Just thought I would visit and say hello. I'm not a fan of the Dolphins,(well I used to not be) but I am a BYU fan here close to the team and thought I would just give my opinion on John Beck.
First off, think Ty Detmer with much better physical skills. Beck is a very heady player, as backed by his GPA and high wonderlic score. He is an absolute film rat. He wants to be good, and he proves it by his work ethic. DO NOT believe ANY report of Beck not having a strong arm. He has short arms, not weak. He can fling it. But he's not perfect. His delivery might need some tweaking to a more over handed throw. Some say he's short(he;s two inches taller than drew Brees.) He had an NFL-sized line ahead of him(we grow em big out here in Utah,Wyoming, and Idaho) so whatever stats he produced were looking over them.
He absolutely got his head handed to him early in his college career because at the time he was suffering under the worst head coach in BYU history. (granted Lavell Edwards set the bar pretty high) Coach Crowton may be a good OC (new LSU OC), but he did not do an inexperianced Beck any favors by throwing him to the wolves under such bad coaching and gameplans, and the records reflected it.
But I think it says alot that Beck LEARNED from those crappy times, when most would try to forget. He to this day won't say anything bad about Coach Crowton, and says the blame for the losses is for everyone, himself included. I have never heard any excuse. You got to understand Coach Crowton may have had good intentions, but his time was an absolute mess on and off the field. Everyone else blamed him, but Beck stood up and took his share of the blame.
Beck has grown as a QB before my eyes, and I tell you I don't see him stopping. I know age might be a concern for you. He's 25 now, will be 26 in August. His age will only be an issue depending on the amount of time he takes in developing. If he shows enough to start this year at the age of 26, then I don't think it's that big a deal. If he starts in his second year at 27, again may not be that big of a deal. His performance will either make people forget his age, or enhance the issue.
This past year I've seen Beck lead his offense to 55 points against a top ten passing defense in the nation.(Wyoming) This year I saw him go into a huge conference top 20 road game against TCU, who has a GREAT defense, and put up 31 points in a BYU rout. All while having BOTH ankles heavily taped from sprains that kept him out of the previous game. He didn't even walk to his classses, a worker carted him around to his classes. But he played against TCU, and played well while not being able to run at all. He is a definate gamer. BYU killed all but one conference game, so Beck's stats are including all the running plays they ran at end of games, and Beck not even playing the fourth quarter.
The only close game in their conference(Utah) saw Beck lead his team down the field in 1 minute 9 seconds, including a very clutch 4th down throw and an INCREDIBLE last second TD to win the hostile road game. He absolutely showed the ability to take a team on his back and refuse to lose. Then he went to the bowl game and he and his TE Jonny Harline made Oregon look like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off. Actually the chickens would have done better. It was 100% domination.
I'm not here to argue Quinn vs. Beck. (BTW the two met twice in college, and the head to head match-up is 1-1.) I don't know if Beck will be better than him or not. Beck's got work to do, and so does Quinn. But just from what I've seen from John Beck these last four years, I just know that since you guys did pass on Quinn, i don't think you guys could have done better with that 2nd round pick. But we will all see what really happens. Trent Edwards might be the next Montona, who really knows in these things.
Good luck this year, well except when you play my team:) (Raiders) I'll be rooting for you and Beck otherwise.
