday and if he is not capable, I would IR him and pick up a veteran kicker for Week One.
* Damian Williams did enough to stick, but I cannot warrant a roster spot to 6th receiver that is a vested vet.
* I am willing to trade Matthews or Gibson for another position of need...interior line, DB or TE? It would elevate Laundry and might allow them to keep Damian Williams. However, I am not jettisoning either for a late round pick.
* I kept Matt Hazel as he has physical potential off the charts and draft picks need an environment to grow.
* Hopes were high for Daniel Thomas when he was selected, but it is time to move on.
* I ended up keeping Marcus Thigpen or Orleans Darkwa. I think Thigpen can help in the short-term more. His speed can be a game changer. I like Darkwa and had him on until today. Thigpen can help on special teams not just as a return guy, but has experience on coverage units. I classified Thigpen as a RB, but he will be used most as a receiver. This is the toughest spot I fought over when trying to formulate my roster.
* I kept Dallas Thomas, however, I easily could cut him from this list and keep additional DT or WR. While I am not keen on keeping 7 WR's, I can easily line up 7 active linemen on Sunday...especially if Billy Turner thinks he can practice next week. Along those lines, I think the team is missing a Swing OT. If that player is picked up, Thomas can easily be trimmed from the roster. He did nothing to warrant a roster spots and I am surprised that people are so quick (myself included) to put him through. Do not confuse playing time with actually making the team.
* I will attempt to beat Omar Kelly for the forth consecutive year in predicting the roster.
Have fun and rip away or agree...this is always a fun weekend for us hardcore fans.
