Hickey and the 2014 offseason

Although I disagree with some of the moves made this offseason (Finnegan signing and not trading down in 1st round), HIckey has provided his coaching staff with the players they want. This is in contrast to Jeff Ireland's 1st round pick last year, where he drafted BPA but a player who best projected to a 3-4 scheme.

Hickey in contract reached and drafted the best pass-blocking RT not called Jake Matthews.

There is no coincidence that Albert who was signed to play LT, was the best pass-blocking OT available in FA. Sticking with the offensive line, Billy Turner is an explosive OT who did not allow a sack 2013.

Joe Philbin has always seemed to prefer physical slot receivers and Jarvis Landry is ideal for that role. Although lacking top end speed, he is an excellent route runner with excellent hands. He is phyical and tough over the middle and was a favourite of mine before draft.

Matt Hazel again is a very good route runner with excellent hands. There is an obvious trend where Hickey has doubled up in draft.

Walt Aikens is a good tackling corner who is very competetive and translates best to zone scheme. Much like Finnegan & Delmas there is an obvious attitude change in secondary.

The mere fact that he drafted 5 team captains goes in line with what we heared about Philbin and Hickey wanting high character players.

IMO Hickey has gone need in this draft. Maybe because he knows he is tied to Philbin and this year is critical or maybe he is drafting as a GM should, providing his coaching staff with the player type they request.

Philbin now has his pass orientated offense. Benton has a mobile O'line. Coyle now has a physical secondary best suited to zone concepts. No excuses 2014 Mr Philbin.

I agree with everything you wrote, all the way down to the Finnigan signing and no trade down in round 1. At this moment I am very luke warm regarding Philbin. He is very lucky to be back this year after the collapse at the end of last season. All the o-linemen nonsense was going on right under his nose and he was oblivious and clueless. He has zero charisma and the team came out flat a bunch of times last year even to the point of losing to winless Tampa Bay on Monday night. He also basically kicked guys off the team that he didn't personally like who went on to star elsewhere. He is rigid as they come and he's not too likable imo. He screwed up on so many levels it makes you wonder what does a guy have to do to get fired around here! But, at the end of the day I'm a Dolphin fan so I'll root for a great season complete with a playoff run. If that doesn't happen we need a new coach.

Really liking what Hickey has done so far. When was the last time we had this type of depth at the WR position? We may have to keep a really good player on the bench, and lets be honest Hartline is not the greatest number 2 in the league but I think he would be in the running for the best number 4 in the league. Same goes for CB, we could have 4 really good players on the roster at the position. We could have 3 really good DEs. We're not amazing at any of those units but we're above average at them and we have depth. Its a far cry from 2011 to say the least.

The funny thing is o-line is still probably the weakest unit on the team (though linebacker has quickly caught up) even with the HUGE upgrades. Unless something catastrophic happens I don't see any way this team goes worse than 8-8.

I do agree with you. Philbin is way too rigid for today's nfl. I hope he has learned from last year and hopefully the changes made will push us forward. What worries me is that both the jets and bills seem to be better this year.

The Jets are ****ed, I mean sure they're good enough to win 8 games and play spoiler for other mediocre teams but that team is just treading water at this point, at best. I have the Bills and Dolphins about equal and on the verge of turning the corner with promising young QBs, Manuel impressed me when healthy and the Bills GM really seems to have his **** together. I give the Dolphins the slight edge just because Tannehill is a year more experienced but I won't be shocked at all if the Bills edge us out and get in via the wildcard.

Let's take a look back and see the off-season as a whole up to this point.
Biggest change will be O-line. Gone are: Martin, Incognito, McKinney, Clabo and Jerry. In now are: Albert, Smith, Fox, James and Turner. How much improvement do you see here?
QB-same
RB-Moreno brought in
WR-Added a bunch of second tier guys and two draft picks
TE-Same
Special Teams-Same
DL-Gone is Solia and in is Mitchell
LB-Same
DB-Gone are Patterson, Carrol and Clemons. In are Finnegan and Delmas.
So, how do you grade the whole offseason up to this point?

Worst thing is I love Mike McCoy. With the NFL all now changing to a pass orientated offense and all looking for lighter quicker lineman, I would love an OC to convert to a power run game and work RT off that with play action and bootlegs. If you look at this draft and see the amount of quality run blockers who fell in this draft is unreal.

Gabe Jackson, Marcus Martin, David Yankey, Morgan Moses, Cyril Richardson & Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff.

Grabbing a couple of these with Carlos Hyde, together with someone like Mike McCoy would be ideal.

I see your point and I do agree with you, but also feel Hickey hasn't out his own stamp on things. He has listened to the coaches and has got what fits their needs.

Whether you like what Hickey did or whether you feel like he and Philbin are going to be here long term, you can't deny that Hickey had a better understanding of what kind of players Philbin and his staff wanted (or at least was more willing to draft players that the staff wanted).

Whether you like all the moves or not, the big thing to me was for Hickey not to royally screw up anything, and to me he didn't (there were a few things I'd have done differently but nothing really pissed me off).

This is who I think the starters will be.
QB: Tannehill
RB: Moreno
HB/TE: Clay
LT: Albert
LG: Turner
C: Pouncey
RG: Smith
RT: James
TE: Lynch
WR: Wallace
WR: Hartline

RDE: Wake
RDT: Starks
LDT: Odrick
LDE: Vernon
WLB: Misi
MLB: Tripp
SLB: Ellerbe
RCB: Taylor
LCB: Grimes
FS: Jones
SS: Delmas

4 rookie starters.....no chance.

IMO Dion Sims will play more than Lynch.

Dallas Thomas will play OG with Shelley Smith.

James will start and I think we will have same 3 LB's sadly.

The offensive line, on paper, goes from a huge weakness to a possible strength. That was a key to the offseason and had to be the main focus. In that regard, can't really argue much with what Hickey has done. Albert is one of the best pass blocking LT's in the game. James" forte is pass blocking. The two projected guards, Turner and Smith, are physical run blockers. Turner is also considered an excellent pass blocker. Absolutely love that pick.

Although, I would have gone in a different direction with some of the draft picks, it seems like a solid group.

Your right on with philbin.i don't see this team going anywhere with him at the helm.

This is the 3rd time i read insight claiming Hickey is in an 1 year prove it situation. Those of you who believe this better think again. I tell you for your own good, so that you dont punch through a freagin wall if Ross cleans house without wiping down Hickey and you all have another conniption about the way a house should get cleaned.

Only an absolute Cameron catastrophe will see Hickey out next year. Get used to that idea, boys. For your own sake.

Yeah as long as the team is in the hunt into week 16 or whatever I don't see anybody getting fired, I doubt Lazor and the positional coaches come here if they are under the impression its playoffs or bust for the staff. Two more years to prove it for Philbin, Tannehill and Hickey seems fair to me.

I think Hickey's done some intriguing things. He hasn't done too little or too much, but has he done enough? That's the question. I like him. I don't like Philbin though which puts Hickey and the team in a really tricky position.
