At the time each of these three coaches was on the market, the Miami Dolphins have had the fortunate distinction of employing THE premier coach available at that given time.

Pretty interesting I'd say...

Shula- yes

JJ- Not sure because I dont really remember back then (I mean I know he was great in Dallas, but he had an amazing team so im not 100% how much was actually him based on what he did here)

Saban- Definitly

We have a knack for getting our guy

I don't really view Saban as the premier coach.

DISCLAIMER: I am all for Sabana. I was for it from the begining.

Ok. But, I don't view him as a premier coach because he came from the college ranks. I know he did his stint as a coordinator. However, I don't think that is a enough to call him a "Premier Coach," at least not a premier pro coach. NOW! He did have a ton of promise and a ton of upside. He's kind of like Reggie Bush. A lot of hype i the draft, but can't be premier because he hasn't played a down yet.

I would think of a premier coach being more of a, "Cowher, Bellicheck, or Dungy." Names synonomouse with football. You could have asked a middle schooler during that year who Saban was and he would have given you the "trout" look.

Just my humble opinion.

I thought the same as you, but JJ turned out to be a toad instead of a prince. For the guy to stay only 4 yrs and not accomplish what he set out, and then to QUIT on us...no, not the premier guy in my book....He was a very poor talent evaluator and refused to adjust his system to the people he had.

Of course, the worst thing he did was to hand-pick Wanny as his successor, a coach with even less personnel picking ability than JJ.

Yes, he was a hot commodity at the time we hired him, but turned into cold potato soup very quickly...you could see the handwriting on the wall after his first season...

I like what saban is doing. but i still think Charlie Weis would have been a pretty good choice.

Good answer

Even though id prefer Saban to Charlie, not just because he is our coach, I thought the same before we hired anyone

Oh, I agree with you certainly. Saban was the best choice of the coaches and is definately working out. However, your description as a premier coach doesn't exactly work. Just because hes BPA doesnt make him premier.

I agree with that, but just in my opinion his history in college and as a coordinator makes his premier, just my opinion

*nods* Ah I see. Agreed then.

Charlie Weis wasnt available.. He signed with Notre Dame before th end of the NFL season..

Saban was THE best coach available. You could make a case for Romeo, but it was obvious that most Front Office people favored Saban.

Was Shula considered the top coach when we got him ? He hadn't done much with the Colts before coming to Miami.

We can't call Saban, a top of the line coach yet. he has only been here for 1 year, and we can all say he is turning this team around and building it the way it should have always been built.

Usually a superbowl, or a high winning % are the things that make coach's part of the premier group.

Oh, no, he hadn't done much:

2 league championships in 7 years
Finished 1st or 2nd in his divison 6 out of 7 years (his first year was the only miss) - twice in 1st, twice tied for best record, twice 2nd best record
Compiled record of 71-23-4

maybe wanny couldve righted the ship if given one more year rotflmfao
