Coach Adam Gase has installed a period for quarterback where he will take a shotgun snap, drop two steps, chop step to the right, chop step to the left, forward, backward and then throw the ball. A complementary drill has the QB dropping and moving around in what would be the pass pocket with several people around him swiping at the football in his hands.

"One, we're trying to create great habits for pocket presence," Gase said. "You try to make things as chaotic as possible so that during the game, it's just normal for them. So you're trying to create chaos as much as possible to make sure they feel that's how it could be in the game and they know how to handle it."

And I ask, what has been one of the significant critiques of Ryan Tannehill in the past?

Pocket presence. He hasn't often shown great instincts in the pocket. He hasn't often seemed to have that innate sense that trouble is coming and what to do about it, where to slide, where to throw, when to throw.

Gase has been working this drill with his QBs for years. I've never seen this drill in Miami the past four years.

If it addresses the issue that it is intended to -- ostensibly, improving Tannehill's pocket presence, this otherwise short drill could pay big dividends in 2016 and beyond.

Finally this is a big improvement to philbins statue drill where tanny drops back and doesn't move until he gets sacked

Sad but promising. Pocket presence has been one of Tannehill's greatest struggles. If you tell me he's not even drilling for game situation, I think he has a more realistic chance to make strides in this area.

I hope this drill helps.....but Tanne's pocket presence critiques are WAAAAAAYYYYY over blown. There is an assumption I think that there is a place to shuffle to when he is almost always receiving pressure from both sides and up the middle. Pocket presence requires there to be a pocket to have presence in and to have somewhere where he can move around. This has been almost nonexistent for Tanne's entire career and has got even worse when injuries hit the likes of Pouncey, Albert, and James. The other thing that is often overlooked is his toughness as a lot of times he is holding on for as long as he can to try and make a completion and taking hits. This isn't due to lack of pocket presence, this is due to necessity for any chance of making a completion.

He is far from perfect, that is not what I am saying....but the majority of the pocket presence issues are line issues giving up pressure from the sides and middle. I do think he could take off and run more. It would help keep those linemen more honest and there are definitely some opportunities for big gains there!

We mat finally have a real coach... Tannehills lack of pocket presence is not overblown.

Interesting article here that shows Tanne was the 8th highest QB in facing pressure but was the third best QB when facing pressure behind only Big Ben who is god like facing pressure, and Drew Brees......he is ahead of Brady!

Actually it kind of is.

As a player, you work on your weakness until it becomes a strength...even a minor improvement to this area could pay huge dividends, especially if the line is improved as well.

I really like our coach so far, anything that helps our QB have more confidence dropping back will only help. With the new line, and support from the HC I expect big things from Ryan this year.

Tannehill is very good at making right read and getting ball out quick when pressured always has been even in his rookie year. He is horrific at eluding pressure

Winner. Winner. Chicken Dinner.

I would hope that AG will allow Ryan to use his mobility/athleticism if things become too chaotic.

He is horrific if the pocket is collapsing on him, which is generally the case. He absolutely can elude pressure and make plays when there is somewhere to escape too!

Some of those highlights are amazing. I often forget about them since the team is often making sooooo many mistakes that the games become hard to watch. Sometimes his pocket presence seems superb, other times not so much. If I'd been hit as many times as he has in the past few years I know I wouldn't be standing, and I'd be so nervous on every pass.

His presence will be much better if three unblocked D lineman aren't running uncontested directly at him on every other play. Sometimes it looked like The Longest Yard when they were trying to teach the QB a lesson.

Some of those throws running backwards and still throwing the ball 40 yards on a rope can only be done by a handful of QBs. Get this kid a line and give him the ability to audible and he is a top tier QB!

This drill has been practiced every year in another variety during Tannehill's tenure. I remember Lazor swatting at Tannehill with a broom in a similar drill. Don't buy the hype. Tannehill is oft sacked when he should throw away the ball or take off. We've seen it with our own eyes.
