Positives
* Won the turnover differential 3-1
* Time of possession: Dolphins: 38:52 to 21:08
* The team won the field position battle.
* Total yards: Miami: 453. New York Jets: 177
* The offense converted 7 of 16 on 3rd down.
* Ryan Tannehill. He battled through some tough moments in which he missed a few receivers deep to put in an awesome performance against a good defense in their building. He went 28-43, 331 yards, 2 TD's and a pick. He showed some nice touch on throws. A ball to Charles Clay on a 3rd and very long, down the middle was made with featherlike touch. RT also picked up yards at times with his legs. RT had some of his best pocket presence we have seen this year. He astutely shifted in the pocket to allow for passing plays to develop. Other times, he got the ball out quickly, neutralizing the rush. Tannehill played one of his best games to date.
* The receivers had great days. Brian Hartline had 127 yards, 9 catches and a TD. Mike Wallace was effective again with 82 yards, 7 catches and a TD. Charles Clay was a matchup nightmare for the Jets has he caught a career high 7 balls for 90 yards.
* It was terrific to see YAC from the receivers. It makes offense so much easier to come by when receivers get the crucial yards after the catch.
* The pass protection was outstanding. We heard all week how RT was going to be broken by this front seven. It did not happen as they gave up one sack. Because of RT's pocket performance and the guys up front, the passing game was able to thrive. Outstanding game by the line.
* What a day for the run game. While I will take static for my prediction at half time and I understand the heat....I did say this earlier today (sometimes my gut feelings are right)

The run game came to the party and had a great game versus the best run defense in the NFL. They churned out 125 yards of 3.5 a career. Lamar Miller took on the extra load and was terrific. He got 72 yards on 22 carries. All were hard earned yards. Mike Gillislee was good today in limited action. He was decisive and moved the pile some. He seemed to have fresh legs. Great job by the line and backs today.
* It was great to have Mike Pouncey back. It was the right move to hold him out for this week in a division/conference game as opposed to playing him...perhaps unready last week versus a NFC opponent.
* The pass rush was unrelenting. They got 4 sacks and came up with many pressures and hits on the QB.
* The pass defense was tight. They were not really challenged, but they were ready when passes came their way.
* A big spot in the game was when the Jets finally challenged in the 3rd quarter. They were first in goal and Simms rolled right, He looked for the TE, but Reshard Jones batted the pass away. The Jets tried a run a play later and were stopped short. They were forced to kick a field goal and did not threaten again. Nice defense in tight overall.
* 3rd down defense. The Jets were 2-12.
* Olivier Vernon. What a day. 2.5 sacks. 10 TOT, 7 solo, 3 QB hits, 3 TFL. Great performance. Two games in a row at the Met Life in which O.V. made a huge impact against the Jets.
* Phillip Wheeler is doing some good work lately. Today he was active with 8 TOT, 4 solo, 1/2 sack and 1 fumble recovery.
* Dannell Ellerbe interception before the half.
* I liked how the defense played hard through the end of the game. They did not give up garbage yards or points. They bucked up until the last Jets possession.
* The team "finished" the half well. After last week's mess, they got a turnover and with no timeouts got into field goal range. Sturgis cashed in his FG to attempt to make the score 6-0 going into the half.
* Another "team" high point was them scoring a TD after the of the Wheeler fumble recovery.
* After the Jets got their FG, Marcus Thigpen had a great return that ended up leading to the offense getting a TD. The team snapped momentum back and did not give it back.
* Good to see the team close out an opponent. Too many times this year, the Dolphins have let teams back in it and sometimes have lost those games. Not today. Great to see.
Negatives
* Short yardage situations were awful. The offense is lousy at picking up a yard or less. They were stuffed all today. They tried to throw for it and it failed.
* Red Zone play calling. Mike Sherman was fine today until he hit about the Jets 30. There were times he got way too conservative such as prior to the miss by Sturgis. There were times the situation called for them to hammer up in there and Sherman called for low percentage passes.
* Sherman's play calls on 4th down were especially odd. At the Jets 40, they ran a play to Hartline down the sideline...very low percentage. Then again, on the goal line of the Jets, he called for a fade to Charles Clay in the corner that had no chance.
* I did not like Joe Philbin going for it on 4th down in the 1st quarter on his own 40. The game called for winning field position. The team gave up valuable yards in the attempt to move the chains.
* I DID like that he went for it on goal line, but as I said above, I hated the fade call to Clay.
* I was surprised that Philbin did not challenge a possible TD by Gillislee. It might have been worth a shot. It did not look like his knee was down. With the team as lousy as they are in short yardage situations, it was worth a shot.
* While I am killing the play calling, at some point the players' execution has to improve and score TD's.
* Tannehill still missed on some deep shots. His overall accuracy on the long throw is still missing and needs to improve.
* Charles Clay's PI on Miller's screen that ended up in the end zone. I question if it was the correct call because he might have been behind the LOS, but still the penalty took a TD off of the board.
* Sturgis missed again. He is becoming a scary proposition after a hot start.
* RT's interception. He was pressured and fluttered a duck in the air. All the Dolphins receivers looked at the ball and made no attempt to knock it down. Mike Wallace, especially, made no effort in stopping Antonio Cromartie from catching the ball.
* Will Davis looked awful in coverage. He bit on a double move and his receiver was left wide open as the Jets converted a 3rd and 10.
* Chris Clemons dropped an interception around his own goal line. Dropping interceptions are almost like a turnover for the team. They have to make these plays.
* Still no TD's in the 4th quarter. The streak of games is becoming too long for this team. While it did not matter today, it will in the coming weeks.
* Two penalties on a kick and punt return.
Overall Assessment
* Great to see the team close out the Jets. They have been allowing teams to come back on them. While they did not take advantage of some opportunities early on, they found a way to close out the Jets.
* Props to Joe Philbin for having his team focused through this mess created by Jonathan Martin. I am very critical of Philibin's strategy and how well he is developing players. However, my hat is off to him how he has kept the team together during this time.
* It is not a surprise to me that the day after they NFI'ed Jon Martin, they played their best game. I mentioned that last night in another thread. You wonder if it should have been done awhile ago.
* Bryant McKinnie is lightyears better than Jon Martin. It was a major upgrade to the position.
* Caleb Sturgis is very sketchy. I like veterans in the kicking role. What ever your stance, Sturgis is inconsistent right now. He will be playing in wintery venues in the coming weeks. He needs to come up big.
* This is a bad short yardage team. I called for the team to look for a lead FB like Vonta Leach in the offseason. The team did not sign him and they still have no FB on the roster. The team's weakness in this area is alarming and could haunt later in the year.
* The team needs to be more opportunistic. They are still leaving plays on the field. They must tighten that up in the coming weeks if they plan on playing with the remaining foes on the schedule.
* The team stayed alive. They still have a chance. Next week in Pittsburgh is a big game. The Fins are on the road against a seasoned QB. However, the Dolphins match up well. It is another big game.
