Hoops scoops...fins patriots

One other thing to like.. Wheeler is losing a decent amount of coverage snaps to Jelani Jenkins. He's marginally better than Wheeler at least, and still young... Did a great job on Vereen today.

Con'grats, Hoops. Sweet vindication.

What's amazing is this: Some football guys (perhaps guys that played/coached the position) on here are not surprised by what happened today. We've been calling it since the end of last year -- that we have a franchise QB in RT, he just needs weapons and protection. Even without great weapons and with a thrown-together OL -- he owned NE. Best game against the best, at crunch time -- this after facing straight up a desperate Steeler team in their place! Wow. Best two games of a Miami QB since Dan the Man.

And indicative of what you and some others could clearly see. And told ppl before it happened.

That ain't luck, folks. Talent and knowledge.

That ain't Luck... Awesome

bump I got confirmation bias, some posters don't know their good QB from a hole in the ground.

Great, great win. Down with 4 minutes remaining to the Steelers and Patriots and emerge with two victories is something special. The Patriots were energized and well prepared today and we still took them out.

I couldn't believe Nantz and Simms wanted a punt with 3 minutes remaining. Sure, let Tom Brady control your fate. That was a fantastic decision and I had no doubt Philbin would make the correct choice. Only thing I didn't appreciate was the play call. Normally that's a 20% option at best, asking a player to gain 5+ yards after the catch to manage the first down. We were incredibly fortunate, not much different than Brown running out of bounds last week. The Patriots safety Gregory took a terrible angle and allowed Clay to duck inside him.

* Obscure key play of this game was New England's first extra point. I'm serious. Watch that kick, if anyone still has it on tape. The ball trailed 2 feet to the right. Trust me, Gostkowski saw every bit of that and it impacted his missed field goal early in the third quarter, which was kicked in the same direction. As a golfer I knew he would compensate severely by aiming left on such a long kick, after a short one was apparently shoved 2 feet right by the wind. Sure enough, he aimed left and the ball never moved. You could see the dismay in his face. He did it exactly where he wanted to but instead of cutting many feet to the right the ball pierced the wind and stayed true. That missing 3 points completely altered the end of the game.

* Another key play was 3rd and short at the New England 40 with 40 seconds remaining the first half. Notice the Patriots overplayed the center of the formation, with tons of guys at the line of scrimmage. They expected Miami might run an inside trap for a first down. That's indeed a Dolphin tendency but it didn't apply in that situation, with so little time remaining and short of time outs. I was calling for a deep shot after seeing that defensive alignment and it was awesome that we took the shot downfield

* Thank goodness Brady threw 3 of the final 4 passes to the outside. I continue to believe we are more vulnerable in the interior. In fact, once Thomas backed off on the final play, Brady could have hesitated one count and burned us over the middle. Clemons was beat to the inside. Also, Clemons has to make that interception on the play earlier when Brady half rolled to the right and didn't sense Clemons

* Tannehill really picks up his game late in a drive. Seemingly he can be stopped early but once he converts the initial first down he's more and more dangerous. That's a great trait.

* I was happy that the refs stayed out of the way and treated it like a playoff game

* Spread climbed to Miami -2.5 this morning. That allowed me to take New England +1 in the first half. I already had +1 in the game from yesterday. Those +1 numbers in the first half are gold, when you win with a tie score. But key drive for me by far was Kirk Cousins sticking it into the end zone for the Redskins late against Atlanta. That game got bet to Falcons -6.5 so it fit my great system that I've mentioned for years, of betting against a .500 or lower team that is giving 6 or more at home. I probably would have lost if stiff Robert Griffin had played. But with Cousins I expected to win handily so I bet more than normal on that game. He blew a 3 point 4th quarter lead but then threw the covering touchdown pass with about 20 seconds remaining. That was huge for me. I was thrilled when the Redskins decided to go for 2. In the old days as long as you had +6.5 in overtime you had to win. Now the game can fall 7. That's another pain in the ass of the new overtime rules.

* Congratulations to anyone who had Dolphins over 7.5 wins. Now I guess we still have to wait for any stragglers who played over the final number, when it climbed to 8

This is one of the best Mondays I've had in years. Woke up with a smile on my face. Beating the Pats in a huge game to get a step closer to the playoffs and all because you FINALLY have a QB? Feels good man.

This was one of the best X-mas presents I've ever received. It seemed like the last minute of the game went on for hours!!!! Props to Matthews for making that fantastic catch along the sidelines during the final Miami TD Drive, late in the 4th quarter. Props to Brenner for solidifying the LG spot with little to no pro experience. Props to Thomas for his athleticism and wherewithal to seal the game by making several plays in that final minute to help win the game. Props to Philbin for his leadership throughout Bully Gate, by keeping the team focused. This was a very enjoyable, but nerve wracking win!!! and celebrated by lighting up one of my Vanilla Cigars!!!! Fantastic Win!!! Happiest I've been in a long Dolphin Time!!!

I guess I should be fair and point out that tannehill almost got baited once today and it would have been a serious momentum changer...the pats blitzed a wide player once and tannehill went immediately to his hot on the wide left like you would want your qb to do basically throw it back into the vacated area...the ball was tipped by the wide rusher and it was a good thing for us cause the pats were slipping that inside lb right underneath it trying to bait the qb....no doubt In my mind balls not tipped that's a pick or at least a damn good undercut from the inside opportunity for the lb...

Teams know his presnap reads are damn good like really damn good and he's not gonna throw it into coverage post snap off those looks so they are trying to dial up some post snap packages to rotate into his presnap proper looks on where to go with the football...

Other than that bait play which will take time and probably some trial and error for him to start to feel the d's intentions he was spot on all night...balls into tight windows all over the place...inside the numbers outside the numbers and down the seam...elite level qb play

actually i was wrong on this...i went back and looked at it and the lb would not have gotten there...he was on his horse to get over there but from too far inside...mathews would have caught it and been able to turn up for the conversion likely but the safety gregory was closing fast...so no bait job on that one either...it just looked closer cause the ball died after the tip

To me the best part of yesterday's game regarding Tannehill is he beat Brady, and still made several pretty bad throws. His ceiling is about as high as it gets.

Your posts are excellent, hooshoops. I've been reading your analysis and then going back to my recording to learn more (being on UK television yesterday makes this one of the few games I can watch back). Certainly, helping me know more and become a better fan. Appreciated.

Really enjoying the positive attention Tannehill is getting...

Sit back and enjoy having a franchise QB guys....everything else gets much easier once you get that position solved...

i'll just say this brady didnt have time to come to the inside on that last play cause odrick had walked the right guard right back into his legs and hit him low...had he had time he probably does see the corner drop out and hit the inside wr crossing clemons face who was flat footed as hell

still given the timing of that throw and how damn off davis was behind the wr if thomas isn't there that looks like a game winning td to me...so i guess in a way we baited brady...just a good thing odrick got there cause i think he comes off it otherwise

Hoops I'm not as high on him yet as you are but the growth we are seeing this season is clearly indicative that we have a pretty damn good QB. That adjustment to throw on 4th and 5 and the throw to Thigpen for the TD show great instincts. I'm starting to think you may be right in the long run about his being the best of that class.

tannehills use of his head and shoulders to disguise his intentions is really coming along...take a look at the vertical pa ball where wallace runs the double move and mckinnie gets beat and he's hit on the follow thru influencing the ball...he comes out of his drop with his head and shoulders pointed entirely to the left side influencing the hell out of the deep safety mccourty to that side then comes back with his head feet and shoulders to his true intentions the vertical to wallace...the only thing that saved them on that play was the hit on the qb on the follow thru...if he has time to let that go clean if it's on target it's 6...he runs by everyone

i also see some underneath looking off of lbs who are trying to jump things to the outside and working of the seam etc...not a ball into coverage anywhere...threw one too far inside to mathews on a inside route with a deep safety where out in front he catches but that corner ryan was getting away with getting beat to the inside grab and turns all over the place...mathews was setting him up damn well...hell the first punt we had was cause of the db getting beat to the inside grabbing and holding mathews and the ball off his fingers...outside quick redirect inside moves from mathews down the seam are damn impressive...

tannehill saw that mismatch vs the lb on the td to thigpen all the way...even explained what he expected to see leverage wise in the post game on field interview...damn this kids the goods
