Overall Assessment
- Plus 4 Turnover Differential.
- Got 10 points off of turnovers.
- Won the field position battle all game.
- 2-2 on 4th down conversions.
- Got running attempts. The team ran the ball more than they threw it.
- Brock Osweiler did not turn the ball over. In a game so close, not making a mistake ended up being huge in terms of coming up with a win.
- Kenny Stills stepping up and playing despite being ruled out by many in the media.
- 2-13 on 3rd down defensively.
- Red Zone Defense: the Jets did not even enter the red area all game.
- Run defense: 80 yards on 21 carries for an average of 3.8 yards.
- Only gave up 4.4 yards per play on defense.
- The defense earned 4 interceptions.
- The defense forced a punt from the Jets out of the half. Something that has been a major weak spot the past few games.
- Jerome Baker’s interception and return for a TD.
- Cameron Wake had two sacks and provided outstanding pressure.
- Akeem Spence had his best game as a Dolphin. He had two sacks and was active all day.
- T.J. McDonald had 9 TOT, 8 Solo, TFL, 2 PD and a big interception. McDonald thrived today.
- Kiko Alonso interception
- Walt Aikens with a game sealing interception.
- Xavien Howard was outstanding in coverage. He had sticky coverage on his assignment.
- Minkah Fitzpatrick held up on the boundary when asked.
- Bobby McCain made an important tackle on 3rd down that if he missed his assignment would have got a 1st down.
- Matt Haack’s punting was huge today. 9 punts for 402 total yards, a 44.7 average and 7 punts inside the 20 with a long of 58.
- Aikens and Brandon Bolden were outstanding on punt coverage. Great hustle and pursuit angle.
- Jason Sanders made his kicks. He had a long of 43 and made his kicks. Also, his kickoffs prevented the Jets from making any plays.
- Playing McCain at Nickel.
- I like the draw play that set up the first 3 points of the game. The crowd booed, but points were needed. It was a smart call and helped the team win in the end.
- Props to Matt Burke for getting his charges ready and calling a tremendous game.
Negatives
- 3-16 on 3rd down was the offense.
- The offense was 0-1 in the red area. Only one Red Zone trip is bad in itself.
- 2.4 yards per rush/64 yards on 27 carries.
- On a promising opening drive, Kenyan Drake blew a blitz pickup and yielded a sack of Osweiler.
- Osweiler missing a wide open Danny Amendola that might have gone for six.
- Amendola holding penalty that got the team behind the sticks.
- Ted Larsen holding on a Wildcat play in which Kalen Ballage had a nice run.
- Osweiler stepped up in the pocket and threw behind Parker to which the ball was dropped. While the ball placement was not great, Parker should have caught the ball without extraordinary effort.
- Zach Sterup struggled bad at RT. He gave up at least two sacks. One in particular was awful on a 3rd and 1.
- Gave up 4 sacks.
- The offense had a quick 3 and out after the Jets kicked their second FG in the 4th quarter.
- 2 minute defense to finish the half. Miami gave up 3 points.
- Andre Branch facemask penalty.
- Raekwon McMillan facemask penalty.
- Dropped interception by Howard.
- Dropped interception by Torry McTyer.
- 4th quarter screen by the Jets on a 3rd and forever that set up a FG. The Jets ended up making a 56 yarder.
- Not crazy about the decision to defer the coin toss.
- Drake getting 3 carries.
Overall Assessment
- Shame on the media for making a big deal about the field conditions. Yes, the Canes game was a gullywasher, but the field was never going to be an issue. Tom Garfinkel and the team has done their homework and they know what the field can and cannot take. You know that Jets executives got in the ear of all the talking heads on the pregame shows complaining. Complaining about a field that they watched on ESPN2 and never set foot on. You know their complaint was from last year’s field that did not play well and was game the Jets choked away. Shame on the media and they owe the team and especially grounds crew an apology.
- The Reshad Jones story is odd at this point. It seems to me he was taken out of the game and he did not like that. From there, he pulled himself out from the game. Here is my stance...Jones has been a warrior for this team. He has made key plays. He has played hurt. In other words, he has not been like the other knuckleheads that Adam Gase has jettisoned. That said, if Jones has been and was freelancing, that cannot happen. If he refused to play within the scheme of the defense...that is not acceptable. With all that being said, Gase need to handle this in house and bring Jones off the ledge. From there, the leaders on this team- from the coaches to players- need to get through to him that the team is better if plays his assignment. If he does, all is good. If he does not, he can grab seat on the bench or the inactive list. At the same time, the team should not release him like they have other players.
- The team did what they had to today. Yeah, the offense was not moving the ball. However, today called for the offense not making mistakes and leaning on the defense and special teams. Yes, areas need to get better. However, between the takeaways, winning the field position and winning on 3rd down, Miami did some good things today in a win.
- I am happy for Cam Wake. He was quiet this year. However, he destroyed the Jets today. It was great to see.
- It was obvious that the defense needed to score and Baker delivered at the right time.
- Adam Gase is now 5-1 versus Todd Bowles.
- Cannot catch a break with the injuries. Also, it seems on game day the appropriate backup is inactive. This team has had to navigate a slew of injuries.
- The team saved the season with the win. 5-4 with a ton of injuries and tough opponents played. Yes, they need to get better in all areas. Yes, they need to get healthier. Yes, they need to start to get healthy. However, in my estimation prior to the season starting, I had them 6-3 at this point. Considering the tough schedule and injuries, Miami is probably where they should be.
