As mentioned on ESPN radio today by a guest on Colin Cowherd's show... a guy brought up the idea that if you make a head coach's contract escape proof, you may scare some guys off. So you tack a "completion bonus" on the contract that gives the guy a hefty bonus for seeing his contract through to the end instead of jumping early.
Not a new idea (we got one years ago for sticking with a summer job till Labor Day) but an important one since Saban's departure.
Should Wayne zero in on a guy he really likes, but has some reservations about how long he might stick with the job, this might be an answer. Now a team competing for our next coach's services wouldn't just have to beat his current deal in salary, they'd have to beat the completion bonus as well.
Doesn't make the contract "escape proof", but dangles a carrot in front of a guy who might be "listening" to offers instead of coaching our team.
Thoughts...?
