I'm liking hickey's draft class so far. it looks as though he's found several guys with starters potential in on draft.

But looking at other players on the team.. we have to give a little credit to ole Jeffy boy, no? I know there are moves he made that didn't pan out but I think some of the issues were coaching related.

2013
Jamar Taylor - vying for a starting spot

Will Davis - Vying for a starting spot

Dallas Thomas - Seems to be penciled in as the starting RG

Jenkins - Looks to be a solid backup

Dion Simms - Seems to be a pretty good backup with starters potential

Mike Gillislee - ?? not sure what he'll be

Kaleb Sturgis - Starter

Don Jones - Solid special teamer not sure if he'll make the squad

Micheal Thomas - FA signing - seems to be a lock for a roster spot

2012 -

Tannyhill - Looks to be coming around with Fracnshise QB potential - jury still out though

Martin - Disaster here - but I'm waiting to see how he fairs in SF. if he makes the team there, that would lead me to believe the locker room and coaching issues had something to do with his performance

O. Vernon - Soon to be probowler

M. Egnew - Thumbs down so far. Really looking to see what he does tomorrow in lazors offense. This will be his last shot.

L Miller - This is his make or break year. Jury still out. anxious to see him in Lazors offense

R. Matthews - Seems to be a pretty damn good WR found in the 7th round.

Maybe, but his handling of the offensive line and LB's was pitiful. The fact he never signed McKinnie the offseason and ended up giving up a pick for him is laughable especially when it's been said they knew Martin had emotional issues and Philbin didn't think Martin could handle LT. The way Hickey has handled the Center spot speaks volumes about him as a GM in my opinion. It was a proactive move that for the time being has stabilized the line until the pro bowl center returns. Ireland would have waited to see our backup center struggle then signed Satele. The LB swap made no sense either especially considering it is now the weakest link of the entire team. The contracts he gave to Wheeler and Ellerbee are ridiculous. Philip Wheeler must laugh himself to sleep at night.

I don't buy that Philbin felt MArtin could not play LT and still played him there. Philbin was not just a guy standing around as Ireland filled out the starting lineup.

What were his alternatives? I think he would have needed his GM to bring someone in.

Jeff Ireland was a bad general manager. Every GM hits on some players. However, to laud him for hitting on a few guys who are "maybe starter material" on a damn 8-8 football team is absolutely laughable.

Let's review the Ireland record:

1. Kept drafting injured players.
2. Kept squandering 2nd and 3rd round picks.
3. Kept bringing in headcases / literal retards (Vontae) the coaches couldn't work with.
4. Had no idea how to construct a roster and thus every year at least one unit was a complete disaster.
5. Overspent on BAD free agent acquisitions.

So yeah, he did a good job of bringing in Brent Grimes for a one year tryout, and Olivier Vernon looks like he was a pretty good acquisition. And I am a believer that Ryan Tannehill is our QB for the next decade. But on the whole, his record was terrible.

The only good thing I will say about Jeff is that I think he left us in MUCH better shape at QB than he found us. But even with that, how about the story from Gil Brandt that Ireland had ZERO interest in Ryan Tannehill until Brandt, Joe Philbin, and Mike Sherman told him they thought the kid had the goods?

So yeah, Jeff Ireland sucked.

What were his alternatives? I think he would have needed his GM to bring someone in.

I just don't buy that Philbin was just there as Ireland said this guy is good enough to play LT. That's pretty unheard of. We didn't have a LT and Jeff did try to resign Long.
Im pretty sure the reality of the matter is that the coaches felt pretty good about Martin at LT so that's why he played there.

Jeff Ireland sucks! I don't miss his sorry injured player drafting ass! Any good he did for this team is far outweighed by the bad. His best moves were shot in the dark longshots in Grimes and Wake that is attributed more to a roll of the dice than genius. I am so glad that dude is gone! I also think that there is less turmoil in the front office now that he is gone!

Jeff Ireland is that you!? Com'on buddy. We all appreciate what you did for us. Yeah Olivier Vernon blah blah pro bowl blah blah... Let's go Jeff time to move on. Hickeys our man now and you just fell short in the war room. That's nothing to be ashamed about. Lots of guys have performance issues in the war room.

I'm pretty sure Philbin wanted to trade for Brandon Albert last year...at least that's what the rumor was. I think the coaching staff was handcuffs with players that didn't fit the scheme on both sides of the ball.

Jordan doesn't fit their scheme but supposedly that's who the coaches wanted. If Philbin had no say in who his starters were than he is the weakest coach in the NFL and should just quit

its not like jiffy worked as a loaner.philbin and coaches worked collaboratively with irish. the same with hickey. they just have final say.

I agree with all of this.

Philbin had say in who starts but if they give you Lincoln logs and tell you build with Legos how do you make it work?

Most GMs do a lot of politicking for players they are convinced will be good. They do their fair share of convincing coaches this is the guy you want. After all, their are professional scouts and should know more than the coaches. If you think Philbin, Coyle and Lazor were scouting all the small school guys we drafted then they must have more hours in a day than the rest of the world. Hickey had to convince the coaches these are the guys we need. Time will tell.

Then he is just a weak inddiviual if he is coaching and has no say at all. GM job is to build a team but I doubt Gms do this in a vacuum. I mean people agree that other people influenced Tannehill and Jordan pick but think no influence was there anywhere else. Makes no sense.
