i'd be lying if i didnt say i was real nervous half way thru the 3rd quarter...real nervous...but this team went out in a must win situation and got it done...and we are absolutely alive and kicking in the final 6 games of the regular season playoff hunt...regardless of outcome next week at denver...

ok let's get to it...

bill lazor put together a really nice game plan on a short week...from the implementation of pick plays to get easy 10 yard gains to the getting away from the read option as i have called for and more shotgun and under center work both in the red zone and across the entire length of the field...when you have a qb that doesnt have to be pidgeonholed into playing one style of offense ie the read option or pistol but has also demonstrated he can play in a traditional pocket offense from shotgun and under center and make sound decisions and proper reads with the ball you don't limit him...lazor seems to be figuring this out...still waiting for the ability to check out of calls at the los etc and that time is past due with this qb but lazor did a bang on job in this game...

i'm sure bill has some reservations about how much he can play in shotgun and under center with as leaky a right tackle as we have and tackle concerns period and i dont blame him but this team has to take those chances...run some read option absolutely but work in the passing game and off pa from other things as well...

every week though i see instances where bill thinks he's back in college...this week we work a hard action pa where the right tackle again sells it post snap down inside leaving a free to the qb mario williams but the play calls for sims to post snap come back across the formation and pick up williams one on one this is all after thill completes the play fake and hard action to the opposite side...the play is designed to hit clay on the vertical crosser while wallace and hartline run vertical clear out routes and its set up well and we have it but theres no time you can't ask even a damn good blocking tight end to get over there like that vs a clean never touched mario williams and that not blow up in your face...and it did...if thats an olb clean or a undersized de ok maybe even a 34 olb sims might be able to get over there but mario williams all 285 lbs of him nope...can't do it...those kind of play calls kill drives

miami beat the blitz all game long...i mean torched em...this is where i will start with the qbs play...first drive of the game slot db blitzes thill sees it hits landry working a quick in cut makes a guy miss gains like 12 yards...3rd and 24 thill sees the blitz hits damien williams releasing out of the backfield down the seam for a huge conversion after a big sack set us way back...the play after thill caught his own tipped ball and lost 4 yards when he should just knock it down it's 3rd and 7 thill sees the edge blitzer and knows he will be unaccounted for hits wallace just before contact after working his cadence and getting an offside free play just before that blitzer can contact him...another play we motion hartline into the slot slot db shows blitz and comes thill beats it with a shallow cross to hartline in front of two zone drop lbs and he turns it up the sideline for a big like 30 yard gain...that's a qb who sees things presnap and accounts for them...bang on job by tannehill id'ing these things and accounting for them and then post snap beating them on them...

i think i counted 3 drawn offsides by the qb with his cadence...that's growth...takes time to develop it and it's coming...a free 5 yards or a free take a shot opportunity...well done

first drive of the game 3rd down buffalo is trying to get the qb to take the bait vs the off single coverage of clay and presnap and even early post snap it is where the ball should go but they buzz a lb underneath late and if thill throws that ball more catchable low it's a pick...i can imagine what was being said about the qb in the game thread on that 'overthrow"...nice job dont take points off the board fg on the next play...a bait play by the d and the qb didnt take it

one questionable decision 3rd and 13 he tries to hit mathews working a vertical in cut vs a zone d duke williams is in that area and doesnt continue to drop mathews is illegally contacted and he may have actually cut across in front of that ball in front of williams on the play had he not been held up...tough to say but i think thats a tight window either way...

shook the ss out of his shoes on the read option keeper and slide in the 2nd level play...nice!!! loved the missing wallace late in the game on 3rd down in the red zone play he read it right had what he wanted just a ball thrown poorly and he knew it...he threw down the folder cursed stomped you name it...love it...that's a qb saying i know damn well i'm better than that and not being satisfied...qb played a damn good game...under a lot of duress even off of quick stuff and he stood in and took big shots and got right back up every time...have to love this kids heart...

nice td to gibson set up by the same look and prior pitch plays...great play design...

jamar taylor way to bring it...that was an excellent first start game from this 2nd year corner...physical tackled drove on routes...well done...young pup stepping up...i already know next week vs that veteran wr core and great timing qb he's gonna have some issues and some plays will be made against him but this kids a real talent and as he learns route combinations and keys and studies tape on tendencies in scenarios etc i think he's only gonna get better...

louis delmas outside of the kc game where he was awful and not getting depth vs calvin johnson one on one with brent grimes for the td i think has played an excellent safety...anticipates...physical flies to the football...flat out has played better football in miami than he did in detroit...and the knees havent seemed to be an issue...nice anticipation to undercut the slot seam route breaking into the middle of the field to hogan should have been a pick 6...definitely better ball skills and awareness than we have seen in the past at that spot...

lamar miller with some nice make the first man miss and get north and south...some shoulder and feet shake etc...fell forward...brought the same explosive quick acceleration and for a guy nursing a shoulder he sure played hard thru contact...scheme fits him well...better vision to see things on the backside of late also...didnt show any vision last year or run thru contact...

sucks for will davis i'm sure thats a season ender...played a solid specials better tackler this year still needs to work on hand use and physical strength but that kids making strides...miami needs to be in the market for a 4th corner

brian hartline showed some real heart...he ran to contact today with the football...no going to ground took some big shots...

miami had a shot at 3 ints of orton made good on none of them...just not good luck really...brent grimes is buzzing underneath a out route to hogan he's off balance orton makes a bad read i think expecting grimes to carry coverage inside he drops but hogan pushes grimes on the shoulder to ground otherwise that's an int by grimes...red zone pa tipped ball by odrick reshad jones is cutting underneath that route for a pick and maybe a rac down the sideline for a big gain if not td...and the delmas undercut of the seam slot route...

jarvis landry way to bounce back from a momentum changing at the time fumble...miamis going to getting him involved in the red zone now and he's making good on things...making guys miss in space...nice play design on that td also...if teams are gonna focal point clay and wallace get this kid involved...he can win quickly also

jawuan james for a first game left tackle start was solid...he did have some hiccups in pass pro late in the game got beat inside by hughes a few times and on that big play action sack by williams he was beaten inside again by hughes but that looked more like he was late to pick up what his assignment was and when he did realize it he was too late...i dont know what more we could ask from this top 20 pick...what a solid player...i can tell though the left tackle play early is gonna be dicey

right tackle though...yikes...miami has to work more shotgun and under center and that kind of right tackle play in pass pro wont get it done...thomas had some solid moments but if this game had been on the road with how quickly he got beat at times or jacked back into the qb and all those hits on the qb as a result i dont think we'd have a shot in hell of winning...the ball came out quick and the qb was still getting planted...that's a tough assignment for sure and he's got another one coming this next week i think it could be really damn ugly...if i'm miami i'm looking for a different option...but i'm sure we will ride this out longer...

i'm seeing some and i expect to see more taking advantage of misi in zone coverage on early downs with the slot crossing his area...it looks like an easy pitch catch opportunity for a solid gain...

the safety call if allowing for the wrong route to be run by the wr is not a reason not to call that then they got it right...that's a tough call for sure though...if you can't argue that the wr broke the wrong way thus the ball was where it was then ok...safety it is

solid win vs a tough opponent and a physical front on defense...10 days off to get healthy and clean some things up...these last 6 games are gonna be a wild ride

Totally agree.
We ran that play and I just shook my head really, Bill?!!? With all due respect to Dion Sims

Lazor needs to learn these slow developing plays may work against William and Mary not an NFL defense.

I can't help but chuckle at the people who hold the YPA stat so close to their their heart as the all being measurement of a QBs ability. 7.1 was certainly not what I expected.

Good write up as always hoops. Looking forward to Jamar to just keep getting better with experience. We really need Finnegan back and quickly though. Wish we had more quality cb depth

Good job hoops

Is Misi the long term solution at MLB? He may have a few coverage issues, but he looks like the long term answer to me.

Did anyone get the impression that Lazor kept things simple in order to unveil new tactics against Denver? Or was the game plan fairly basic because of the revamped OL and short week? When Tannehill threw that incomplete pass to Wallace in the end zone with 2 1/2 minutes remaining instead of calling a run and forcing Buffalo to use its last timeout, I interpreted that as a potential confidence builder for Tannehill in preparation for Denver.

Great summary Hoops! Enjoyed reading your take, as always.

OL issues and the strength of that DL. It was no surprise that they were going to have to get the ball out quickly.

I love how upset Tannehill was he missed that last TD to Wallace. A guy that upset with himself is going to practice that and hit it next time

I'm trying to temper my excitement because I predicted Buffalo's D would be flat for this one but holy **** this offense suits Miller well. D2 looked great as well.

As for that play call where Sims was supposed to get across I don't have an issue with it. It was just a great play by Mario, he didn't fall for the trickery. I've seen Wake blow plays up not falling for things and I never think it was a stupid play call by their offense, I always think 'great play Wake!!!' And I'm sure he tried it in practice and if it fooled Wake then it should fool anybody.

I was all over the place on Tannehill yesterday. One minute I was thinking he's really looking focused today, then the next minute I'm screaming at my TV. You see signs the game is slowing down for him, like he had the wherewithal to look back to see where the defender was on the play just before the fumble. The fumble was horrible obviously but that was also a sign of good pocket awareness and that he's starting to the play the game. If he can just get that deep ball figured out our offense could be a terror.

He'll get the deep ball figured out.

His ability to make quick reads and extend plays with his legs was the difference in the game last night. Those are both things people were dinging him for previously. He just keeps adding things to his game and improving them. It's why I remain very bullish on him as our QB going forward.

Good job hoops

looks more like a 2 down mike or sam backer no matter what to me...i still think athletically ideal slot is strong...if he's on the field on 3rd down it should either be short yardage or goalline or he should be rushing on an overload type scenario on the edge or covering the flat...i want a more all around play every down mike and athlete...but those are hard to come by...but he's miles better than trusnick that's for sure

miamis gonna have to sacrifice some pitch and catch around him on early downs for his poa strength and inside run game play...he's made some plays in the backfield vs the run also which is something this teams rarely seen...i think i have counted 2 read and diag gap shoot penetration and stop plays...wasnt sure i'd ever see that from him...and he gives you a power blitzer that can run over backs in pass pro...getting better vs the screen game also as he sees more of them

He should have been upset because that was an easy throw for RT. He makes those usually. I think of the Wallace TD in Chicago for example. For some reason he just misfired.

Yeah you could see he was much better under pressure than Kyle Orton is. Once we started getting after Orton his throws were too early and wildly inaccurate. Tanny was cool under more pressure, we got the better QB play in this one.
