I know it is the popular choice to want Cowher or Gruden to come back and lead us to the promised land. Fact is that they won't be coming here. Why? Surely it isn't about the money. Ross can pay them whatever they want. There are a few reasons...

1. Each has it made in the shade with their current gigs. They have family time, are still "active" in knowing about the game but they don't have to put in the hours or the hassle and they don't have to deal with people like us (the fans). They just punch the clock, do their work and go home. And they both get paid very nicely to do so. They have no desire to give that up.

2. Name me one head coach that has won a Super Bowl ring as the head coach of 2 NFL teams? Yep...hasn't happened. Why? Because for the most part it is catching lightning in a bottle. For some it is having the right players, the right system at the right time. To get all of that to come together in a new place is about as hard as it gets. See Parcells. Hell, see Jimmy Johnson if you need that reminder.

3. They have been out of the game for so long, the game has changed and they don't "command" that influence they had before. Not to say they still can't scare the crap out of player with that jaw or looking like Chucky. They can. However, the game as so far passed them by that it isn't the same as when they coached. It has worked 1 time in the NFL where a coach was removed from the game, came back and finally won a ring. 1 time. More often the results are Joe Gibbs than Dick Vermiel.

Then we have the same names we always hear for jobs. The guys who have been around the block with other teams. Guys who have won a ring but might need a new home. Pass. We need someone who is respected. Someone who commands authority. Someone who demands respect. Someone who is fresh, hungry and wants to make that impact. That doesn't always happen with the retread. They are just happy to be given another shot. Just happy to have the job.

I know, finding that guy is hard. The key isn't always to go with the hot guy. See Leslie Frazier. The key isn't to go with the guy you like. See Philbin. I know where you won't find that guy...and that is from someone sitting in a tv studio. Either you pull the guy out of college or you get that assistant who is ready to make the move. Not just any assistant....that is what gets you Cam Cameron, Joe Philbin and Tony Sparano. It is tough to find the one....not many do. There is a reason few coaches have long tenure...part of it is a win now mentality and the other part is buyers remorse. You don't know what you have until they have a couple of years under their belt. Either they can hang or they can't. The majority can't.

So who do we get?

I have to take Kevin Sumlin off my list (though he is #1) because of his contract at A&M. He would be a fool to leave that deal.

So here is where I see us going (or should be going):

1. Mark Dantonio
2. David Shaw
3. Kris Richard
4. Darrell Bevell

Top 2 are proven college coaches who have build winning programs and everything you look for in a head coach. One comes from the O and one comes from the D. However, both have built programs proficient on both sides of the ball. We are in a win-win by taking either of these guys. Again, I would take Sumlin over either of them but I just don't think he will be available for the taking.

In Richard and Bevell we poach the Pete Carroll coaching tree which has proved to be nothing short of a treasure trove for coaching. I like Richard because he is a former player (one year here in Miami) and he gets what it takes to on the field and off to win. He also has that fire and passion to get the most out of these guys. He will command respect and that is what we need. In Bevell we get someone who can get the most out of our talent on O but I am not sure if he is 100% the total package...yet. Still, I wouldn't be angry if he was the hire.

IMO, we can't go wrong with any of these guys and it is who our attention should be focused on once Philbin is fired.

I will not exempt coaches without HC experience, but I do think it is important this time around. T

The one guy without HC experience I really like is Teryl Austin.

Parcells is a bad example of your thesis. Yes, he never won another Super Bowl, but he took Patriots to one, and he turned the Jets from worst to the AFC Championship game.

The winners in recent years have been guys who failed as HC the first time (or two) and learned from it - Belichick, Carroll. And you mentioned Vermeil, who won a Super Bowl on his second team. My top choice would be McDaniels, but doubtful he'd choose us.

Sean McDermott is a guy I would definitely keep my eye on!!!

tough part is finding someone available that has good experience as a head coach.

Kris Richard could be a guy to keep an eye on too, but you have to understand he would be coming in with very little experience overall.

Parcells took 3 laughingstock franchises at the time and turned them into Super winners or contenders(NYG, NE, NYJ) and dallas was stuck in mediocrity for many years post dynasty and he got them back to postseason regulars.

I want someone who's done it before successfully with playoffs wins. No more on the job training like Sabin , Cam , Tony and Joe.

Saying something can't happen because it hasn't yet is ridiculous. So nobody has won a championship with two teams yet, does that make it impossible? And how can you say the game has passed up Cowher and Gruden when there job is to literally analayze games and comment on them? It's not like Joe Gibbs because he had other things going on outside of football and was like 70 years old when he returned.

HC experience is a must. For HC who got promoted from lower ranks, their second HC gig is usually better. Sometimes the promotion from lower ranks works but the organization needs to be already strong and stable, have a strong GM. HC experience does not need to be gained in the NFL, but a candidate should have that leadership experience either in the NFL or at a good college program.

Cowher is almost 60 and has been out of the game a long time. Vermeil was around the same age when he returned but I don't think that is a good recipe for success. Gibbs was 64 when he came back and people forget he did lead Wash to the playoffs twice. Wash from 1993-2014 has only made 4 PO apps, 2 of them in the years Gibbs came back.

The NFL is rife with retreads...They don't really get "fired" anymore, they just switch cities and positions.
Miami is a hot spot for hiring & firing retreads...NE...not so much...coincidence?

the only way thru this is to hope that Steve abdicates to one of the 2 daughters (or step-son/daughter), and that they sell/lead us out of this "40+yrs malaise"

Maybe not but I still think Cowher gets more respect from a team than Philbin ever would.

My friend mentioned Mike Smith as a food for thought suggestion. He got pretty far with Matty Ice and a good WR corps for a few years, a lot of offense production. If he had a solid DC I could see that staff doing some good things with this roster.
