Positives

* 37 points.
* The offense went 9-13 on 3rd down.
* 5-5 in the Red Zone for the offense.
* 493 total yards on offense.
* Rush offense: The team ran for 116 yards on 28 carries for 4.1 per carry.
* The offense, with the game on the line, drove the field, down seven, amidst a ton of adversity and scored a game tying TD.
* Ryan Tannehill was the best player on the field today. His stat line was off of the charts. He finished 35-47 for 396 yards and 8.4 yards per attempt. He threw 4 TD's and 1 Interception. RT finished with 118.8 QB Rating. Tannehill threw some beautiful balls today. His TD pass to Dion Sims showed great touch. His feather touch throw to Charles Clay for 40 plus was simply tremendous. Tannehill kept leading his team back down the field for points. He also took some punishment early, but as usual, kept getting up to compete.
* Lamar Miller. He had 92 yards on 19 carries for a 4.8 average. He had a TD as well. Miller ran hard all game long. He also caught 5 balls for 58 yards.
* Mike Wallace finished a strong afternoon by going for 58 yards on 5 catches and 2 TD's. His first TD was incredible. He showed great effort on a circus catch and ripping the ball away as he dove into the end zone. Simply a great individual effort. A huge spot in the game was on the game winning drive Miami took a sack. Set back, Miami sent Wallace deep and the team drew a pass interference call. The penalty set the offense up with a new set of downs on 3.
* Charles Clay had 114 yards on 6 catches with a long of 41. Clay dominated anyone Minnesota tried to put on him.
* Damien Williams was outstanding today in his first extended opportunity. Williams had 50 yards receiving on 6 catches and a TD. A few of his catches came on the last drive and were nothing short of clutch. He also contributed 18 yards on 3 carries.
* The offensive line did a nice job today. Aided by strong play calling, the line got better as the game went on. The pressure on the QB was not as intense in the 2nd half and the team had a consistent running game.
* Hats off to Jason Fox who filled in capably at RT.
* With the game tied 35-35, Miami's defense got a three and out stop of Minnesota that led to the blocked punt.
* Cameron Wake came up big in big spots. He had 2 sacks, 2 TFL and 3 QB hits. Wake's second sack was clutch in that it pinned the Vikings back toward their end zone.
* Derrick Shelby interception. He snagged the ball alertly. The play was set up by some pressure from Olivier Vernon.
* Randy Starks had a good motor today. He had sack and appeared more active than in previous weeks. Starks' sack created a 3rd and long.
* Dion Jordan was active and had his best game of the year. Jordan had a sack and a nice open field tackle. He also contributed a nice open field tackle on kick coverage.
* Terrence Fede's blocked punt that went for a game winning safety.
* Miami won the Time of Possession: 33:06-26:46
* Bill Lazor had awesome offensive design all game. He called a great game.
* I love the effort in the 2nd half. The 1st half did not end well, yet the team played with grit and energy in the 2nd half.
* Nice comeback. Down 35 to 28, the team played some complete football late in all three phases to win the game.
* Congratulations to Manny Fernandez for making the Honor Roll.

Negatives

* Minus 1 Turnover Differential.
* Ryan Tannehill interception.
* Tannehill took a bad sack on the final drive.
* Brian Hartline's drop on the first play of the game.
* Samson Satele snapping the ball early that turned into a negative play. It pushed a field goal attempt back to 56 yards that missed short.
* Daryn Colledge's false start penalty on the final drive. It was obvious the defender got back, but Colledge tried to draw the penalty. The team lost five yards.
* Allowed 35 points.
* The defense allowed points after the team got ahead on the scoreboard on two different occasions.
* Olivier Vernon getting a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty. It made the kick off attempt closer and allowed the Vikings to have a kickoff with hang time. Jarvis Landry ended up getting the ball at the 5 yard line and fumbled setting up a Vikings TD.
* On the Vikings two point conversion attempt, both Vernon and Wake jumped offsides on separate plays.
* Rush defense gave up 119 yards on 28 carries for an average of 4.3 per rush. Too many times the Dline got pushed backwards.
* The defense allowed 7-12 on 3rd down.
* The Vikings were 3-5 in the Red Zone versus Miami's defense.
* Jamar Taylor getting burnt on the opening drive that converted a 3rd and long (the drive ended in a TD).
* On the opening drive, Jared Odrick busted into the backfield, but missed the ball carrier. The RB got back to the original line of scrimmage and on the next play, Minnesota stuck the ball in for a TD.
* Randy Starks missed a sack opportunity on Teddy Bridgewater.
* Brent Grimes was terrible today. He was smoked on two TD's. He really struggled today.
* Too many penalties. 74 yards on 8 accepted penalties.
* Joe Philbin attempting a 56 yard FG on the opening drive. It missed and gave great field position to the Vikings to start the game.
* I hated how Miami coached and players executed the end of the 1st half. First, Miami had a 3rd and 2 and called for a rollout of Tannehill. It was easily defended and the ball was thrown away. Miami punted and Minnesota seemed to be happy to run out the clock. However, Joe Philbin started to call timeouts with the idea of getting the ball back. The problem was on third down, Minnesota got a long run and started to press the ball down the field thereafter. Minnesota ended up getting a FG and almost scored a TD. Between the 3rd down play call, TO's and the shabby execution by the defense, Miami ended the half horribly.
* Sturgis squib kick that ended up at Minnesota's 40. The team covered kicks well all day and there was no need to for a squib.
* The flag on Jimmy Wilson was terrible. Wilson hit the player in the back and it was not a cheap shot because the ball was bouncing about. It was a clean hit.

Overall Assessment

* It was great to see the team play so hard today. I questioned what the attitude of the team would be and they proved to care for their teammates, coaches and job. They could have quit, but they played spirited football and found a way to win the game.
* I, like Joe Philbin, did not see the blocked punt in real time. I was writing something (for this assessment piece) and missed the play. Philbin stated he was discussing something with Bill Lazor at the time. Such a wild way to end a game.
* That review should have been a TD for Minnesota at the end of the 1st half. I cannot believe they ruled that out of bounds.
* Jason Fox is better than Dallas Thomas. Why was Fox not playing when Thomas was getting beaten routinely?
* Fox's strong play along with Damien Williams showing well brings me to a vital question…why weren't these two getting more reps earlier in the year? It was the same with Jelani Jenkins. If not for injury, Jenkins would have never seen the field. I get ripped that because "I am not a coach" or "I do not know what I am talking about because I am not there each day" when I called for Fox and to see more of Williams. Incredibly enough, when given reps, Fox and Williams proved to better than those playing ahead of them in previous weeks.
* A message was sent to Rishard Mattews by being a healthy scratch. I do not think Joe Philbin has much use for Matthews.
* With over 210 yards, Ryan Tannehill could throw for 4,000 yards. Quite a benchmark.
* Dion Sims is getting better each week.
* It is shocking how much this defense has regressed. Free agent pickups and draft picks must go to that side of the ball.
* Miko Grimes needs to "shush" this week.
* Thoughts and prayers to Chad Greenway and his family.
* I am not surprised that Joe Philbin is returning as head coach. I do not think that Philbin is an effective coach. However, I would have had a hard time firing him at 9 wins. Now, Steve Ross is electing to keep him at 8 wins. I think he should have waited to make an announcement next week. With that said, while many of us discussed other coaches, I am not surprised Ross is staying with his handpicked coach for another year.
* With that said, I think it is fair to say that Joe Philbin owes Ryan Tannehill a nice gift for the holidays. Tannehill might have saved Joe Philbin today with a spectacular day under center.
* Enjoy next week. No Dolphins games until August.
* Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Great post!

Merry Christmas to you as well!

I've said it before in other threads. This has been a problem with Philbin since he's arrived. They generally refuse to give rookies reps until the guys in front of them are injured, disregarding the play of those in front of them. It's frustrating.

Great job all year with the after game analysis Hayden

Really good to see the players did not roll over and play dead with nothing to play for. Miller and Tannehill played well all day. Great catch by Wallace who has 10 TD's so far. Where was this offense the last two weeks when we really needed it ?

Very questionable part of Joe's coaching. Who else is buried that cannot get in.

Nice post Hayden but that sack by Jordan shouldn't have been his. Wilson actually got the QB to go down and Jordan just got lucky to be there.

Agree with you on the Vikings player OB at the end of the half. The weird thing is that he actually bobbled the ball, so that OB foot would have been his second foot. They didn't see enough evidence to overturn in any way, but if they ruled that player OB when that foot hit, that wasn't even a catch.

Good job Hayden.

The penalty that Vernon got was inexcusable in my opinion. The penalty directly led to the pooch kick off and the fumble and ultimate TD by the Vikings. I was screaming at the TV when that happened.

The penalty against Wilson was absurd. I was sure they were going to pick that flag up......but no.

The defense is alarming. Not sure what happened, but they don't look good right now.

On a positive note, I was watching the game in a bar that was full of Ravens fans. Boy were they upset.......

Ryan Tannehill played like a BOSS!!!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Miko has about as good a chance of shutting up as I have of getting my dog to sing christmas carols.

I could see a new DT, MLB, CB and FS next year.

The whole thing w/ Damien W & Jason F are not new concepts to the phins... I recall it taking forever for Wanny to play Yeremiah Bell.

I could see a new DT, MLB, CB and FS next year.

Here is my conundrum w/ the 1st round pick... Shelton DT Washington or Gordon RB Wisconsin.

Zach Vigil MLB Utah ST could be acquired in round 3.

Great post game post as usual. thanks.

Could it be that Ross had his "feelers" out for Harbaugh and possible other candidates and that played a role in the announcement today?

Very questionable part of Joe's coaching. Who else is buried that cannot get in.

maybe tripp, mccain, lamichael james etc, i don't think he has any idea of how to use his talent, can't help but feel we should've had at least two more wins
