I see a few posts here of the individual games and peoples opinions on our performance from individual games. I like reading them both good and bad. I would like to remind everyone that this is just preseason and there are going to be plays that we don't have success with and it shouldn't cause people too much concern because Saban and company are using the preseason to experiment with schemes and and player positioning. To see what works and when and who fits and who doesn't. With that said, I'd like to give you some important stats of my own to show how we've done in the three preseason games thus far.

I chose stats that reflect both sides of the ball to give you an overall pictre of our team. The stats I chose are Drives, plays, 1st down, total yards, rushing, Time of possession, what you will see are our total stats from the three games and our opponents total stats. I won't show each team because that would be a big post so it will be a total. Here goes:

<<<<<Mia...........................................Oppo.>>>>>>

drives: 40...........................................34

plays: 246..........................................169

1stdwn: 61..........................................38

Ttl yrd: 963.........................................821

rush: 255.........................................198

TOP: 100:50.......................................78:52 min are just close not exact!

Ok, I think that covers it, as you can see we lead in every category. Keeping in mind this is preseason and those numbers don't really matter, what it does tell you is the coaching is far improved since Saban arrival. By leading in every category that would elude to a fundementally sound football team and IMO that's the base foundation for a championship team, it also explains why Saban is pleased with where we are. I think fans that get upset that we didn't rush well against Carolina you need to see the big picture, the oline blocking will be the last phase of the team to fall in line because it's the hardest thing to do consistently add to that the fact that we have had a new Oline for the last 3 years and it's just a matter of getting the timing down. Thoughts???

Also, might I add, that these statistics are coming from two games that we lost, and one that we won by a 3-point margin.

The time of possession will help keep our defense fresh through the game and melt the opposition defense especially in the heat of Dolphins stadium.

In the Carolina game 16 points came off bad plays on special teams. I know we will be better in the regular season on special teams.

What it says to me is that we are great at converting first downs and stopping them at converting. That is the backbone of success to me. We left points off that we should always take in real games in the first half. Take three unless you know they have a pourous Dline because Our Oline is not great. We are a second half team which does not show in preseason at all.

Your points are well taken, it also reiterates the point of the coaching. Saban will make adjustments at halftime to improve our chances of success for example Buffalo last year, something I don't think Wanny ever did. However this thread was just to show fans that the big picture is what counts and just becaause we are having trouble with some areas "during preseason" the overall outlook is bright.

I can't remember seeing as many receivers so wide open,we will move the ball with long drives eat clock, rest our experienced D.
I can't remember seeing as many defenders rush the opposing QB without being challenged Dom D's always find a way to get to the QB.
The best way to win in the NFL is to get the starting QB out of the game.

Also all three teams were playoff teams in 05 and all three had top D's!!

Interesting thread...Facts can be a bit deceptive. I agree that our first team defense has done an "awesome" job at stopping 3rd down conversions. I believe they have been credited with stopping the other team 13 or 14 out of 16 opportunities.

However, when looking closer at the stats it shows that we have run 80 more plays for only 142 more yards so our yards per play average is far below the other team. While Miami has had to drive down the field 10 yards at a time, our opponents have 4 TD passes over 50 yards and 1 TD pass for 48 yards. In other words our opponents have not had to accumulate first downs. Throw in the 98 yard kickoff return and total yards are pretty close.

Of course, this is preseason so best guage is to make judgements when first team is on the field. Not to mention we can throw all this out after next week and begin again for real. Woooooooooooooo

Good post. More reason for optimism - absolutely. The 1st Down stats are significant. I am confident that Hud will whip this O-Line into shape over the next couple weeks - yes the front D-Line's from Jax/ Tampa/ Carolina are some of the NFL's best. Give them credit, but your post makes it clear that we WON the battle in most categories.

ok, but what is the total of our 1st half score compared to the opposition's ??
Better yet what was the score at the half in each game ?

I'm asking because i'm not exactly sure but i believe we we're ahead at the half all 3 games. Not sure tho.
