Positives
* Ryan Tannehill. After an odd week, Tannehill came out poised and in command throughout the game. He finished 23-31 for 278 yards. He had a very impressive 9 yards per attempt. RT had 2 TD's and 1 pick. He completed 14 in a row at point and spread the wealth around to 9 different receivers. Tannehill was effective on the ground too with 35 yards. Great day for a player that really needed something positive to come his way.
* Lamar Miller. 64 yards, 12 carries, 5.3 and 2 TD's.
* Brian Hartline stepped up with 74 yards on 6 catches. He caught a beautifully thrown deep ball early in the game to get the offense going.
* Dion Sims TD catch. Sims also blocked well most of the game.
* Mike Wallace's TD run. He bowled through Raider defenders to get in the end zone on a bubble screen. Wallace's determination cannot be discounted. The team really need a kick start and Wallace's toughness helped provide that.
* Props to Daniel Thomas. He had 35 yards on 5 carries (7.0) and a catch for 25 yards. Thomas was solid today.
* 435 total yards of offense.
* The running game churned out 157 yards on the ground (4.5 per carry).
* The offense was solid in the Red Zone (until two give away possessions late) as they were 4 of 6 converting into TD's in the red area.
* Pass pro. No sacks and gave RT a consistent pocket. Tannehill showed a strong pocket presence to help the cause.
* + 1 Turnover Differential.
* The defense held Oakland to 6 of 14 on 3rd down. Some of those conversions came on the first drive of the game and others late when the game was not in doubt.
* The rush defense bounced back by holding Oakland to 53 yards on 18 carries (2.9 per rush).
* Brent Grimes had interception and 5 TOT (5 Solo). Grimes got a pick and brought it back into the scoring area.
* Cortland Finnegan picked up a bad snap and athletically scooped the ball and ran it back 50 yards for a defensive score. Finnegan also had four tackles.
* Jimmy Wilson INT
* Walt Aikens INT
* Derrick Shelby had a game. 2 Sacks, 2 QB Hits, 3 TOT and 2 TFL. With Randy Starks down, someone on the line needed to step up and Shelby did.
* Jared Odrick had a big stop early in the game on a 3rd and 1. The Raiders had some success to that point and it helped change momentum.
* Jason Trusnik pressured Derek Carr into a grounding penalty and huge loss of yards.
* Phillip Wheeler had 5 TOT, 5 Solo. He is being used in smarter fashion and playing steady football.
* I loved how Joe Philbin immediately told his offense to stay on the field on a 4th and short. Miller scored on the play. It was a perfect call from a coach that needed to show confidence in his troops.
* The offensive design was tremendous. Bill Lazor dictated match ups. He used motion, formation variation and the read option to create explosive plays. Lazor was aggressive. He also got his QB some completions early to get his confidence up.
* I also liked how Lazor came back with two carries for Miller after Miller fumbled about an inch from scoring. Lazor made sure his RB did not lose confidence and finished strong. A great demonstration of coaching by Lazor.
* Kevin Coyle had a strong week as he changed up looks and confused the rookie QB.
* I like how Coyle mixed in Jelani Jenkins and Wheeler in the Nickel.
* The team played hard and with energy amidst a tough travel assignment/schedule. They showed some mental toughness.
* The team responded well after giving up a TD on the Raiders opening drive. The offense responded with 3 points of their own, while the defense got a stop on the Raiders' second drive to which the Miami O responded with a TD.
* Jenny Dell
Negatives
* Jarvis Landry fumbled a punt.
* Miller fumbled about an inch from the goal line.
* Sims was called for a penalty that washed a Thomas TD. He followed up the penalty by deflecting a Tannehill pass in the air that was intercepted. The throw was a bit behind the TE, but Sims needs to show softer hands.
* The Raiders converted two 3rd and longs on the opening drive.
* Surprised that Philbin did not challenge an obvious Raiders fumble. Just because he was ruled down does not mean it cannot be challenged. It was a confusing set of events. Perhaps, they said the Fins did not recover the fumble though a Dolphin came out with the ball. I would like more clarification on this particular play.
Overall Assessment
* This team needed a win. No matter how it was to look, the Dolphins needed a win. They certainly got that "W" in resounding fashion with a dominating win.
* It was good to see Ryan Tannehill having fun. He was smiling on field and joshing around on the sideline. It was good to see him enjoying the game.
* Do not confuse the result Tannehill's strong play with mind games Philbin played with him this week. Tannehill has always been motivated and is trying to learn a new offense. Nobody ever should question the preparation or effort level of the 3rd year QB. If anything, RT overcame the adversity of the week with a strong performance.
* It is time to bring Marcus Thigpen on to the active roster. Jarvis Landry should concentrate on simply being a receiver. He is working hard on returns, but he is making far too many mistakes. Put in an explosive returner like Thigpen that has some experience.
* This team needs a bye. There are plenty of players that have injuries or typical nicks and bruises. This team needs to time to heal. The coaching staff also has valuable time to self scout and figure out what they do best. The bye comes at the right time.
* With that said, some very talented players are on their way back. Mike Pouncey, Reshad Jones, Koa Misi and perhaps Knowshon Moreno are could be back for October 12th. Others like Randy Starks and Shelley Smith might have the time off to work their way back onto the field. Some talent is on the way to help.
* Everything is OK. Going into the by at 2-2 is good. I thought this team would be 2-2 come the quarter pole when looking at the schedule when it first came out. Everything the team wants to accomplish is still very much in front of them. Re-set during the bye and hit the ground running come October.
* The AFC East is wide open. The path to the playoffs will be easier through the division than as a Wild Card. Go for the division crown.
