First bout: Man that Berto guy from Winter Haven looks like a budding superstar. Thick guy. Power, great speed. Big puncher. Throws those uppercuts. Threw 80 jabs in the 4th round alone. We'll have to see what his chin is like. But the guy looks like the real deal.

As for the fight, the ref was pretty poor. Screwed up the knockdown. Should have stopped it earlier. And Figueroa's corner was horrible. Guy's taking a beating. And they're admonishing him, playing his wife/family against him. You know he wanted to stop, and they wouldn't let him. They should have thrown in the towel. Instead, they could have easily gotten him killed.

Jermaine Taylor's up.
 
OMG, it's Harold Lederman.

First time I've actually seen Lederman in like 20 years I think.
 
I don't think I've ever heard a story like Ouma's. Good lord.
 
Basically one guy outclassing another. Taylor being the thoroughbred. But the interesting thing is that it seems like we've found another Wayne McCullough type chin in Ouma. Taylor simply can't hurt him.
 
i like taylor but damn he is sloppy.

calzaghe would punish taylor.
 
I hope that fight happens. Calzaghe gets up for the Americans. He could be the one to definitively take him, judges be damned.

Work out at the same gym as Berto. Great guy. His older brother also has his own gym [TigerWorld] where his teaches Judo,Grapling or UFC style fighting.
My wife has taken kickboxing lessons from him. I can still take her down when needed.:D

But yeah, Berto looks like he could dominate the division. They're trying to get him some fights to polish him. But it looks like finding non-champions to to do that might be tough.

I hope one day he and Floyd Mayweather can meet up.

I sort of understand where you coming from but Jermain is a much better boxer then Lacy. Lacy's a puncher who can't box, that's why he was beaten so definitively by Calzaghe, while Jermain on the other hand is capable of boxing and won't be looking for the one punch knockout to win a fight like Lacy does. Calzaghe will never be able to duplicate his performance on Jermain that he did on Lacy and I personally give Jermain the edge in that fight against Calzaghe. As much as Calzaghe gets up for American opponents, he has never once fought in America and is always used to being the crowd favorite in his fights. That's going to be a different experience when he fights Jermain in Vegas or somewhere like that. Plus Calzaghe has never been on the big stage like Jermain has, so who knows how he's going to react. Jermain beat Bernard Hopkins twice, a guy who can change his gameplan on the fly and one of the craftiest fighters of all time. I think Calzaghe is stepping up to a different level when he fights Jermain while for Jermain it will be just another day at the office. The guy drew with Winky, beat Bernard twice, and then fought Ouma last night who might be a blown up junior middleweight but is a very tough, game opponent who could easily beat a Cory Spinks and reclaim the title at junior middleweight. That's some pretty tough competition compared to Calzaghe's who's only great victory came against an overrated Lacy who can't box and fights to land that one great shot because of his power. Plus it isn't like Calzaghe looked any better in his last fight against Bika who is a couple of notches below Ouma in terms of quality of opponent!


As for last night, Berto impressed me big time and has a bright future but I knew that coming into the fight. I would have been more surprised had the guy he was fighting went the distance. As for Jermain, he didn't look great but he clearly won the fight. Obviously he didn't follow his gameplan like he should have because he was trying to impress the home crowd with a knockout but that will never happen against Winky or Calzaghe because A. he won't be fighting at home with a ton of distractions and B. he will go into those fights looking to win, not looking for the knockout so he won't try to do the same stupid things he did last night that gave Ouma opportunity's to land clean shots on Jermain. But also what's being over-looked is how game and how tough of an opponent Ouma is. Rumor has it he won't be able to make it down to 154 again but if he can he will be a force to be reckoned with in that division again and I think we could expect a title around his waiste at that weight in the next year, especially with GBP backing him!

P.S. The open scoring is ridiculous. Jermain basically admitted he took the last 2 rounds off because he knew he won the fight which is a joke and exactly what people said would happen if we ever got open scoring. The WBC needs to go back to closed scoring this way fighters don't do what Jermain did last night the last 2 rounds of the fight!

That's why he's turning away that undefeated WBA/WBC from Denmark (Kessler). It would definitely be a step up for him. But it would be exactly what he wants. So I don't think there'd be any problem with him being prepared like we saw in his last fight.

I didn't know about the open scoring going in. So when I heard Michael Buffer announce the score after round four, I was like "WTF??" The open scoring only works in a close fight. Otherwise it kills suspense and causes the fighters to do just what Taylor did last night. Awful idea.

As for Ouma, every time Taylor landed one of those bombs, I kept thinking to myself (in Roy Jones inflection): "Gra-night chin". :lol:
 
I love Jermain. That sounds really gay. Anyway a little off topic I was talking with Sugar Shane last night at his sons birthday party and he says he's lookin to fight Cintron then Margarito. He said he wants to give Margarito a big fight at 147.

I agree that Calzaghe is ****y but I still think that you implying that Calzaghe would have an easy time fighting (and adjusting) in America is wrong because he's never done it before. He's been boxing as a pro since 1993 and the farthest he's fought from the England area is Germany. Plus look at his record, he's never fought someone the likes of Jermain Taylor. Jermain can fight and box so he'll be ready for whatever Calzaghe can bring. And about Kessler, Calzaghe is just trying to talk him down, Kessler would be there with him all night and Calzaghe knows it, that's why he's talking him down. Kessler has beaten just as good of opponents as Calzaghe and had earned his shot at him but instead of fighting the best Calzaghe chooses Peter Manfredo Jr. Hmmmmm, I wonder why? HBO has went on record stating they would air a Kessler-Calzaghe fight so that's not the problem. I wonder why he won't fight this guy? Calzaghe's fighting Manfredo overseas and Kessler said he would have no problem fighting Calzaghe in his backyard, so it's obvious Calzaghe don't want anything to do with him. I think people favoring Calzaghe over Jermain is insane. Jermain fights EVERYONE and his track record shows it. He may not win pretty but he's still in there battling world class fighters fight in and fight out while the same can't be said about Calzaghe. Plus if Calzaghe really craved the American stage, he would have already have capitlized on it instead of fighting Manfredo in his backyard. If he craved the American stage why would be not fight one of the most recognizable boxers (thanks to the contender) in America? But just to let you know, this is not implying that Calzaghe isn't a good fighter and isn't capable of beating Jermain. It's just stating that he's over-hyped and has to beat someone besides Lacy to show me he's the real deal. People hate on Ricky Hatton but before he came to America he beat Kosta (a great fighter). Calzaghe beat Lacy, not anywhere nears Kosta's level or class of fighter!
