Holy Regression Batman - Look At Some Of The Stats In This Article

If we’re still struggling in the same areas by week 8 or 9 I’ll be worried. New defensive schemes aren’t perfected overnight. The players need time in the system and Fangio needs time working with the players.

It is hard to describe how large of a scheme change it was to go from Flores/Boyer to Fangio.

It is pretty clear that we cannot consistently generate pressure with 3-4 rushers with Phillips out. It is also clear we have no real answer at ILB. Baker routinely takes himself out of plays vs the run. Long can be exploited in coverage.

These statements are a huge deal because they are the base requirements for Fangio’s defense to function. If you drop guys into zone coverage and your front gets no pressure, a good QB will find an open guy 99% of the time. Likewise, if your defensive front is essentially wide 9, your LBs have to have the ability to find the ball and stop the runner for minimal gain. It has been way too easy for offenses to abuse us in nickel and dime formations.

You can blame Fangio for everything, or you can look at our vet players like Chubb, Ogbah, Baker, Seiler, Wilkins, and Howard on high paying deals and expect more. There is a clear lack of execution on the defensive side of the ball. Coaching doesn’t mean much if you don’t perform the role you are given.
yes but that does not explain the regression issue. wilkins, long, baker. they were all good last year, now they all suck all of the sudden

Long played on another team. Wilkins has regressed. Baker has always sucked. Chubb was ineffective last year too.

There is no reason X. Howard should not cover their best receiver. Brandon Jones looks bad out there. Eli Apple > Kader Kohou

The personnel is not very good. I don't pay attention during the offseason. Apparently there was overboard hype based on some type of adjustments.

Where are the great players? Chubb has never been an around the corner guy. Holland doesn't have anywhere near the instincts to match the projections. Kohou types are very common. They look great when nothing is expected then all the weaknesses are front and center when much is expected.

I've detailed Raekwon Davis many times. IMO, when he is a starting defender you don't need to know anything else. How can there be high defense upside when you've got an interior guy with no agility or instincts?

Wilkins is a disappointment but not shocking. He relies on intensity. When it's not there he doesn't have rare skills to make plays upon standard effort level. The Giants guy Lawrence was there when we picked Wilkins. II would have taken Lawrence, as I posted following that draft. He is the bigger younger guy who was higher rated as a prep. Wilkins turns 28 soon.

I enjoyed the bully mode under Flores. The Dolphins hadn't been great at anything in so long. We were finally intimidating on defense, at least against overmatched foes. That Saints game was the pinnacle. Now we've shifted to bully mode on offense. The defense might be able to fake it in certain games.

My offseason thoughts were few. Centerpiece was that it's a promising team but the defense doesn't suggest championship caliber personnel, and can Tua put up the 40 or thereabouts in at least one playoff game that will evolve that way?

That was about it. I enjoy ignoring the offseason in favor of one or two big picture summaries like that.

Totally agree. Fangio’s scheme requires elite linebackers and pass rushers to be effective. Chubb has been invisible, Phillips has been hurt and Baker/Long have been horrible. When you don’t get consistent pressure up front your CBs get exposed. See Kohou. Phillips being out really hurt us vs the Bills. Gink has been the most consistent player on our D, needs more snaps IMO at ILB.

Regression implies they are doing the same thing worse than they did last year. This is an entirely different scheme. The front is playing different techniques. The LBs have different responsibilities. The DBs are playing more zone than man. What we are seeing is not regression, it is a lack of execution.

Wilkins was the “most NFL ready, safest IDL” pick in the 2019 draft, but he struggled his first two seasons. It really wasn’t until the height of our cover 0 scheme his 3rd year that Wilkins became a household name. I fully expected his numbers to drop off under Fangio. Particularly because tackles past the line of scrimmage are not a sustainable stat to judge IDL by. Also, he struggled playing inside his first 2 seasons and I questioned how good he’d be playing a lot of 1.5/2 technique.

If McDaniel gets the credit for turning our offense in to a juggernaut and making Tua realize his potential, then Fangio is solely to blame for our defense regressing.

He isnt making adjustments, scheming sacks, calling good plays, or blitzing. This is the plainest defense Ive ever seen.

This is easy to ascertain the problem, it’s the defensive scheme. Fangio better get his head out of his arse.
