hoops offseason do's and dont's for jeff ireland and joe philbin

I do think Miami is the only team that makes sense taking the chance on Flynn now with Philbin on board but man that will be one risky signing and make or break the Philbin era. It will say a lot about Flynn if the Dolphins don't make a strong push for him.

Flynn would be boom or bust but if there's one person who has the most insight on him it would be philbin. If we had McCoy as our coach and went after Flynn, I would definitely be more nervous as to whether he succeeded or failed. If philbin doesn't want flynn, then yes, it definitely speaks more of flynn

Agree with everything except for giving the starting job to Flynn right away... You're selling me on him and Im willing to buy, but I'd still make it a competition...

Hoops: Do you think Thomas can be a good back in a WC offense? Also, I am interested to hear what you think about Hartline's role in this type of O.

Yes. A WCO usually has a ZBS along with it. Thomas would be perfect in a ZBS because of his "ballerina feet" as Hoops likes to say. One cut and he's upfield. Hartline is tough to say. I'm still, as hoops probably is, under the impression he's a good 4th receiver, but a mediocre number 2. Pretty much any receiver can fit into any offense though, so finding a role for him shouldn't be a problem.

regarding thomas i don't see why not...anyone with feet like that at that size and is a make one cut and get north and south runner imo can have success in any offense...and if we spread the opposition out like the pack does it will create more natural running lanes etc...i don't know if we'll ever truly run to pass like the pack does to keep teams honest but i see no reason thomas cannot succeed...provided he kicks these constant hammy issues...this camp is gonna be a big one for d thomas

hartline has never done much for me as the #2 wr...i just don't think he beats man coverage enough...anyways...wco to me is more about rac and i don't think thats a strength of hartlines by any means...would i keep him going into this season??? sure i would but for me at least i'd like to see gates get more run this season...

when people bring up the name kendall wright that to me is a guy who fits the wco very well...crisp route runner head on a swivel ready to receive the ball at all times...catch the ball underneath and run after the catch...and also has the ability to just blow by guys with speed or beat them with quickness at the los...

as for what we have in house b marshall has that rac you look for...bess is more a beat you with short area quickness at the los guy who can separate for a time being out of his cuts etc but he's not a guy who's gonna give you much rac...he may beat the first guy but frankly his top end speed is quite lacking...he gets run down way too easy

Any signing of a young unproven QB is a risk but you have to roll the dice. At least we have seen Flynn perform well in this system and he can step in from day 1 as the starter.

Although Sanchez may not work out for the Jets,I applaud them for identifying him as their future and moving up to get him. Same for the Lions with Stafford. There was a lot of discussion if they should go the safe route but decided not to. They now have an elite QB in the making

First, you don't pay Flynn what they'll have to if he is not going to start in front of Moore. Second, Moore is a decent QB but Flynns ceiling looks to be a lot higher.

If Fleener runs a 4.5, does he get out of the 1st? Just don't see him there for Phins in the 2nd if he does.

i think there's gonna be a lot of buzz about him at the combine and with the success of these long length te's in pro football today and the fact that every time one of these undersized dbs goes to hit one down the seam but because of his height it ends up being helmet to helmet and 15 more yards guys like fleeners stock is gonna be very high...i don't know that top 10 is in play but i do think we could be talking about a top 20 pick...only thing about fleener for me is he comes off a little soft to me...i'd like to see more hand fight and physicality on balls over his head and use that big body to create separation...and a bit more toughness...this guys not gronkowski tough by any means...not sure he's jimmy graham tough even...he runs in the 4.5's BUZZ will be the word

If people are expecting Jordy Nelson type production from Hartline. Your in for a rude awakening. Nelson is a better WR than Hartline, and it's not even close

Marshall will have the Nelson type season, not Hartline.

That's not true. Only Shanahan and his pupil Kubiak use the ZBS with the WCO. Andy Reid and Mike McCarthy do not use the ZBS with the WCO. Mike Sherman didn't either and Sherman/McCarthy are where Philbin spent most of his NFL coaching career with...mostly McCarthy since Philbin was the OC for the last 5 years and put all the game plans together, did all the walk through and ran the meetings for the offense.

Correct Jordy is a helluva lot faster than you might think. Not a burner, but he's not slow.

Hartline I think could surprise people as he is a pretty good fit for the WCO himself

Hartline can run good routes which will help him but he loses too many battles one-on-one IMO. I can't remember him ever winning a jump ball against a DB.

I honestly can't remember him being in too many positions to win jump balls. What Hartline does do well is he puts himself in good positions where the defender can't get the ball.

jordy nelsons one of the strongest wrs in the game...guys fall off him all the time...no one will ever fall of brian hartline...hartlines routes are solid but once he does catch it barring a missed tackle on the sideline he's going straight down...i think he'll fit about like he has our current o but don't anyone even think about him becoming a jordy nelson like wr...not happening
