Hayden Fox's Preseason Week Two Assessment

Other thing I noticed about this game and Wallace is they were having him run around the QB from wideout as misdirection. They did this with another WR as well. Seeing big trickery coming when games count.

Nah he was back in after the injury.

* First year in recent memory that we'll be forced to cut some good players. Normally the cut down to 53 is basically the same as the drop to 75. That's a step forward but we still lack the truly great players. I'd prefer weakness at the end of the roster if it meant we had 4-5 true stars. IMO, even somebody like Grimes is overstated. That hustle play against the rookie Evans camouflaged that Grimes wasn't exactly having a stalwart game.

* Not really a shock that Evans fumbled. There's always been a lack of attention to detail with him. He prefers to win jump balls based on height and athletic ability alone. Let Manziel run down that sideline and no chance he doesn't find the end zone.

* The Dolphins again have good fortune when the opponent is seemingly home free down the left sideline

* I didn't think Tannehill was particularly sharp. He had the one obviously fortunate deflection that looked destined to be batted down if not intercepted. I thought I saw another deflection not far off his hand that also ended up as a completion. On the roll right he again wandered rather aimlessly. Those plays need to be designed to roll left, even if it goes against Lazor's tendency or logic.

* IMO we took it easy on the play action after perhaps showing too much last week. For most of the first half the offense looked very similar to last season other than a handful of plays. The quick play fake then dart to Landry is something I expect to see a half dozen or more types per game. Not the identical play but that type of aggressive look. Force the opponent to stop it instead of assuming they will adjust.

* Last year I noted that Kelly's offense didn't feature as many options per play as in college, which is sensible since the decisions have to come quicker. But he increased play action near the line of scrimmage and quick darts off short drops. At Oregon the drops are generally deep.

* Odrick had several strangely pathetic snaps early in the game. Very low energy level

* Griese uses the Larry Ball question every time the Dolphins play Tampa Bay during preseason

* Hickey didn't say anything particularly interesting but at least he had energy and respected the questioning, unlike Ireland's typical approach to that type of thing

* Even though we won this game handily I felt better after the Falcon game.

Awsi - It's off the topic but many people don't seem to understand how important Mike Evans was in helping to make Johnny Manziel look good. Without a weapon like Evans to get him out of trouble, he could just look like an undersized, scrambling QB with a massive ego. People also forget that Tebow had Aaron Hernandez and Riley Cooper catching his average throws at his college open day to impress the scouts. Some big guys with good hands help to make the QB look good.

Evans helped Manziel, but Manziel helped Evans just as much, and I would argue more. Take away Evans, and Manziel still has close to 4,000 total yards and 34 TD's. If Wallace's contract weren't such an issue, he'd be perfect in Cleveland, because Manziel has some of the best touch on the deep ball of any QB to come out in recent memory. Injuries might prevent Manziel from achieving greatness, but I don't see anything else - not even that terrible Browns organization - standing in his way.

A very big positive for me during the game came on the Tannehill led field goal drive that started with Miami backed up inside the 10 yard line. Midway through the drive The Dolphins are penalized 10 yards and force into a first and 20. In recent years that almost assures the drive is dead. Even after Wallace missed the hitched pass on first down the Dolphins managed to still convert the series for a first down. While the drive did eventually stall and result in a field goal, that conversion is a very good omen to me.

The fact that we were able to move the ball with some consistency was good. Last season our offense was feast or famine. 3 and out or a score, it seemed.

I don't know. I saw some encouraging things in the game, but some causes for real concern. I'm really concerned that Joe Philbin might be just too stubborn to succeed.

* How did Miami lose to Tampa last year? What a huge loss in retrospect.

Went to that game. That was a inexcusable loss. Outcoached, and we came out Flat on MNF.

Good post...you left out a beautiful catch and run over the middle by Landry....we need to throw more balls his way.

I'm ok with Landry returning punts, but were going to get him banged up returning kickoffs.

I just sat down to finally watch the game and am just flabbergasted that no one told me that Egnew trucked some poor DB in the first pad play of the game. He put his shoulder down and plowed that guy, it as beautiful! Go Egnew!

so many people condemning wallace right now who are going to be eating crow this year.
