The Dolphins would love to add speed at receiver, but with Marty Booker making a strong case to return (despite a $3.7 million 2007 cap number) -- combined with a weak free agent class -- we could see the top four receivers return in 2007. As expected, the team told restricted free agent Wes Welker's agent that they want him back.
The Dolphins like rookie Derek Hagan but want more consistency -- he has failed to hold onto at least seven balls that were catchable. ''You can't judge someone by a few dropped passes,'' he said, noting he dropped only a handful at Arizona State. ``I'm the Pac-10's all-time leading receiver.''
• Among other veterans with big 2007 cap numbers, it's unlikely Dan Wilkinson ($2.2 million), Seth McKinney ($4 million) and Bennie Anderson ($2.1 million) return at those figures, and Kevin Carter ($6.5 million) and Olindo Mare ($2.1 million) remain questions.
Mare has been defending himself, and Nick Saban has, too, noting five of his 10 missed field goals were at least 50 yards. ''When you can still be on top in [touchbacks] after 10 years, that shows it's not a physical issue,'' Mare said.

I'm on the fence about Mare....the guy has single handedly lost several games that we could have won had he not missed key field goals

Mare should be brought back at the Veteran's minimum and we should get another young kicker to compete. Mare has had the job for the last 10 yrs without having to look over his shoulder.

Mare has had competition in camp, just not very good competition. Just last year, we had Kimrin (who was sent to NFL Europe) in camp.

Sorry...I want no part of Mare next season....That dude has cost us 30 points this season all by himself. Spread that over the season and see how many games we could've won.

Missing FG's hurts a team in more ways than one IMO....it can be demoralizing, it can turn momentum, and it costs you points....especially with an offense that sometimes struggles to put points on the board, you've got to have someone back there that you can rely on...he just isn't that guy anymore.

To be honest, I hold my breath everytime he steps on the field to attempt a FG, and even worse, I've been more surprised when he's actually made 'em.

He was good for a long time, but lets move on.

I'll accept Mare back at league minimum. I doubt he'll be willing to take it so he should take a bus pass instead. Mare had a solid run in Miami, more than solid. He was spectacular for the better part of a decade. Nothing lasts forever.

I too am holding my breath, rubbing a rabbit's foot and burning sage everytime he lines up. He is a nightmare now, we need a new kicker!

Mare's not worth the money and I doubt he'd accept the veteran's minimum. I'd be surprised if he's back next year...

Cut Mare's salary to lettuce and bread. If he wins games for us, we'll throw in a few slim jims for Christmas

i have lost some faithe in mare...but i am not ready to cut bait just yet...something like half of his misses are beyond 50 yards. Maybe we should put him in a better position to succeed. A great example is a QB who is an excellent player but cannot throw the ball because his pass protection is horrible...how can you expect a lot of him if we are not doing our job putting him in good situations to succeed... Does mare need improvement? YES... but maybe we are just realizing that over the last 10 years we had a very good kicker, and only after he falters a bit do we see how valuable he was to us at his peak.

But in the end it's prolly about money....Mare is not pulling his share to deserve 2+ million a year. Unless he can be consistent beyond 50 yards he needs a paycut or a new job.

Do you think he's gonna take a pay cut? What do you? Are you the absolute best at what you do? Would you take a pay cut?

All I have to say about that article is...

ALRIGHT WES IS COMING BACK!!!

P.S.
I also have to say "Mare might lead in touchbacks again but we need that powerful leg to get them in between the posts not beside them."

Mare is an 80% career kicker. Hes having a bad season. You dont drop him for one bad year.

If anyone thinks hes lost us games then you havent been watching our lack of pass protection for the first 6 games. Our lack of a run game for all but 2 games. You have to blame Ronnie, Daunte, Joey, the entire oline, and our WRs (too many dropped passes) for losing games. You dont blame the kicker. if your team was doing its job mare would be on for EPs and kickoffs

Mare earned his current contract based on what he brought to the table .... FGs, KOs, and his 'at the time' unique on side kick capability ....

Has he slid a bit ... for sure ... and his current performance doesn't justify the 2+ MIL ... but, his problem is most definately not leg strength -- its accuracy

Just be careful in what you wish for ....

No brotha. When YOUR job is in question then the question becomes, "How did you do YOUR job?" Mare did his poorly. Again, at a sensable salary he's a keeper, no questions asked. But 2 mil for anything short of an all pro kicker is not sensable. Not with all the holes on our offense.
