Where is the reset button?
I was thinking today about the wide-out situation. We all can agree we don't have a true number one or even a true number 2. Bess has good hands but the guy is too small to go one on one with a corner and is best used in the slot or on square outs or slants. Camarillo is all but non existent but will never be more than a number 3 again imo. Ginn is ginn and besides Bess, Hartline is the only other guy I think with some upside...actually probably the most true wideout upside. This thread isn't about comparing the guys. We have rehashed that dead horse argument forever.
However, while many of them do lack the size or speed or "body dimension" that would make them a true number one, they still are in the NFL. So what gives. Then it dawned on me. When was the last time you saw a guy on our team catch the ball and take it 20 yards up field. Ok so the ted ginn bomb against the jets. Anyone else? crickets....
So I went to look at YAC (yards after catch for the newbs) and sure enough it is a pretty SAD state of affairs. To be blunt, ricky williams has the most YAC on our team and only 189 yards. That is PATHETIC. Now to be fair, running backs generally have large YAC because they get swing passes and what not and basically get the ball near the line of scrimmage and take off. However to show you the difference, Andre Johnson has 311 YAC yards on 63 catches. Bess has 49 catches but only 188 in yac. Now we know he doesn't go deep because he is slow and short, however if you look at other teams around the league in terms of YAC, you will see that the majority of first team players on each team all have over 100 yards in YAC and some have 2-3 hundred for multiple players.
What does that tell me, nothing really that we haven't already known but our wide-outs are not play makers at all. Sure the guys running slants and curls for 7-10 yards on each play works to a point but the margin of error for the offense is little to none. End up 3rd and 8 or more and while I haven't looked at that stat, we have to be pretty much screwed.
I think we can agree it isn't always the catching issue with the majority of our guys but rather the inability to separate and get some YAC. Our current guys just aren't big enough or fast enough and it shows (ginn is a vagina so while being fast enough, he is just ted ginn...enough said if you want to split hairs). Now some of this is attributed to the offense, I will concede that. Other teams such as the bengals don't have much yac, but they like us are a run first team.
