Who would we have taken if John Beck was gone before our pick? Since we tried to trade up we must have thought he was going to be gone by our pick. So was he our original target and what was the backup plan since they took a very big chance with the Qb position that could have backfired. I assume they thought a few Qb's were pretty equal with Beck since we did not panic and move up. Maybe Trent Edwards was the next option or maybe Kevin Kolb was the original target. I know that we will never know the answer to these questions. Another reason that I dont' think we were so in love with Beck over anybody else because this could have easily not happened and then we would be hearing the front office say the same thing about whoever they took.

they tried trading up to get him in the late 1st round, so he was our first choice at QB

One thing we know for sure: They had Beck rated higher than Quinn. :cooldude:

Simple...they would have taken the best available Polynesian offensive center! :sidelol:

we got lucky IMO... not only did we get our guy, but we couldn't overspend even when we tried... nice to have a break go our way for change.

I think THIS guy was our number one all along dlockz. We worked him out good and had an even better evaluation of Quinn to compare things against. They KNOW they live and die by THIS draft so I believe they tried three times to go up. I had considered the Kolb issue...wondered like you, that was "my" second choice before becoming better educated about Beck, but after looking closer at the whole picture, I also believe we honestly had Beck above Quinn.

I have no answer for who was next...

I don't even want to think about it. lol

Edwards sucks! Stanton is a head case. The Eagles were trying to blow their draft on Kolb. Who knows? Troy Smith? :dunno:

I'm just glad we got who we wanted!

I will defend Kolb here. I went to one web site that was rating the QB's based on starts and completion percentage. Kolb's name was not there. When I went to get his stats...He was the #1 QB based on that web sites criteria. That web site was biased toward B. Quinn. Beck would have graded out better than Quinn too, if I am correct.

Kolb was my choice, but I am happy with Beck, and if we had gotten Quinn I would be happy too, but as I said I had Kolb over Quinn.

If we got lucky, it really bothers me that we took that big a chance filling the QB position. I assume maybe we liked Beck better than the other second tier Qb's but don't think we had him rated that much higher than the other guys than some on this board would believe. The front office acted like they thought he would be gone and it was quite possible so you have to assume that the original targets were Kolb, Edwards or Stanton. As for the Beck above Quinn, we will never really know. I think they really liked Guinn and did not see Quinn as that much better than the second tier of Qb's. This idea also that we had some kind of ingenious smoke screen makes no sense because nobody was taking Guinn before us and its doubtful anybody wanted him so bad that they would trade above us. Houston had already traded down. Also for the love of God how does Randy Mueller not know the age of his Qb he studied so damn much lol.

Edwards and Stanton were both on the boards when the Dolphins drafted and didn't choose either. They tried to move up with Chicago or Oakland for Beck because they were worried about Detroit taking him.

The smoke screen worked so well that almost everyone fell for it, especially the fans and media.

What does Beck's age have to do with anything. He's more mature than most rookie QBs and so what if he's only here 7-8 years instead of 10.

I guess you did not understand my post or maybe I did not make my point clear enough.

I was saying that since we tried to trade up we felt that Beck or whomever we were looking at possibly Kolb would not be there at our pick. We failed to move up so when we took Guinn we probably were thinking there was a great possibility of Beck or whoever we were drafting not being there. I mentioned Staton or Edwards since they might have been our original targets thinking Beck or Kolb or both would have been gone.

As for the smokescreen, who was going to trade up to get Guinn before our pick? The answer is and was nobody, so big deal everyone thought that a team that has never drafted Qb's and has been mediocre at QB for a while was drafting the second best QB in the draft instead of a punt returner and very raw WR who happens to be be very fast. I really dont think we fooled anybody because alot of people thought we were going to take Guinn before Quinn fell. We had no clue that Quinn was going to fall this far so if we wanted to do a smokescreen why not a player that was projected to be there at our pick. Alot of people on this board were talking about us taking Guinn and of course everybody talked crap to them, some of the same people that all of a sudden love the pick. Not an ingenious plan by any means because it got us nothing we were not going to get in the first place. We worked Guinn out quite a few times so it was no secret we liked Guinn.

As for my age comment I was referring to the press conferance where Muller said the incorrect age for Beck that is all. Who knows on age and all, people were calling Mc Nair washed up at 33 so its pretty conceivable that Beck might only be our starting Qb for 5 years.

To be honest we will never know the truth on this scenario because no GM or coach admit they made a mistake or say that a player was thier second or third choice. Its always GM speak that we got the player we targeted all along especially with Qb's. Name one time that a team said that the Qb they drafted was not thier target. San Diego did not say well we really wanted Manning but we are quite pleased with Ryan Leaf. The same with Phillip Rivers, did they say we really wanted Manning but he would not play for us so we will settle for Rivers.
