After finishing the 2005 season just one win – and perhaps one Dwyane Wade injury – away from a trip to the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat very easily could have stood still and counted on a year of internal growth to carry the team to the next level. But Pat Riley has never been one to simply wait for something to happen.
The Heat's team president made the boldest move of the offseason Tuesday by acquiring Antoine Walker, Jason Williams and James Posey in a monster trade involving five teams and 13 players. The move coincided with the signing of Shaquille O'Neal to a five-year, $100 million contract.
The roster shakeup was a direct reaction to what Riley and the Heat brass witnessed in the team's seven-game series loss to Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals. Wade was the only Miami player capable of making a play from the perimeter in that series, and when he was sidelined by his rib injury, it spelled doom for Miami. The Heat became one-dimensional, deliberately throwing the ball into O'Neal on every possession.
Williams will step in and start at the point in place of Damon Jones, whom the Heat would love to re-sign as a backup. Williams is one of the best penetrators in the NBA, and with a very good three-point stroke, he could be very effective for Miami...
