Positives
* DeVante Parker playing.
* Miami had 462 total yards to Tampa Bay's 234.
* 184 yards rushing with a 4.7 average.
* Matt Hazel was open all night as he pushes for a roster spot. He had 96 yards on 7 catches for 13.7 average.
* Jay Ajayi was impressive all night. He gained 66 yards on 9 carries and caught 2 passes for 37 yards. He ran hard and made defenders miss.
* Mike Gillislee with 2 rushing TD's. He finished with 69 yards rushing on 17 carries. Gillislee showed nice second effort on a 4th down carry to gain a first down to keep a drive alive.
* Run defense. Tampa was held to 75 yards on 28 carries for a 2.7 average.
* Great penetration from the DT's all night.
* Anthony Johnson was active with 4 TOT with all 4 being solo. He also had a sack and 1 TFL.
* Jordan Phillips was disruptive against the run and pass.
* Chris McCain. He had his best night of the preseason. 4 TOT...all solo. He had 1 TFL coupled with 1 PD.
* Walt Aikens and Chris McCain combining for a TFL.
* Aikens was very active around the LOS.
* Jeff Luc's hit. Luc also had 6 TOT with 4 solo.
* Will Davis' 2 interceptions.
* Matt Darr. What a night for the new punter. 3 punts dropped inside the 5 yard line. He netted 44.2 yards with a long of 65 yards.
* James Davidson blocked field goal.
* Christion Jones' 104 yard return that was negated by a penalty. Jones showed explosive speed in outrunning the Bucs coverage unit.

Negatives
* Minus 3 turnover differential.
* By my count, Tampa scored 17 points off of Miami turnovers and that is not counting the safety on a bad snap.
* Ugly interceptions thrown by both McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Josh Freeman...4 total. One of MBT's went back for a pick six as the Fins were approaching the end zone. Freeman airmailed one as Miami was close to scoring the go ahead TD. They were not even close with these throws.
* Sam Brenner's high snap that ended in a safety for Tampa.
* 86 yards on 11 penalties.
* Will Davis getting beaten in between his interceptions.
* LaMike James fumbling a punt leading to Bucs TD.
* The holding penalty on Michael Liedtke that negated Jones' kick return TD.
* A bad snap that I believed was from Tim Semisch that Darr had to punt out of desperation that netted very few yards.
* The officials were amateurish tonight. Jerome Boger mixed up teams all night. They killed a successful play with a whistle that was not supposed to be blown. Just terrible job by that crew.
* Game Pass using the Tampa's broadcast team. Nothing against the crew, but I was owed my home team's crew for two of the games and did not get that.

Overall Assessment
* We cannot overrate our assessments of players based on tonights game. We could be excited about what a player produced tonight, but it is the total body of work we must look at. Take Will Davis, I saw the same player from the previous few weeks. In my opinion, he is on the outside of the 53, albeit barely. However, those two interceptions should not all of sudden put him on the roster.
* Mike Glennon is not awful, but how did Miami lose to him as a rookie. Pathetic loss. I still blame Jon Martin for that loss, but that was a bad Bucs team playing that Monday Night.
* I am very interested on how the snaps are spread out among the WR's on opening day.
* Billy Turner looks like he has lost a lot of confidence. He played down to the level of competition tonight and was not very good at first take. The kid has talent and hopefully he stays positive because the team will need him sooner or later.
* Sam Brenner is going to be the back up Center, but he is physically weak and will not be capable holding up for a few weeks or more if Mike Pouncey gets injured.
* Matt Hazel needs a roster spot. With another year of development, he can help this receiving group next year.
* I am waiting to see how many DT's and the names of the players they keep. Very competitive position. Plus, Anthony Johnson left with an injury tonight. Interesting roster decisions to be made at DT.
* Not crazy how the staff handled the kicking situation the last few weeks. Andrew Franks got the lion's share of the kicks and kickoffs the last two weeks. Sturgis has barely been seen. Now, I suppose Franks could be the guy. However, is the team really going to roll with a rookie from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this season? However, with that said, what has Caleb Sturgis done to "win" the kicking job? Sturgis does not have the body of work to put on a ball cap and be entitled to a roster spot. I wanted to see Sturgis make some kicks. I am not sold on Strugis at all...never have been. Perhaps this team looks outside the organization. In the end, I think they give the job to Sturgis, but I feel he is far too inconsistent and did nothing to win the job verses Franks.
* Very interested on how Mike Tannenbaum sets his 53 (or 51 or 52 as he mentioned during the broadcast) this weekend. He even discussed the idea of trades. It is good to know that he understands that more improvements might be needed.
* Areas I would like to see the team look at this weekend on the waiver wire or free agency is OL depth, kicker, CB and Safety. Outside of OL depth, I am not demanding a move, but I would like to see if some talent at those other positions fall through the cracks.
* Props to all of you that stayed with preseason game #4 all the way through. Game ball for you all.
* The health situation going into Week 1 is pretty solid considering. The staff did a great job holding players back at times as well. Others rehabbed successfully and patiently to get back to a point where they could help very early this season....if not Week 1.
* I am very excited for the season ahead. There are a lot of areas to be positive about for this team. They have great direction from the front office and have as much talent as they have had in years. The coaching staff needs to come up big and if they do, Miami could very well be playing playoff football this January.

Thanks Hayden. Did Davis and Gillislee do enough to make the 53 ?
Do we trust LaMike with the kick return chores or do they go back to Landry when the games count ?
Interested in your opinion.

Agree 100 % :up:

Good job as always hayden, I was at the Lions?Bills game. Great post, team is loaded with talent it looks like. Go phins!

Literally the only bad thing that happened this entire offseason was the Delmas casualty. I've thoroughly enjoyed this offseason and preseason, yes, even including that abortion of a game tonight.

Even Parker's setback was for the better in the long-run and now he looks close to 100%. We are going into battle week 1 at full strength (sans Delmas) and I am friggin amped. Really amped. Most I've been in a while.

It's been fun discussing and even debating stuff with all of you, but buckle up. Next ones for real and it's gonna be a fun ass ride.

Solid preseason. This team seems poised. :woot:

Hopefully the team can find some O Line depth on the waiver wire because I don't trust too many of these backup guys.

Regarding the kicking situation, I have a handy acronym: ABS. It stands for Anybody But Sturgis.

Watching the Minnesota game right now and hoping for a comeback... Great review as always. Forgot to mention CHristion jones kick return

Thanks for the write up like always, I only got to see a little bit of the action.

In my opinion giving the kicking job to Sturgis is just a sham. Even as an unknown I have way more faith in Franks than Sturgis

Agree, Agree and Agree. Excellent write up.

Now.... I'm gonna get some flack for this....BUT.... The other thing that worries me for the upcoming year is Philbin. I KNOW IT'S ONLY PRESEASON..... BUT.... I don't like how this team in general has played sloppy. Also, the penalties are WAY up this preseason. Hopefully, I'm being over critical and we will be much more disciplined a week from Sunday.

Dennis Hickey has put together a great influx of real talent his first two years in miami.

I have all the confidence in the world he will make the correct decisions for the 53.

This is going to be an exciting team this year for sure. I think we are another off season from play offs as we dont have lb's who can cover and outside of grandpa grimes, our cb's dont inspire at all. Last year we couldnt stop the run, this year it appears the pass may be the bug-a-boo in our season.

But, this is why the games are played. Would love to see Suh mash Brady flatter than the pats footballs.

Why worry? We were one of the least penalized team's in the nfl last year under philbin.

The key word is "pre" season.

Very good summary, as always. I'll throw in some observations in this thread because I respect it so much.

First year in recent memory that we'll be forced to cut some good players. Normally the cut down to 53 is basically the same as the drop to 75. That's a step forward but we still lack the truly great players. I'd prefer weakness at the end of the roster if it meant we had 4-5 true stars.

Lack of great players is the concern. Until that changes I can't get too excited about anything. Overall the roster is deeper with fewer holes. But there's nothing more fragile or irrelevant than parity. That's all we've managed, to get the lower levels of our roster closer in caliber to the top teams. Until our top guys match the stars on the elite teams there's simply not much there. Nobody cares about depth or mediocrity.

Tannehill in many ways is more dangerous to this franchise than Henne ever was. With Henne the flaws were obvious, and no chance of reversal. Everyone pushed the give up button. Tannehill teases just enough to encourage the happy adjustment crew. If you've got happy adjusters atop the franchise, which is not uncommon, they'll be content to pretend next season will be the magical 1.5 multiplier, or the following year...

Our defense is like a golfer with a great scoring average, excellent overall stats, and plenty of praise, but who simply can't get through 72 holes on top when it matters. Reminds me of a a great story back in my Vegas days. After my partner funneled 4 Miller lite's, put his nose on the club and spun around ten times, I knew he wouldn't hit the green on an elementary par 3. That's what I love about the happy adjusters. They have no comprehension about the burden or normalcy of anything.

Sturgis is the most underrated player on the team. I'll let everyone else decide if a kicker qualifies for the MVP category. One of only a few on the team who have a chance to be among the best at their position. You've got to be a 40 percenter to believe there's any valid reason to get rid of Sturgis. Don't be a short term dunce.

I've seen 10-6, 11-5 predictions. Absolutely laughable. Naturally there will be happy adjusters and wishful thinking. Bar stoolers are akin to drinking the kool aid while the superior Vegas potatoes swill top shelf in the lounge. As I've posted, in Las Vegas circles they would be laughed out off the room for sheer ignorance but yet somehow it's accepted if not applauded here. Pumpkin pie at the Bellagio is the choice of champions. Meanwhile, our new logo is like cherry pie. It's pie, but it's cherry; cherry is trendy. It's the type of thing I've tried to emphasize around here, that trends seldom continue unabated in the same direction.

I'm in the same boat as last season, debating between 8-8 and 9-7. I chose 8-8 in a similar poll last year and will do so again. As always, I don't want subjectivity to get in the way of logic. There are more paths to 8-8 than 9-7. Give me the cheap path toward correct. It's one of the great litmus tests toward football knowledge.

Meanwhile, we celebrate patching a 28 year old stadium. That's not a breakthrough. It's a certification that we have no clue what we are doing. The people atop the franchise hire mediocre people who make mediocre decisions. Those decisions may not stand out immediately as mediocre. Sometimes it takes a year or two. I'll pay attention when someone near the top the franchise speaks out against the stadium.

Vegas potato is done addressing his peasants. Carry on my happy little bar stoolers.
