I know what CBA stands for, What I really do not understand is what are they discussing?? Who wins having what?? weren't the owners and players making a lot of dough this year, and last year...

So exactly what are they fighting for???

The CBA is all about the have's and have-nots. It's about richer franchises sharing profits with smaller franchises so that they can 'compete' with the larger markets. It also deals with things like income from sport games like Madden. It's a huge mess, and I seriously doubt that they will work something out before the deadline.

CBA is the "Collective Bargaining Agreement". The contract agreed upon between the NFL owners and the players. The current one expires in March and the two sides have not come to a new agreement.

With the CBA not only was there a maximum salary cap but there was also a minimum total amount each team had to spend on salaries

Believe it or not there are quite a lot of owners who would happily spend a lot less than the minimum especially in the current economic climate even if it was just for one season. An uncapped season would help them slash the wage bill, make things more manageable and pretty much start over

Everything from revenue sharing to the possibility of an NBA-style rookie salary cap to drug testing. Some owners just want the elimination of the salary cap for one year, which means the elimination of a salary floor, which means they can cut whoever they want and save money, MLB-style.

There's also fundamental mistrust on both sides. For example, the old CBA stated that the owners get about 60% of total revenue and the players get about 40%. The players' union believes that the NFL is hoarding money and lying about total revenues, but the NFL says that even if they showed the players' union their books, they wouldn't budge from that position.

It's a major mess, and there is a distinct possibility that there will be a player lockout in 2011.
