Tua time!
well well what what did i see in the first half especially when we found a running game and better protected our qb??? something i called for in a scoops during the bye week to jump start the run game and help the tackles especially in pass pro but really the protection period...
http://www.finheaven.com/showthread...lems-time-to-think-short-term-fixes&highlight=
the extra ot in will yeatman...why we didn't come out of the bye week with it is beyond me or even give it some use vs the patriots last week...yeatman was inactive for that one...this not something you put together package wise in a 2 day short work week this is obviously something they have been working on in practice for a little bit of time at least...and what a difference it made...almost 150 yards rushing in the first half vs a top 10 rush d...
that's not to say the protection didn't have some issues...on the first drive in a extra ot 6 protection incog and pouncey seemed to not be on the same page and cog expected help from pouncey on geno atkins and didn't get it...pouncey doubled the dt peco and geno blew into the backfield for a big loss sack essentially killing that opening drive...my thoughts are the last guy you want one on one is geno atkins so pouncey maybe blew it...
anyways take a look at will yeatmans work one on one vs michael johnson on that play his pass pro was exceptional...that guys slowly coming along and i for one think he's a part of our future...
nice job in the run game today by the backs and the oline...miller was pressing the hole and his speed and acceleration was apparent in the first half especially when we had the ball...daniel thomas was north and south and ran thru first contact...miller though is showing poor vision in the open field this is the 2nd time this year he's been in the clear pretty much for a long td and he chose the wrong path...had he taken the ball wide to the far side of the field once he pressed the issue down the middle with the blockers in front of him he walks in for 6...instead the trail defender catches up and swats down on the ball for a terrible take 6 points off the board fumble...he just pressed it too long
same old issues though in short yardage running the ball..this teams not good enough up front to be able to line up and the d knows what's coming and jam it down a teams throat...3rd and 1's or less have killed drives all season...they did it again today...even with the extra olineman on the field...
mike sherman is willing to run a qb sneak on first and goal at the like one yard line tanny jumps over the pile for 6 but he won't freaking run one on 3rd and the football length all season??? killing me...in ot we are moving the ball for the game winning points and he calls another bring the ball all the way back to the back handoff when we have a 6 ft 4 230 lb athlete qb he could just sneak for these conversions...had we lost that game in ot it would have been on the oc...that's just mind boggling
i liked the implementation of screens in the 5 man protects to try and neutralize pass rush pressure...they didn't really spring for much but every 5 man protect this team lines up in and in some cases they don't have much choice is a hold your breath adventure that the protection won't just cave in...
mayock said it best today off his miami tape study..."the qb has been getting killed...the pass pro has been awful"...nice to see we finally did some things to hide weaknesses...
caleb sturgis time for some competition in practice...you miss 36 yarders and be as inconsistent as you've been of late time for some heat...said it last week saying it again nut up or get lost...unacceptable
philbin made the right call in the first quarter to coming off the wake sack forced fumble 4th and 1 kick it...with how this run game looks in short yardage and the way this oc calls odd run plays anyways in those scenarios repeatedly and the fact that it was so early in the game you kick that ball and put points on the board...kicker just screwed it up
ryan tannehill wasn't asked to do much in the first half and didn't have the ball in the 3rd quarter...but he made some nice plays when he did get opportunities...
fake the wide stretch run bootleg back to the other side gets immediate pressure in his face off the clean to the ball lb harrison throws a dime to egnew for a nice gain...
pa blitz up the middle from the bengals there is immediate wide pressure on tannehills throwing arm he steps up beautifully daniel thomas picks up the blitzer and he throws a lazer to wallace on an intermediate in cutter and wallace does what he does best in space create chunk yardage after the catch...this play never happens if tannehill doesn't feel that wide pressure and step up cause clabos whooped by dunlap and he's got the dead to rights...he had a pocket to step up in and he did and he threw a beautiful rope
we worked a lot off pa in this one in the passing game brought on by a run game that opened things up and tannehill made the plays to be made...you protect this qb and you give him a run game and the time to read the coverage and field and he will shred you...
i loved the after scoring on the qb sneak tannehill stood up amidst the defenders and spiked that ball right in their face...awesome
got mike wallace involved vs some serious bail coverages with more down the field routes cause the protection was able to hold up and the routes had time to develop...finally...and he sliced em up
in the 4th quarter he saw a clean michael johnson on his backside and got the ball out to clay for a short gain in the middle of the field...that play doesn't look like much but the bengals caught us in a bad protection for that defense and they blitzed the lb up the middle mckinnie made the right call and took the inside defender and johnson was unimpeded to the qb if tannehill doesn't see that pre/post snap and get the ball out quick that's another backside hit likely forced fumble...instead it's a 6 yard gain...well done by mckinnie and tannehill both and clay for hooking up
1:18 left 1 time out remaining down 3 on the like 20 yard line gets sacked on a inside stunt sack where he never had a chance mind you we burn our time out and puts us in 2nd and 17 1:11 left throws a beautiful ball away from the coverage up in the air where only mathews can go get it for a critical 16 yard completion...
clocks ticking 3rd and 1 hits clay in the middle of the field for a 1st down ball thrown away from the lb coverage and leverage clay reads it right and sits down in the soft spot...
1st and 10 34 seconds acts like he's gonna spike it hits mike wallace for a clock stopping 4 yards...another great play by a developing qb and a much needed clock stoppage...
1st and 10 34 seconds left maybe the best ball all season...a dime over 2 deep man under coverage to hartline at the sideline...you kidding me that throw was rediculous...dropped in rigtht over the trail defender and in front of the safety...hot damn that's my qb!!! 20 yard gain fg range baby!!!
another dime to hartline in front of off coverage for a clock stoppage...inside the 26...
the next play i didn't like...not so much from the qb but the call...there's 20 seconds left it's 3rd and 4 any tackle in the field of play you got to run your kicker on the field unless you can line up and spike it...i don't know i guess if your qb has the iq to know that he can't throw the ball short of the sticks it's no big deal...i just know i was nervous given they couldn't spike it minus a conversion...tannehill does the right thing and throws it away vs taking a check down to the back underneath which the clock would have continue to run...
tie ball game ot ehh the one bad decision i saw all game...double clutches on an in cutter to hartline that was dicey with an inside defender on egnew looking right at it and maybe could have broke on...whew!!!
ahh yes 8 man front loved this check at the los bengals are playing run tannehill sees it and changes the play to a vertical with wallace in one on one coverage no deep safety help...pass pro holds up looks off any potential help coverage by having his head and eyes to the opposite side of the field in his drop redirects his head shoulders and feet to the target and throws a strike down the field in front of wallace where he can walk under it for 6...corner does what he has to do and tackles the ankles...outstanding check at the los and execution by the qb on the play...catch em in a coverage check to a play to take advantage of it and take a shot...flip the field...awesome
i think charles clay is a restricted free agent at the end of the season...miami has to at minimum tender him with a 2nd rounder...he's a great fit for this o and while he's not an alpha tight end he has made leaps and bounds recognizing coverage and leverage and running routes accordingly...and he has also shown this year that he can be flexed out wide and win a one on one with a db quickly to the inside...his versatility his improvement as a blocker and his overall game has been outstanding...better tender that high
michael egnew finally some return on this 2nd year 3rd round pick...major improvement in line as a blocker and blocker period...made a nice catch and run and thru contact play on the wide stretch bootleg play...finally...he's never gonna be awesome but we are at least getting some return and validating a roster spot...
on defense i know cam wake stole the show and had 3 sacks but he's still not all the way back...he still doesn't have the same level of explosion out of his stance and burst around the corner that we have seen in the past...and he got owned on the goalline and vs the run by the tight end gresham...owned...wake has to win that battle...fully healthy i don't think the bengals can get away with that but right now he's still just not right...he was collapsed down to the inside too much last night...although 10 more days of rest will sure help things...
olivier vernon solid game last night...already has 5 sacks on pace for 8 or more about all i could ask...had some ugly games but i think the solid play has outnumbered the poor in the first half...
dion jordan still not getting enough run...pulled on goalline especially cause they don't trust him at the poa...coming off the pats showing i can see why...not ready to be an every down player...but with wake getting right time to get creative with jordans use...
paul solia i see ya big fella...his key reads and the way he attacks the shoulder of the olineman is just terrific...disrupting the run game getting held for no call has to play thru the whistle and not look for calls but this dudes an animal and a critical resign...open that wallet miami...solia is the man
philip wheeler good lord...i said weeks ago that after clabo wheeler is the biggest weakness on this team...nothings changed...you want to see ugly weakside lb play take a look at that game tying td drive to knot it up at 17...my lord...this contracts horrid...clean in the hole to ben jarvis green ellis should be a stop at the los ellis spins wheeler is left in the dust for a big gain...dammit all that's your job...clean to the ball fill timely everyone else did their job and it should be a max 2 yard gain you don't even get a hand on the guy into the 2nd level he goes...and since when is green ellis a make you miss in the hole back...
even worse the 35 yard td run...grimes comes up in support stops bernard in his tracks in the backfield wheeler is clean flies up overruns the play somehow and worse tries to tackle high on a tiny back...we know the rest...that dudes awful...
dmitri patterson big loss if long term...playing damn good ball...looks like another great fit for this scheme...puts his foot in the ground in off coverages and drives forward to the ball...got a pick on a terrible placement throw that was late anyways at the end of the first half...that was brandon weeden esque ball placement...
brent grimes should have changed his cleats in the first half he was falling down all over the place...could have broken up a few throws had he not slipped coming back to the ball...still thats a tough assignment with aj green...hats off...got a pick on another horrid placed too far inside pick 6 by the red rocket i guess people call this overrated qb...these corners compete for the football i know that much...
going forward we surprised cinci on a short week with the extra ot package in the first half...hadn't shown it prior and as a result there was no prep on cincis end...teams will have a better feel for it now but there's no reason we can't use it at different times in games...this team needs to stay out of 5 man front protections as much as possible...getting martin back would help but sherman needs to understand that the oline is not gonna morph into great pass pro players we must limit the exposure and work off pa and take shots when we get them...
4-4 headed to the 2nd half of our season right in the mix of the wildcard hunt go to tampa next week and expose that rookie qb and bad lockerroom right back in it...no excuses...hell with the way the pats have been hit injury wise the division is still possible...they are gonna have a hard time overcoming the loss of their right tackle and hiding some of those other earlier losses...
finally i think it's fair to say that philbin has not lost that lockerroom...those players balled out yesterday and left it on the line...that wasn't a team where the message has fallen on deaf ears...
