I repeatedly hear Chris Grier saying this to the media in regard to our impending FAs, particularly Vernon and Miller. Is this just his way of giving a non-answer to the media?

What the hell does that even mean, "he earned the right to be a free agent"? It sounds like he is saying they've earned the right to test the market.... Which would be a pretty dumb line of thought if you actually cared to retain anyone.

Looking more and more like Vernon will hit the market and Miller will be re-signed... but again, Grier says they've both "earned the right to be a free agent". :rolleyes2:

Probably means Miller thinks he's worth more than Miami thinks he is.

I have every confidence based on their past laurels that Messrs Grier and Tannenbaum will skillfully act to retain our best FAs - NOT!

They said the same about Matthews and Shelby. He earned the right to be a free agent is code for we ain't telling you ****.

It means these guys performed, and honoree their rookie contracts now they want to make money, but please do not tag them making it prohibitive for other teams to offer them compenation. It means they don't want to be tagged.

Just means, "yeah we like him but were not going to pay them right now, let's see the market first."

Wildbill is correct, again. A number of the GMs are also using the expression, as well. It is a direct message to the players and their agents it's saying that we show some respect to assess their market value.
It's all about the money in a negotiation.

Ahh, I see. Makes sense. thanks for clearing that up

The player has earned the right to test their market value. Players/Agents want to get paid.

Play for us, play WELL for us, and you'll get paid. If not by us, than by someone. Here is our #, see what's out there and we'll chat again. Keeps the lines of communication open with the player. No animosity. Progressive organization.
