Here's the real scoop on Manuel Wright.

I'll always be the first to admit when I'm wrong... and in this case I was NOT. The information I gave you guys came right after his workout when some people were still saying that he would be taken in the first couple of rounds. I knew the Dolphins saw him as a mid-to-late pick, and at that time who would have thought he'd fall this far?

That said, I think the Dolphins did what several of the other teams would have done if they'd gotten the chance in the 5th round... Draft a talented player with a questionable work ethic for very little risk. If you look at how this thing played out I was right on the money. When a team waits 5 rounds to select a guy it means he wasn't terribly important to them and they were more than willing to let him get away. You guys heard it here first...and you're welcome.;)

I have to say I took your analysis in exactly the way you indicate you meant it to be taken. Never did you say anything like Wright was unfit to get a shot in the league. Honestly, the people I'm most curious about in this thread are the ones who seemed hesitant to take Wright in any round. I wonder how they feel about this pick.
 
It was a good move by Saban. There's not going to be any in-between with this kid. He either matures and becomes a great player, or he'll be out of the league in 2 years and it only costs the Fins a 5th round pick.

I hear what you're saying Brett, but I was responding to the idea that the Dolphins weren't interested. Well, obviously they were somewhat interested. That said, your analysis was spot on.

Just to stick up for Brett, he did say that he would be shocked if we took him before the 4th round... which was correct. I also thought a team would take him in the 3rd or 4th so for him to say we were not interested is correct.

Based on the value he was getting, around a 3rd round pick hype, we were not interested in shelling out a 3rd for him. However in the 5th round, I think he might be a steal.
 
I appreciate Brett giving us his insite. Saban probably didn't think he'd be available in the 5th round and probably put a proxy bid in for him just in case he fell. Well, he fell. If the Dolphins were really interested, they'd probably paid a 3rd or 4th rounder for him. Paying the lower of their 5th round picks was a steal.
 
But if they WEREN'T interested, they wouldn't have put in a bid at all.

But that's fine. I'm not going to beat a dead horse. It's a great pick, and everybody's happy.

If come draft time they aren't impressed or still don't know how good he will be, the a NT with a high pick is probably needed.

You know that Traylor isnt gonna last too long So we shoul still get a DT regardless of Wright's performance.
 
I think its pretty obvious that the Phins remained interested all along. If you'd use a pick on the guy, you're interested. There were a lot of teams that weren't interested in Wright AND did not bother to toss in a 5th round pick for him. You can't act like we're no different from any of them. We were the highest bidder. We were the team willing to pay the most for Manuel Wright's services. No team was willing to pay a higher price than Miami for Manuel Wright.

To try and pretend that Miami still wasn't interested in him even though we gave a 5th round pick for him, the idea that we just nonchalantly tossed out the pick even though we concluded he was a turd just because the value was there, that is absurd to me.

I went on record with an article stating that Miami should take a guarded approach to him. I said some glowing things about him, and then proceeded to rip him for like 3 pages of material. The fact that he ended up in Miami anyway despite me ripping him, I've got to take my licks on that. Just like Mr. Tessler here has to take his licks for saying the Dolphins left his workout early because they were not interested. It is FAR more likely that the Dolphins left his workout early because they had enough information, and because it could have an effect on other teams' willingness to draft Wright. Remember, Miami was the market maker on this one, being the most interested team among the teams guaranteed to pick in the top third of the supplemental draft. Miami walking out of his workout early in disgust as he showed up out of shape and worked poorly would possibly convince teams that were going to pay Par+1 for Wright in order to jump ahead of Miami, that Miami is no longer a threat.

Bottom line, at his workout a lot of us turned our head in disgust at Wright, but Miami did not.
