Here is a summary of what was said in yesterday's three hour Sirius NFL Radio broadcast. I jotted down notes during the whole thing because to be honest, I want to hear what Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan say since all we hear every day seems to be the local guys. Ryan and Kirwan actually know what they're seeing and know what they're talking about, and IMO it's good to get their eyes at camp and see what they think. But, there were also some good interviews with Pennington, Porter, Jason Taylor, Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland.

I didn't get to jot notes during the Porter and Pennington interviews.

Pat Kirwan...

1. Really impressed with Chad Henne. The Dolphins have a buzzer that goes off 3 seconds after the snap to let you know that if the ball isn't out of your hands, you're sacked. Kirwan said he was so impressed how Henne got the ball off to his target he counted 15 times in a row before the buzzer. Called him a "smooth rhythm passer" (which is funny, because that's not what he was like at Michigan).

2. Pat White. From what he saw when the good is good, then the bad is bad, he seems not to get rattled at all.

3. Knew Patrick Turner from the day he went to USC, recruited out of high school. Didn't like how he was compared with other big USC receivers before him, this is a guy that gets into and out of his breaks like a small guy.

4. Dolphins are a good football team, not going to beat themselves, built that way, won't tolerate mental mistakes. When you watch them practice they're significantly more "greased". Not many guys out of shape.

5. Pennington continually underrated. Co-MVP. Runner-up for MVP.

6. This is not the Jason Taylor that played in Washington, you can see that, like that he's back in a 3-4 defense.

7. Cameron Wake got broken like an accordion by Jake Long on one play, trying to turn the corner on him. According to guys around Miami, Wake gets up and keeps going at it. Kirwan says he likes him but he is a guy you have to scheme him in, he doesn't think he wins straight up against NFL tackles.

8. Can see Jason Taylor going to a stand up 5-technique, with Wake outside of him, and that will present real problems, sees reasons to put all three pass rushers (Porter, Taylor, Wake) on the field at the same time, really likes the idea.

9. Saw Patrick Turner with the 1's on some plays. He sees Turner as a guy that comes in the game because of where you are on the field. You get to the 30 yard line and he wants a tall, vertical guy. He really likes him.

10. Saw Hartline catch a skinny post, thinks he was underused at Ohio State.

11. Thinks it will be 5 WRs, not 6, because they like the two-TE sets in Miami. Says he knows exactly who those five are (implying London is not one of them).

12. Run and shoot offense good for Davone Bess. Run and catch a TON of balls in that offense. Bess should be the #2.

13. Bess is quick, not fast. It's one thing to be in the slot, working the underneath. But when you're in the 2-WR sets, running vertical.Davone just looked OK. Not great. Bess will get more reps than Camarillo, but he expects Cam to play a lot.

14. The Dolphins are training Pat White as a #3 QB. That makes it really hard to activate him on gameday. Hard to activate him just for Wildcat, they can hurt you with Wildcat without him.

15. Caller says about the Dolphins putting the 3 second buzzer on Pat White, how that's not Pat White's game. Kirwan interjects, "his game doesn't translate to the NFL, he's going to have to learn the NFL game."

16. Pushed further, asked about a Slash role, Kirwan says beating the Syracuse defense and the Louisville defense, is not the Patriots defense. In order to get the defense worried about the other stuff, you have to learn to throw it.

17. Jason Taylor will be the starter. No hesitation in the answer.

18. Thinks Bill Parcells understands Chad Pennington real well, knows that Pennington is driven by the sort of slighting that some perceive announcing that Chad Henne will be Pennington's successor.

19. Didn't know that Chad Henne was going to look as good as he did. It's not a competition, though. Everyone knows Pennington is their QB.

20. Kirwan watched Vontae today, doesn't know about these rumors that Vontae has not been so hot. Sean Smith appears to be ahead of him right now, "but that's classic Bill Parcells competition." Bet on Vontae as nickel CB, Kirwan likes him there.

21. Asked if the Dolphins would have taken Ramses Barden if on the board, and to compare the two, Kirwan says he likes both, but the ability of the big tall Patrick Turner with short legs getting into and out of breaks, considering he has soft hands, he'd take the guy that came out of USC.

22. Ricky showed them a lot of speed when he turned a corner and blew by Yeremiah Bell, he still has it.

23. Is Reggie Torbor good enough to push the starters? Tim Ryan says absolutely.

24. Kirwan doesn't think Ronnie or Ricky will be on top of the other, they'll share about equally.

25. Kirwan doesn't think the depth at Guard is great. Still a question area, has to be proven on the field. Pay attention Monday night. Pay attention to #76, compare it to #61. Don't look at the names.

26. Tom Brady changes everything, but this is not a team that will back down to the Patriots, and he sees 9 or 10 wins as very attainable.

27. Compare the Patriots pass rush to the Dolphins pass rush, no comparison. Joey Porter, and he thinks Jason Taylor is going to be really good, Dolphins have a far better pass rush and they should be able to rush Brady.

28. (cut out for about 5 or 10 minutes)

29. Tim Ryan says Kendall Langford, light really went on for him last year. Kirwan agreed.

30. Loves watching Jason Taylor cover a wheel route, can't see the receiver behind him, so tall.

31. Bill Parcells once fired him to bring in his own guys, but they are better friends for it. Kirwan understood.

32. Whoa, Tim Ryan says he thinks Jason Allen is having his best training camp since becoming a Dolphin. Guys around the locker room told him the same.

33. He thinks Miami has the jokers to do what the Giants did against Brady in the Super Bowl.

34. Kirwan can't wait to see how people pressure Tom, after that Giants Super Bowl.

35. Reiterated that Sean Smith is ahead of Vontae Davis right now but he doesn't know if things will end up that way.

36. Expressed a real discomfort with Miami having two "buzz" safeties as he calls them, guys that are typically more suited to strong safety.

Jeff Ireland's interview.

1. Joked that Chad Henne probably hears that 3 second buzzer in his sleep.

2. Have 6 or 7 guys competing at the WR for roster spots. Says 3 through 5 keeps changing.

3. Reiterated Pat Turner's body type, long upper body, short upper thighs, helps him to be quick in and out of breaks.

4. Really impressed that Ted Ginn has become a guy that is now quick in addition to being fast.

5. Needed to get a little more physical and consistent at Center, hence Jake Grove over Samson Satele.

6. Donald Thomas coming along slowly, everyone patient, Shawn Murphy developing well, nice competition between a number of guys at RG.

7. No special method for arriving at 53 man roster. How many plays can a guy play in a game. The more you can do, the better off you'll be.

8. Nickel CB can be just as important as your #2 CB on a lot of times. Nickel CB in 38 to 45% of the time.

9. Safety position is competitive, have about five guys that can play.

10. Sean Smith only played CB for two years at Utah but he's got quick feet for tall guy, runs well, very, very good ball skills.one of those guys that can be just a step behind the receiver but with such length, when his arms go up he can block out the sun.

11. On Starks/Merling. Moved them around a lot. McDaniel in the mix. Good battle. Didn't reveal anything.

12. On depth behind Ferguson. Tough position. Fact that they know Randy Starks can also play there is good. "But, this Paul Soliai." has done a nice job. Can't move him off the ball. Tone of voice sounded really impressed, not just talking in defaultspeak.

13. Asked who are the candidates for nickel and dime: Nate Jones. Eric Green. In "big nickel" they don't know who third safety will be, very competitive there. Strong competition. Rookies will figure in.

14. In a word, why are you better? Depth. Players have taken ownership of Sparano's message and philosophy.

Tony Sparano interview (missed beginning of it).

1. Matt Roth no update, day to day.

2. On Chad Henne and the buzzer, says Chad spent entire off season working, didn't take any time off. Still Pennington's team.

3. Been impressed with White. Been in the deep end of the pool a little with installs, whole playbook thrown at you. Taken 260 plays, getting better and better. One of the things they were most impressed with coming out was ability to throw deep down the field, and they've seen that in camp and OTAs.

4. Every day with Donald is one day at a time, getting more into it.

5. Murphy one of the players that has grown the most since last season.

6. On swing tackle.have some people bouncing around, Nate Garner, Andrew Gardner, Brandon Frye (as a G/T).

7. Talked about the WRs, seemed like he's got a group of top 5.Ginn/Bess/Cam, then the two young guys.

8. Ted Ginn has gotten a whole lot better since last year, and last year he got a lot better than the year before. Better on daggers, crossing, not afraid to catch ball in the middle of the field.

9. Likes the battle between Merling and Starks, he mixes them up in order to "start trouble" and he also likes Tony McDaniel.

10. Sean has done nice job in first huddle, Vontae has great closing speed and physical tackler.

11. Jason Allen has really had a nice training camp bouncing around a few places, Nate Jones is a steady player.

12. Every day out here is a learning experience for Wake, he has some good days. He has the best first step of the group of players out there (wow).

13. Worst place you can be is by the quarterback, so yeah Wake needs to develop counter moves.

Jason Taylor interview...

1. Being back in Miami is like riding a bike, knows everything, missed everyone, including Harvey Greene, lol.

2. Paying state income taxes wasn't fun. It snows up there. Commuting sucks.

3. Redskins were very good to him though.

4. Feels like he could play a few more years, and wants to.

5. Good to be back in a 3-4 defense. Prolongs your career. Back in DC, playing inside the TE, that's a man's world, had trouble, especially at 245 lbs.

6. For a long time he really focused on his run stopping as a weakness.

7. Haven't played a game for Tony yet and I already love him to death. Detail oriented, a little rough around the edges, a little different but great, leaves no stone unturned.

8. Have had some good guys with him, but he's been getting most of the attention and chips, and now Joey looks like he'll get that stuff, and he doesn't wish that on Joey, but...yes he does.

9. 5-Technique next to him is important, don't hear their name much but they're very important for what he does. Kendall Langford will be a great one, can see it on film.

10. For a lot of years they would play the Jets and just couldn't beat them, and Pennington was a big part of that. Great to play with him.

11. Have a good group of receivers, likes them.

12. Doesn't sound particularly optimistic about Ernest Wilford at TE, says he has to be his own kind of player.

13. Great that someone signed Vick and will let him get his life back on track.

14. Talks to Parcells, gives JT tips, jabs him about age but tells him about guys he's had that were dominant at his age.

15. He's about a 12 handicap in golf. Didn't shoot a 70 once this off season.

16. Zach doing well in KC, likes it, comfortable playing Mike backer again

I didn't jot anything down during Joey Porter's interview but the most interesting thing to me was how he said that Bill Parcells completely ignored him for the first couple of months, and he just didn't think he was a "Parcells guy" but since then they've developed a good relationship. He also seemed to think real highly of Cameron Wake and when Tim Ryan asked if he's got anything but the speed rush, and Joey said yeah he's got a lot of moves, but he doesn't want to give anything away or anything.

Amazing that some of the "national" writers seem to be more informed than some of our locals. Yea you Armando

while i liked it, it sounded almost suspiciously positive. nothing bad to say? hell, i'll take it.

It is what it is. They definitely had a lot more positive to say than negative. The optimism around the Dolphins facility is very infectious and it's obviously a well run program, so there's a lot to like.

Overall what I find funny is all of the headlines and all of the blogs, the stories written about that Friday AM practice...all pointed to Pat White and noted what a great day he had. Chad Henne has been getting torched by the locals lately. Yet Pat Kirwan goes to the same practice and sees the same players, and who does he like? Raves about Chad Henne. Loves him. Didn't expect to like him as much as he did, is what Kirwan said. Pat White? He seemed very so-so on White. The best thing he could say about him was that he seemed pretty unflappable when it came to making mistakes.

I find that VERY interesting, since I KNOW that Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan are excellent evaluators.

every statement i read, i remembered them talking about it. its like i heard the whole thing exactly like i did the first time. great write-up.

huh. that is interesting. i trust ryan and kirwan more than the 'locals' as well.

early in the broadcast, it really angered me that they talked about vick soo much. i remember listening to them at bills camp and there was little to no word on any other team. but the last couple of hours of the broadcast was good.

Tim and Pat also talked about the need to get a swing tackle. A veteran Offensive tackle who can back up both Jake Long and Vernon Carey in case of an injury.

The jason allen line was interesting. Also good to see white hit the long ball.

Hate to put any hope in Jason Allen, but I'll be really happy with him and for him if he's able to contribute this year. I'm sure he can't be too pleased with where he's been.

I'm not surprised at all to read that Wake has the best first step of anyone on our roster. When people were downplaying his ability, I kept mentioning that he's a rare athlete. You don't get someone at 260 with that explosiveness very often. He's in the perfect position to learn. And, from what I understand, he turned down bigger offers to play with the team that he thought would make him the best player. I won't at all be surprised to see him in the Pro Bowl in the future.

Monday cannot come soon enough (never thought I'd say that).

Great post, CK.

Great post, CK.

people forget that Wake is basically a rookie himself (no offense to any CFL fans)

It doesn't surprise me that Wake has the best first step.....this IS the guy with the second highest verticle jump in combine history (45 1/2")...

Lower body explosion is rare....elite even...

But I agree with Kirwan.....you can't beat NFL tackles consistantly with only that....and being past the quarterback is the worst place you can be......you have to have a counter....or two...

You have to be able to beat him from the waist up also....

An explosive first step is good for setting the tackle up.....get him to open up....then you can work him over....

Good post CK....these guys know what they're talking about.....Hell, I value the observations of some of the posters here more than the local writers....
