The Dolphins would love to add speed at receiver, but with Marty Booker making a strong case to return (despite a $3.7 million 2007 cap number) -- combined with a weak free agent class -- we could see the top four receivers return in 2007. As expected, the team told restricted free agent Wes Welker's agent that they want him back.
The Dolphins like rookie Derek Hagan but want more consistency -- he has failed to hold onto at least seven balls that were catchable. ''You can't judge someone by a few dropped passes,'' he said, noting he dropped only a handful at Arizona State. ``I'm the Pac-10's all-time leading receiver.''
• Among other veterans with big 2007 cap numbers, it's unlikely Dan Wilkinson ($2.2 million), Seth McKinney ($4 million) and Bennie Anderson ($2.1 million) return at those figures, and Kevin Carter ($6.5 million) and Olindo Mare ($2.1 million) remain questions.
Mare has been defending himself, and Nick Saban has, too, noting five of his 10 missed field goals were at least 50 yards. ''When you can still be on top in [touchbacks] after 10 years, that shows it's not a physical issue,'' Mare said.
