he runs hard but has no vision. it seems like he is putting his head down as soon as he gets to the line of scrimmage, and he isnt being patient. i hope he gets it together.

The book is out on him...he is what 240? Yet he hits the ground as soon as you touch him as if he were a 170lb WR. He has not picked up the slack at all.

Cut him some slack. He is the FOURTH running back on our depth chart. We lost Ronnie and Cobbs to injury. How many other teams do you think have a 4th rb with great field vision?

Who cares? He's a dive-bomber and a single-back blocker. His vision isn't that bad considering how hard he rocks on ST.

i would rather see Kory Sheets to be honest. No disrespect to Hilliard, we havent seen a whole lot from him but from what ive seen he needs work. He pretty much falls forward when he gets to the LOS. Then again i dont know what Sheets looks like but hes a faster, shiftier back who supposively is also pretty decent at catching too. I know Ricky gets 20+ carries and the backup will prob touch it only 5 times but i wouldnt mind seeing a fast explosive kid get the rock(if he is one). If were gonna pound the ball we might as well just use Lousaka Polite.

Not only does he not have vision, but he has absolutely no short burst quickness getup, and has absolutely no lateral ability to make anyone miss.

He has zero "go-stop-go" quickness. Hilliard is just a plodding battering ram, and that's it... All he is is a "plodder", and nothing more.

The good backs can make someone miss in the hole, then explode for a big gain after making someone miss.

Hilliard cannot make anyone miss at all. Hilliard is just another Polite running the ball.

Battering rams who have no other talent running the ball (don't get me wrong, I love Polite for his blocking and what he brings to the team)

And I agree with the prevous poster. I would much rather see Kory Sheets in there. A guy that actually has some talent running the ball, rather than just being a plodder... Plodders don't do well as running backs in this day and age.

Maybe before in the 50's, 60's and 70's, but not today... not in the current NFL.

Once Cobbs returns next offseason Hilliard will have to battle it out with Sheets in the preseason to remain on the ballclub. I think Sheets stays. Why? Because next season is Ricky Williams' last season with us and we need a speedy WC back to replace him.

Hilliard would be more of a bulldozing Ronnie Brown replacement, which I believe we will have under contract in 2010 (which I believe we will sign the CBA) and then re-sign him in 2011....with a 2011 RB corps of Ronnie Brown, Kory Sheets, and Pat Cobbs and of course Lousaka Polite as the FB.

So I expect us to keep 4 RBs next season again with the one FB.

Lex Hilliard has no blocking. With our o-line hurting the running game just hasn't been effective. Now I know Ricky turned 100 yards out today, but that was on a lot of carries with few of them being long ones. Nevertheless, he had enough 7-8 yard gains on sweeps and such to make up for the 1-2 yard gains where there wasn't any space at all to run.

The last two games Hilliard hasn't gotten many carries and the carries he has gotten there hasn't been anywhere to run. You can't judge a back by such a small sample size. I'm not having unrealistic expectations about Hilliards ability, but if there was a hole to hit at all he would have hit it hard and gotten something.

i think some of you are way off on Lex Hilliard, that guy is a solid down hill runner, he is just like almost every other back, he needs more carries to get into a groove or whatever. I bet if you gave that guy the ROCK 20-25 times a game, he would produce.

The more touches he gets the better he will get. I agree I would like to see this Sheets kid, especially returning punts. For the life of me I can't understand the loyalty to BEss on punt return, he almost lost another one today. Not to mention he just has not speed.

I am thinking that we might surprise everyone next draft and grab someone like cj spiller in the first. any thoughts

Agree about Sheets. I've seen him in a few college games and he indeed can run and catch that rock.

I'm not the biggest fan of Ricky catching passes bc to me I get nervous he's going to fumble it and he doesn't seem too confident catching it either (nothing to do with today's fumbles). But the guy can catch the ball. I obviously preferred Ronnie getting the ball thrown to him out of the backfield but that's a moot point.

That being said I think it would be interesting to have an explosive back like Sheets catching some short passes/screens bursting out of the backfield since that in my opinion isn't Ricky's strength. With the staff spreading out the offense more I think it would be beneficial to have that threat but I doubt we will see Sheets out there.

This is some random highlight video that gives you a good idea of Sheets (I think I posted this link back when we picked him up). A lot of Niner fans liked Sheets as the #2 over Coffee and the kid def. has talent. Towards the end of the video he lays down a juke from hell on a defender - a must see!

Sparano, Henning, and Co will decide to bust out Sheets in a playoff game, in a crucial 4 down situation, im just saying, LOL.

I don't doubt it, and that's actually one of the things I really admire about the coaching staff.

Idk. Someone with that much explosive talent should at least get a few looks even if it is returning on ST. I think the coaching staff makes great decisions at times, but one thing I don't like is how they seem to be hesitant to make personnel changes unless theirs an injury. I think it's safe to say our offense could use any slight edge so why not throw in some players to do so (Turner/Sheets)?

But what do I know I don't see those players in practice so maybe our players out there and doing a better job then the others could. But just look at how Sperry popped in and showed some talent.
