Positives

* While they lost the Time of Possession 32:35 to 27:25, considering the amount of rushing yards by the Jets, the Dolphins did a good job keeping drives alive in the 2nd half and getting off the field on defense.
* Red Zone offense. While only two trips, they did score a TD on one of them going 1-2.
* Ran the ball effectively in the Red Zone on the TD drive.
* Ryan Tannehill's 4th quarter drive that got the Dolphins into chip shot field goal range for what turned out to be the game winner. Tannehill's strikes to Dion Sims on the final drive for 18 and 17 yards were money throws and catches in a big spot.
* The line gets a tip of the cap in the final drive with all the changes that occurred after Samson Satele left with an injury. Pouncey moved to C, Smith bumped over to RG and Colledge re-entered to LG. The "musical chairs" upfront did not stop the drive.
* Tannehill was solid. He took what was given to him. RT finished 25 of 35 for 235 yards. He averaged 6.7 per attempt and had one interception. His steady hand kept his team in the game and they found a way to win at the end of the game.
* Lamar Miller 56 yards on 13 carries for 4.3 per carry and 1 TD. He came up big in the 2nd half.
* Mike Wallace had 69 yards on 6 receptions for 11.5 per catch.
* Jarvis Landry 68 yards on 8 catches with an average of 8.5 per reception.
* Sims 58 yards on 4 receptions. 14.5 average.
* Shelley Smith played well at LG. The run game was exponentially better with him in the game
* Red Zone defense. The Jets were 0-1.
* In the second half, the run defense stiffened up. After a big first half, the Jets were held to 67 yards on 20 carries.
* The pass rush woke up in the second half.
* After a Dolphins turnover, the defense responded in sudden change situation. They ended up pushing the Jets out of field goal range and forced a punt.
* Cameron Wake's sack. He came off the snap with some much energy and jacked Jeff Cumberland back into Geno Smith's lap. It pushed the Jets out of field goal range.
* Koa Misi had a big sack pushing a Jets FG attempt further back. Nick Folk missed the field goal attempt, leading to the Dolphins game winning drive.
* Jelani Jenkins. Jenkins had great coverage on the Jets' last play of the game on Cumberland. His coverage forced the ball up in the air and it was intercepted. Jenkins finished with 16 TOT with 9 solo. He also had 2 TFL and 1 QB hit.
* Reshad Jones. Jones cinched the game with an interception. He also became more of an enforcer in stopping the run in the 2nd half. He finished with 11 TOT with 9 of the solo variety.
* Dion Jordan deflected punt.
* Caleb Sturgis was 3 of 4 on field goals.
* Sturgis' touchback on his final kick off.
* Brandon Fields averaged 54 yards on his punts with a long of 60.
* Folk misses.
* Calvin Pace getting hit in the face mask on an easy pick.
* Limited penalties. Only 3 for 20 yards.
* Joe Philbin made a good challenge on a possible strip on Chris Ivory. It looked like the ball was pried loose, but there might not have been enough visual evidence. Based on the flow of the game at that point, the team needed something. While it failed, it was a good idea.
* Kevin Coyle made great half time adjustments to stop the Jets running game. His defense was ready when the Jets did elect to pass.
* Good to see Bill Lazor stay committed to the run in the 2nd half.
* The Dolphins won a close game for the first time this year.
* Great crowd. The take over by Dolphins fans at MetLife was tremendous.

Negatives

* Turnover Differential: 1-1.
* The offense was 5-13 on 3rd down.
* Tannehill's interception. RT seemed to hold on to the ball, pressure came at his feet and in desperation he threw to his outlet in Miller. The throw was low, but Miller somehow tipped the ball up in the air right to a Jets defender for the pick. It was unfortunate play that happened after Jordan's punt deflection.
* Tannehill missed some wide open receivers down the field on a few occasions.
* Mike Wallace drop in the end zone. For some reason, he went up with one hand for the grab. If he went to catch it with two hands, it would have gone for six.
* The pass protection allowed some hits on Tannehill. There were times that the ball could have come out sooner.
* Daryn Colledge holding call negating a positive play.
* The run defense was bowled over for 277 yards on 49 carries for an average of 5.7 per rush. The Dline was manhandled in the 1st half.
* The Jets converted 7-13 on 3rd down.
* Missed tackles.
* There defenders that were undisciplined in their responsibilities within the defense.
* Jelani Jenkins not getting a Jets fumble that was at his feet within the Jets' 10 yard line.
* Sturgis' missed field goal.
* Pooch kicks.
* Caleb Sturgis pooch kick that went out of bounds.
* The Dolphins weak start gave life to a struggling opponent.
* On a crucial 3rd down in the 2nd half, the Dolphins had 12 players on the field forcing them to use a timeout.
* Jeff Cumberland's cheap shot on Cameron Wake. Legal or not, that block was uncalled for.
* ESPN had a tough broadcast in my opinion. At the start of the game, when they went to a replay, the picture was shuttering in and out. From there, they showed only three replays for the viewers of a Dolphins' challenge. Later in the game, they were scanning the owner's box and Woody Johnson, they quickly zoomed back to action as they barely got back to a play in which the Jets fumbled and recovered. It is disappointing when action is taking place on the field, but the TV productions are viewing the crowd or getting facial shots of the game's participants.

Overall Assessment

* I told this board this week that there was way too much being said from the national media, to the local writers to posters on this site, that the Fins would roll the Jets. I did not think that would happen one bit, but I did think Miami would win a close game. Though, I was getting ripped and killed for my take, it sure played out the way I figured.
* The run defense has issues. It will be tested for the next four weeks of the season after the poor displays versus the Broncos and 1st half against the Jets. Players need to play more physical and do their assignments. Between defenders not tackling nor reading their keys, it has led to dreadful work against the run. At least in the 2nd half of tonight's game, they buckled down and performed much better.
* We should not sleep on the CB situation right now either. Obviously, the Jets tried nothing through the air. With Joe Flacco and some outstanding receivers coming next week and Tom Brady and company the week following, Miami has a lot of work to do to prepare for teams with potent passing attacks.
* The rotation at LG has to stop. Shelley Smith is outplaying Daryn Colledge by a lot at this point. Smith is a very good run blocker and does okay in the pass protection. Colledge is not brining much to the table at this point.
* Dion Sims is emerging right in front of us. Sims is making big catches. He is becoming more reliable by the week as a receiver. His blocking is great in the run game and in pass protection. Sims is developing into a productive, all-around TE.
* Special teams were a big factor tonight. Outside of the Sturgis miss and the kick off going out of bounds, quietly the special teams helped keep Miami around in this game…add to it that the Jets missed two field goals and the special teams were huge tonight.
* Great to see the team win a close game for the first time this season.
* How beaten did Rex Ryan look in his post game press conference? He was almost in tears.
* I cannot help, but think that Rex Ryan made a statement in his own way to John Idzick. I think he said, "you want to force Geno Smith on me, I will respond by running it 49 times and show the world what I think of him as a QB". By letting Smith throw it 13 times, it screams to what Ryan and his staff thinks of Idzick's draft pick.
* MetLife Stadium looked like Sun Life Stadium at the start of tonight's game.
* Got great scoreboard help this week. Dolphins fans could not ask for anything more.
* With that said, there is a lot of work to do. Improvements have to made in all three phases of the game order to compete. However, I think this team makes those improvements and finds ways to get better.
* After hearing Ray Lewis talk up the Ravens tonight, here is hoping Miami drills Baltimore next week.

Good stuff, Hayden.

And good call on the close game.

Also, re: Miami's OL and beyond weak run DL -- bad matchup against Baltimore cause they will own the downfield pass if the front four can't play manly defense against the run.

And the OL will probably not allow downfield passing in return (to take advantage of Baltimore's weakness).

It's a tough matchup. Miami's OL and DL need a miraculous turnaround.

My wife hates me because I kept her awake with my cheering and whining. LOL. Extra Christmas present I guess.

By the way, I would look to sign Damian Williams if Hartline is injured significantly.

Good write-up

Joe Philbin made a good challenge on a possible strip on Chris Ivory. It looked like the ball was pried loose, but there might not have been enough visual evidence. Based on the flow of the game at that point, the team needed something. While it failed, it was a good idea.

The head ref was in his 1st year as head ref. Not sure if this is his first MNF game in that role, but I have a hunch that he might have been a little too afraid to overturn a call like that on that stage in that spotlight.

Thanks Hayden - great analysis as always. I would add one more positive to your expansive list. Full marks to RJ Stanford to come in this week and play as a starting CB and not screw it up. With the huge number of injuries to our DBs, the coaches did a terrific job in preparing RJ to come in like this, literally off the street. OK, RJ knew the defensive system from last season, but he was principally a Special Teams contributor, not a starting CB. Geno wasn't given much of an opportunity to throw the ball, but RJ did all that we could have asked for and hopefully has allowed Finnegan more time to recover.

* Enjoyable game. Divisional games given the familiarity and defensive intensity level are so much more interesting than non division games at this point of the season

* I kept remembering that their offensive coordinator went 0-16 with the Lions. That's damned hard to do. Likewise it's difficult to blow a game with the line of scrimmage avalanching in your favor and rushing attempts nearing 50, but I retained hope, convinced that if any team could screw this up, it's the Jets and Mornhinweg. Hard to believe they never ran a play fake off one of those jet sweeps in the second quarter when everything was trending in their favor and we hadn't yet adjusted and started to attack.

* Major kudos to Lamar Miller for getting up after the interception and making that tackle. If that play scores, we lose. The Dolphins have been excellent in denying touchdowns on those sudden change plays all reason. Well coached and great determination. In contrast, the Jets have been inept in that type of situation in recent years. Notice all the Jets players who failed to recognize the correct player to block. Tunnel vision. They force so few turnovers they have no idea how to proceed once it happens

* We were unfair to Ryan Tannehill in the first half, and for the bulk of three quarters. It wasn't a 20 Yard Box. More like 10 Yard Box. Downfield may not be his strength but you can't abandon it completely. It was driving me nuts. You even had Jon Gruden mocking the offense considering how much tape he had to watch to find any downfield throws. The Jets were extremely well prepared for our underneath crossing garbage, the plays that have been cruising upfield for easy gains against softer and poorer coached defenses. Fortunately Lazor took off the leash just in time

* I have no idea how the squib kickoff remains in use. By anybody. Rank idiocy. LSU blew the Alabama game via the squib kickoff and Georgia gave away the Georgia Tech game last Saturday with a moronic squib kickoff with less than 20 seconds remaining. Dan Fouts used to say that he begged for a squib kick, given the high percentage of great field position. Squib kickoffs are pure fear. Irrational fear, given the percentages. So many things can go wrong when the ball is struck low with so many players available to grab it, already in great field position. I was thrilled that we allowed Sturgis to kick deep after taking the lead

* Entering the game I was concerned that the Jets were starting Geno Smith and not Mike Vick. They weren't going anywhere with Vick. Besides, his flat trajectory never varies while Geno can occasionally execute the perfect loft. The way it worked out, it's great that Geno was out there. Vick might have known enough not to take sacks twice on 3rd down while already in field goal range. I particularly enjoyed the second one, with the cute play action on 3rd and 7. Maybe one person in the TV viewing audience was fooled by that one.

* Our kicker beat their kicker 75% to 50%. That may be like winning a golf match 82 to 94 but I'll take it. I'd also like to commend their special team genius #15 for all the stupid penalties he took. Nothing like the ever-popular block in the back to influence field position in a low scoring game in which field position is critical

* I hope nobody is irritated at the lack of a margin in this game. Too many things were working against that. I was nervous all week. Many of my friends had New York plus the points, especially after it jumped for some reason. The Dolphins beat the Jets by daylight on the road last season. That seldom repeats within the division, routing the same twice consecutively on their home field. Also, the Jets were embarrassed last Monday. So that's a double dose of pride we had to overcome. This might have been the Jets' last big effort of the season and we survived it

From Gang Green:

Like a deflated balloon. Thought I'd never see rex like this. This is his second worst press conference. The worst was him addressing the media about his fetish.

:)

Thanks...great as usual. :brewskis:

* In the second half, the run defense stiffened up. After a big first half, the Jets were held to 67 yards on 20 carries.

I think we need to keep Starks and Mitchell in the game more to help stack against the run. We can't keep putting 8 or 9 in the box, good QB's will kill us.

Great job Hayden.

A couple of thoughts on your comments.....

Jones INT and his tackling in the second half were tremendous as you pointed out. When he is on his game....that guy can flat out play. The rest of the tackling by the team was pretty poor in general. This seems to be a trend.

Your absolutely right about Sims.....growing up right in front of us. Good to see and would love to see him and Clay on the field at the same time and us use the middle of the field more to push the passing game down the field.

Glad you survived last night. It sounded a little touch and go leading up to the game as to whether you would ever come out of the man cave......

Agreed. Odrick can also play end to had more beef to the line too. Not a doubt that adjustments have to be made.

Gator Hoskins has great hands, I keep rooting for the undrafted rookie but he did have one of only three penalties we had for the game. We should absolutely dominate this team when we see them again at home. They are done and Miami needs to step on the throat and develop the swagger to compete in the playoffs.
