Well folks. At about 6 mil a year, I think its safe to say Pennington is our starter. We can also safely say Henne is on the roster. Even if he werent just drafted this year by the men currently in charge, he has outperformed everyone so far in camp.
So that leaves two men battling for one spot. Most likely the backup QB spot. I think if thats the case its a pretty fair bet that the FO would have to plan on playing the backup at some point this season too, even if its just for a few games. Pennington has a history of missing time.
So lets examine this FAIRLY and LOGICALLY and I will bash later
First we have Chainsaw Charlie(well I guess I will bash sooner than later Thanks X-Pacolypse.) Anyways I think I will stick with this name for McClown from now on because A) Its just plain funny and B) If he remains on the team it will be only as a backup. So Chainsaw Charlie it is.
Second we have the fan favorite Johnny Beck.
Lets examine a few points that should be deciding factors. FAIRLY and LOGICALLY.
1) Age. I believe Chainsaw Charlie is 28, Beck will be 27 soon. Push
2) Experience- Now this issue is key if they plan on putting either man in the backup role. If they dont mind Henne being the backup, its less of a factor if they dont mind keeping Beck as 3rd string.
Chainsaw - been in the league several years, starting experience
Beck - practically a rookie
Advantage Charlie. Again if they want to make sure Henne dosent play this year, its a HUGE advantage for Chainsaw sticking.
3) Money - Chainsaw I believe is a 3 mil a year guy. He basically has a deal similar to that of what Jacksonville gave Lemon. Its a backup type contract....HMMMM Plus if you cut Chainsaw, there will be a hit to the cap due to that bonus he got if Im not mistaken. Neither one is expensive to keep, but advantage - Chainsaw given the factors I spoke of.
Looking at those 3 things Id say its a pretty big deal for McCown. Like I said, this might come down to whether or not they really want to put Henne out there if Pennington gets injured. If they dont, it seems like keeping Chainsaw would be the right move.
We could very well see a battle tomorrow night by letting Henne just sit out. The gang might just want to see who could handle playing in real games better if Pennington gets injured.
I have no doubt this FO has designs on competing for a strong 8-10 win season and a playoff chance. They will want a guy to get in there and keep us floating if they have to play several games.
But, hey if they feel like Henne could do ok for a few games, then they might keep Beck around. Or if they feel like Beck could handle starting a few games if necessary and give us a shot to win when he does, then it would make sense to keep Beck.
The only real thing Beck has going for him is the fact he is only in year two. But, again, I think its pretty fair to say these guys, like me, feel strong about Henne being the future. I dont think they feel they need to keep Beck around for the purpose of being our starter in 1-2 years. So Im not so sure the fact that Beck is only in year two helps him out much.
I think what would help Beck is proving to the FO that he can handle backing up Pennington and doing a nice job when his number is called to make a start or two. It just seems LOGICAL to me that if he dosent prove he is more capable than McCown of doing that, that he is indeed a goner.
After examining things, I think its pretty safe to say that Beck is history. So that just leaves one thing to say to the Beck fan club..........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZZfuCJ970w
