hoops scoops...fins bengals

When the play breaks down, I think Tannehill gets wide-eyed. He does a good job of diagnosing the play before the snap, and I know you've covered that a lot. Totally agree there. But take Luck and Wilson. How many times do we see them make something out of nothing? There's no panic when the play breaks down. They use their feet to buy time and make plays. Tannehill does this sometimes. I really thought he turned a corner last season against the Bengals. There were at least two plays where he beautifully avoided pressure to make big throws down the field. Often, when there is pressure, Tannehill folds up like a TV tray. He's athletic enough to escape a lot of the pressure that overwhelms him. I don't think it's intelligence or athleticism holding him back here. I think it's instincts.
And I think it's lack of experience at the position. Like I said last week, something similar would happen if you put a track star at wide receiver and expected him to play the entirety of the position.

That said, however, Tannehill played well last night in exactly the kind of more limited role he should've been in all year long IMO.

if we had a marshawn lynch we probably could...a back that runs thru contact all the time...all the time...daniel thomas does some of that but miller does not...ever

also that defense gives the ball back to the o all the time in great position...ours does not...and they dont have a weakness like philip wheeler to exploit like we do

Yeah, Zac Stacy would look really nice in our backfield. But with Clay and Wallace, I think we have guys who make it more difficult for the D to come up with 8 guys in the box. After last night's game, we're averaging a healthy 4.3 YPC - just .1 below Seattle's 4.4.

Great write up as usual.

My biggest concern going forward is the inability to stop 3rd and Long on D. It's gut-wrenching watching us give up big play after big play on 3rd down. Crucial stops don't happen and the D allows plays to be extended much further than need be. I'm happy with where we are at half way through this season considering the circumstances, but there is still A LOT of room for improvement. For starters, no more of this giving up huge leads bull ****. Finish a team off in the 3rd quarter for christ's sake. They definitely shined in the face of adversity last night, where they have struggled mightily in the last 3 games prior to the Bengals.

Tannehill looked sharp for the most part. I mean 20-28 with 0 picks says a lot. With that running game opening up we're starting to see some flashes of what this team can bring. They stayed in the hunt with this win last night, and they need to feed off of this momentum from a crazy win. There are a lot of issues that do need to be addressed, but I'll enjoy this win and enjoy going into MNF against the Bucs.

I agree with all this. Ryan Alex Smith Tannehill for the win.

Damn straight, I'll take a game manager all day long if it leads to wins. His ceiling is high, so we have to let him develop the ability to handle a game from a managing standpoint. He did a pretty good job of it last night.

did you watch seattle against the rams??? all the pressure on wilson was wide rush pressure off the edge...he could have stepped up to the inside on just about all of those sacks he had the space...tannehill when the pressure came in the first 5 games at least it was power pressure where the tackles were jammed back into him collapsing almost and you either step up or you bail the pocket backwards the latter of which means the timing of the routes and throws is shot ...he tries to step up but after that initial power rush to collapse the pocket around him the defenders have been getting that inside arm and shoulder free and he runs right into the contact...i don't know what you guys want him to do...how is that a lack of instincts???

now we have corrected some of that with mckinnie because like i saw on ravens tape and said he does not get just bullrushed back to his qb and thrown in his lap...and by helping the other tackle as much as possible of late...you don't see as many collapsed down on the qb pockets anymore...

and as a result the qb is making more plays vs wide as in around the edge pressure...the difference folks is the run game emphasis yes but it's also the personnel upgrades and yesterday at least scheme changes implementing an extra ot

i said it before and i'm saying it now bryant mckinnie saved our season...the qb was not and is not the issue...

Good write up Hoops -> I agree with the Wheeler signing outside of that Atlanta game -> UGLY!!! -> Horrible no instincts and not that athletic unless blitzing after pylon QBs -> the whole 4th Q I was screaming where are the athletes? Other than the D line -> Ellerbe is a keeper, he does the uinstinctive stuff but also has a nose for the ball too

this o in the passing game is predicated entirely on timing...everything comes as a result of timing...yes things break down sometimes and he has to try and make a play and in the red zone especially this year we have seen just that with tannehill keeping plays alive and leaving the pocket and finding guys uncovering late etc...

but this is a timing qb also...he wants the ball to come out all based on timing...the routes are run the same...if you want this guy to bail the pocket backwards and run around like a chicken with his head cut off before making a play vs broken down coverage that's not really what he is...can he do it and has he shown it??? yes he has...that 46 yard dime rolling to his weak side to gibby was exactly that vs the ravens...

but by and large this is a pocket qb he needs to be able to step up...play action rollout and bootlegs are different...not what i'm referring to...those plays are designed that way and also a real strength of this kids...the pocket play and calls off timing are designed for him to stay in the pocket and deliver and step up vs wide rush pressure...

again this is a 2nd year qb folks...these aren't weaknesses they just take time...the talent and ability is all there...think tom brady not russell wilson...brady with better legs and more move calls ability

can't thanks button now feature is absent???

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!! Thill is not the issue!!! -> let's pray that Mckinnie has a season left in those legs wow he looks wonky when he walks

i've said it before and i'm saying it now and you guys can roll eyes all you want...ryan tannehill over the long term is the best young qb in the game...his ceiling is higher than even andrew lucks people...

it's just gonna take time for him to hit his peak...THE BEST LONG TERM FUTURE QB IN THE GAME IS RYAN TANNEHILL...

The problem for Luck may not be skills similar to Marino's curse, best QB to never win the big one, I mean the Colts FO is impatient, their FO has this thingee about giving away draft picks - for immediate REWARD -> Luck may have the Sidney Crosby curse everyone thinks he should win the big game every year or you are a failure. We'll see which QB has the better mental make up but I like that the expectations on Thill are more reasonable.

It takes a lot of things to fall right to win the big one and that's what is measured these days

alex smith wishes he had the upside and long term future that ryan tannehill does...

On a lighter note, there's a pretty good chance we get to see the jets lose twice before our next game is played. :brewskis:
