Positives
* Won the Turnover Differential 4-0.
* 441 total yards by the offense.
* Miami delivered on offense on 3rd down by going 8-14.
* Opening drive TD that ended with a TD throw to Charles Clay. It went 10 plays, 77 yards over 5:56 seconds.
* TD on the first possession to begin the 2nd half.
* Ryan Tannehill was 24-34, 288 yards for 8.5 per attempt, 3 TD's, 0 Int and 125.6 QB Rating. Tannehill was in command all game long. RT threw strikes all over the place with outstanding accuracy. His bullet to Mike Wallace on a 3rd and long in the 1st half stands out as it went for 38 yards. He threw a beautiful ball against his body for a TD to Rishard Matthews. He had some of the best examples of pocket presence as he has shown in his young career. There were times he slid up in the pocket. Sometimes to the outside. By buying that time, Tannehill allowed his receivers to work to get open. Tannehill's ball handling was smooth. He fooled and froze Charger defenders all game. RT used his legs again by running for 47 yards on 4 carries.
* Charles Clay had a productive 65 yards on 5 catches and a TD.
* Jarvis Landry. 46 yards on 5 catches and 1 TD. Consistently, his catches picked up first downs. His TD he demonstrated great effort in trying to score. Very efficient and productive all game long.
* The pass protection was off the charts. They gave up no sacks and very little pressure.
* Miami's OT's were stellar in pass protection
* Dallas Thomas played well against Corey Liuget. He was solid in both the run game and pass pro.
* Mike Pouncey and Samson Satele were stout inside and moved well when protecting the passer. They also showed great hustle at the end of the half by getting down field on a Tannehill scramble and jumping on his subsequent fumble.
* The Miami Dolphins defense shutout the San Diego Chargers.
* The defense gave up only 178 total yards for 3.6 yards per play.
* The rush defense gave up 50 yards for only 2.6 per carry.
* Miami's D held San Diego to 3-11 on 3rd down.
* San Diego did not once get into the Red Zone.
* The defense held Phillip Rivers to 12 of 23 for 138 yards and 3 Ints for a QB Rating of 31.0.
* The pass rush got 4 sacks.
* Reshad Jones was amazing today and made plays to set the tone for his team. First, San Diego attempted to go for it on their opening drive as opposed to attempting a field goal. Jones knifed in the backfield to cut down the San Diego runner. It completely captured the momentum for Miami that they never gave back. Jones also came away with interception. Jones had 5 total tackles and 5 were solo. He also had one pass defense.
* Brent Grimes was outstanding. He had 2 interceptions. 3 total tackles with all three solo. One tackle for a loss and 2 PD's. Grimes covered like glue all game.
* Jared Odrick created pressure on Rivers to force a high throw that Jones intercepted. Odrick also recovered a fumble.
* Cam Wake exploded off of the edge for a sack. He also had 3 QB hits.
* Olivier Vernon had a sack and forced a fumble.
* Earl Mitchell got a sack and was a presence in the middle of the defense.
* Koa Misi manning up and playing.
* Courtland Finnegan had 5 total tackles, 4 Solo.
* Jimmy Wilson's return to the Nickel helped the pass defense.
* Landry's high energy returns in the kick and punt game gave life to the team.
* Won Time of Possession 36:07-23:53
* 3 penalties for a total of 15 yards.
* Fast start. Great out of the gates after halftime. Finished the off the Chargers by the end of the 3rd. Consistent and dominating football.
* I love the chippy attitude at times today. Nothing drew a penalty flag yet it made a statement to San Diego that Miami was not going to get bullied and was going to be the aggressor all day.
* A ton of credit goes to the coaching staff for stepping up in Coach Philbin's absence this week at practice while he was with his family. The leaders on the team need praise. Obviously, they made sure their teammates stayed on task and were ready for today. Credit should also go to Phlbin for having the structure in place to allow the team to productive at practice and in the meeting rooms while he was away.
* Props to Bill Lazor and Kevin for calling masterful games.
* Joe Philbin's challenge on Landry's TD.
* Jenny Dell.
* What great crowd enthusiasm all game long.
Negatives
* The offense was 3-7 in the Red Zone. I did not like some of the play calls on 1st down when it was a goal to go situation. Many netted little to no yards and put the offense off schedule. The execution was not terrific either. Clay and Wallace dropped passes that should have gone for six.
* Lamar Miller's shoulder/stinger.
* Caleb Sturgis missed a 45 yard field goal at the end of the half. The offense did great work to set up a makable attempt and Sturgis pushed it wide.
* Kick coverage was leaky.
* Directv/local channels. I pay good money to Directv to simply watch Dolphins games. The game was on a local channel where I was living and they took the viewers to a more "competitive game". Fine. However, for about five minutes the Chargers and Dolphins game was still blacked out on the bank of channels on the Sunday Ticket line up and on the Directv stream online. I missed the O.V. strip/sack and had to hear it on the radio broadcast online. I am so tired of the rules of the NFL, networks and Directv. Show me my games I paid for, please.
Overall Assessment
* Condolences to Joe Philbin and his family.
* Nice to see the team step up and get a win for Coach. At least for a little bit, Joe was able to get away and immerse himself in a game. I am sure today's result allowed his family some fun time and gave him even more to remember his father by.
* The Dolphins finally put their foot on the throat of an opponent. They kept their concentration and did not let the Chargers back in the game with turnovers and mental lapses. Perhaps, Miami is learning to win.
* Jarvis Landry and Charles Clay are adding athleticism and strength to the passing game. Both are physically strong and tough to defend. Each player has reliable hands. They are powerful runners when possessing the football. They seem to be developing a positive chemistry with Tannehill as they appear to be where the QB is expecting them to be on each play.
* Miller's injury is one to watch. I do think that Daniel Thomas and Damien Williams can handle the load for the short-term, but Miller is vital to this offense and needs to be available. Perhaps the coaching staff knew what they were doing by limiting his touches this season.
* Caleb Sturgis is sketchy. Dennis Hickey has to tryout veteran kickers this week. One could not blame Miami if they signed a veteran to take on the kicking duties for the remaining part of the schedule.
* 5-3 at the midway point.
* Miami did not get the scoreboard help from Denver today, but Miami is still only one game behind New England in the loss column. Miami just needs to stay healthy and keep this thing close with New England going into December.
