Herm Edwards: 'Start Tannehill now'

Having better QB play will help other players on the offense develop. Putting Tannehill in could actually hinder his development. At least thats the way I see it.

Some QBs are ready in the first year, RT is not. Draft status or potential shouldnt be the determining factor either.
 
Is sitting a a rookie a year to learn a system he has already played in better than getting him real NFL game experience? I believed from the very beginning if we spend the #8 pick on a QB he should be our #1 from the start.
 
And thats why herm edwards is not coaching anymore. Hey look I love the Ryan Tannehill I think he has tremendous upside and is very dynamic with his running ability and arm strength but the dude is RAW, let him sit for a year and learn behind a few veterans and soak everything in, no need to rush the kid he is only 24.

There's nothing like game action, so there will be struggles for any and every QB when he starts playing in the NFL. But some struggles are obstacles to overcome, and some struggles can appear to be impossible to overcome. We don't have Brett Favre, but whether or not Favre was there, Rodgers wasn't ready to start as a rookie. Some QB's come out more polished than others. People develop at different rates. I'd say that Rodgers, over the past few seasons, has played the position as well as anyone I've ever seen.

This all boils down to what the staff feels is in Tannehill's best long-term interest. It's a person-to-person issue. Aaron Rodgers didn't start his NFL career nearly as quickly as Matt Ryan. Hell, you can argue that over his first two seasons, he struggled more than Chad Henne. Sometimes you get P. Manning, and you put him in and let him figure out everything on the fly. Sometimes you get A. Rodgers, and you let him learn at different pace. The important thing is the end result.
 
In Joe Philbin we have appointed a Head Coach who knows something about developing a high potential QB with Aaron Rodgers. I say that we leave it to him to determine when Tannehill is ready to be thrown in the deep end.
 
Herm didn't say anything incorrect. Discredit the man all you want but he's right on the money in this case. Matt Moore and Garrard are garbage, if Tanny can't outshine them then he sucks anyway, which is what i thought all along. Give the kid the keys to the kingdom and if he succeeds in showing a lot of promise, GREAT! If he fails, at least we can cut our losses on a loser early.
Matt Moore sucks, Garrard is finished, and we have NO WEAPONS. Get over it people, we aren't going anywhere this year, and I want to see what the kid can do.
 
Worst so-called expert in football. Never says anything worth while. Just talking points like a politician. Keeps him ememployed
 
When you hire a new employee for the express purpose of replacing a current employee so as to upgrade the position, and you essentially ask him to observe and hopefully absorb and learn from the experience you are usually inviting failure. Rogers, behind and learning from Favre makes sense. Tannehill behind and learning from our two other current quarterbacks, not so much sense.
 
there's several good reasons why Mr Edwards is no longer on the sidelines… this is obviously one of them.

Here is the thing: Edwards now has a cushy job at ESPN. He has the luxury to comfortably say another team should play a rookie quarterback when Tannehill clearly is not ready. If Edwards were still head coach of the New York Jets or Kansas City Chiefs, would he play Tannehill, or any rookie who was too green? Probably not.

In fact, Edwards had a chance to play Brodie Croyle his rookie year over veteran Damon Huard, and Edwards wisely chose Huard and won nine games that year. Croyle didn't start his first game until Year 2. Edwards also had a young Chad Pennington in New York and Pennington didn't crack Edwards' starting lineup until Year 3.

Edwards coined the phrase, "Hello! You play to win the game!" Miami going with Tannehill right now would not give the Dolphins the best chance to win in Week 1.

for once Walker provides some sense in the matter, as he said, easy for Herm to say a two time fired coach now sitting comfy getting paid im sure some absurd salary to give his opinion about teams players he has never coached

You point is well taken...however, Brodie Croyle wasn't taken 8th overall.


Still, I'm kinda with Herm on this one. Especially with a draft with Barkley, Thomas, Bray, Wilson among others, I would make it a priority to see Tannehill in the gauntlet for a series of games resulting some game film on him for other coaches. I want to see if Tannehill can still perform promisingly even with a scouting report on him.


He doesn't have to be Peyton Manning out there, but the article is correct. We're ultimately going nowhere fast with Moore, or Garrard. Both are on 1 yr deals, and I doubt either is brought back. I want to see Tannehill give me reasons to feel good about 2013 and beyond.


Or else, we're right back where we were in 2009 with Chad Henne without being sure he was the guy. Gotta let the pups play in the dogs pin sometime...
