footballs back!!!

just one game but let's get to it...

not a lot to say about scheme on o...saw some no huddle but as expected kept it pretty vanilla therefore we'll pretty much stick with player evaluation today...maybe there will be some more scheme talk on both sides in the dress rehearsal the 3rd preseason game scoops...

kiko Alonso...i get a little nervous when i see a guy who is ahead of the play on repeat instinctually who isn't making the plays he should make...the instincts look excellent the concern i have is why is the ball moving forward by him when he's in such sound position? kiko missed tackles and laterally athletically doesn't quite look the same to me...maybe it's just rust...we better hope so...that tight red zone tackle attempt is just not acceptable...he's by far the most instinctual lb this teams had in long time from shooting gaps to not taking false steps but it doesn't matter if you don't finish...

cause if he doesn't james Michael johnson is just another athlete ilb with no clue...if he starts we are screwed

i don't see much in the lb depth at all...Neville Hewitt looks like depth that we may get by with...scheme would have to hide the hell out of spencer paysinger

on the edge as a pass rusher the most interesting guy i saw is chris McCain...that extra space in the wide 9 helps keep tackles hands off him early and he gets off the ball well...not much polish but he did have a nice spin move rush vs the 2nd team tackle...i think you carry him frankly as a potential sub rusher you wont get by with him on early downs as a de and i could see him with some qb flushed out/clean up gravv plays also...some wake insurance

andre branch sets the edge well in the run game and gives you high effort but i think he's a 5 sack max type...start him as the 2 down de pull him in the sub barring injury

Terrence fede gives you nothing as a pass rusher...his tools are just nothing...he can even jump the snap and it doesn't matter despite the wide 9 alignment...it's a walk in the park for tackles...he's just gonna waste pass rush downs if he plays for ya...kid better really set the edge

at dt i don't see anything cracking the top 4 rota of suh, Mitchell, Phillips, jones...i think that's a done deal

Phillips will provide splash plays and i do see a more conditioned athlete but i still have concerns about consistency and poa play...he doesnt look ready to dominate yet but he's got all the potential...to get there the poa play will have to get better...i do expect more production this year

chris jones looks like a undersized rotational dt...wasn't wowed with anything...the kind of guy you like in the rotation you don't like as a every down starter...the kind that makes a play here or there...i need to see more...first look was kinda meh

isa Abdul quddus looks like a package safety or a corner...i had to do a double take...i thought for sure miami was in dime when i first saw him...looks kinda small...loses contain on a clean release into
the backfield run blitz where he overruns the play...can't happen that's your responsibility...play breaks big cause you blow the assignment...red zone td rb runs right thru kiko first then quddus falls off like a twig...ehh it's something to watch these next 2 games

walt aikens with some nice physicality and ball pursuit...but with that kid it's all about between the ears...maybe joseph is getting to him...last year he didn't tackle at free safety just one game but he tackled...he just doesn't strike me as very bright on the field

at corner i was probably most impressed with tony lippett...in terms of i can see where he's showing enough to continue to develop...he stuck his head in there in the run game and he's fluid has good feet and very good awareness.....the red flag for me is he allows too much separation out of in cuts...and until he does fix that i think teams would murder him with them...the long speed issues of course are the other concern...still he's interesting

bobby McCain was beaten on a post route where he allowed too much separation out of the cut... balls thrown where it should be that's 6...i continue to see him allow too much separation out of cuts...the int was nice ball skills but that's a wheel route that needs to be thrown outside over the top away from the safety

rashaan Melvin i liked in press although in the tight red he needs to understand route combos and locate the football...he walled the wr off well but he has to turn his head after he walls off and locate or they will call the foul...i wonder about him in off and zone

Jordan lucas looks the part physically....he'd get torched if he played vs 1's right now at corner but he's got boundary tools and I'd at least practice squad him to continue to develop as a corner

this team needs more competition at corner be it boundary or slot and in that regard xavien howard and chris culliver can't get on the field fast enough...i see a lot of guys not ready to play if they had to

on offense lets start with the massive elephant in the room the oline...

first drive of the game it's first down we run it dallas Thomas comes off the ball gets stacked and jacked by the dt just waiting to see which gap the rb will choose no gain...it should be said billy turner also lost laterally on the play but his angle was more difficult...3rd and 9 Thomas gets bull rushed right back into the qb on skates...when is enough enough? when we lose our starting qb? cut this...3 plays 2 flat out fails

Brandon albert looked a little stiff to me...he's always been a little upright but he looks a little less lateral short area quick in his kick slide...looked a little rusty...just something to watch

billy turner still looks to me like the right option at right guard...he's got the disposition he's got the punch and the strength and he's a hell of an athlete...gets to the 2nd level well locates and makes solid contact on lb targets...can still get beat off the ball but has the athleticism to recover...he's getting looks at depth right tackle and he got beat one time when he like in college dropped his head and stopped moving his feet...basically a carbon copy of what would beat him in college...he has to trust his feet...sit back and don't lunge and drop your head and beat the player laterally to the spot

laremy tunsil made it look easy at times especially in pass pro vs the 2's...he looked bored even...i have no doubts he will be running with the 1's soon...in fact that change should be made full time this week...end the dallas Thomas disaster...i think the hold up here and i guess i do get this is that laremy looks like he's thinking a lot right now...the concern is blowing assignments...for instance the stop route to jakeem grant where moore got hit on the release...laremy picks up the dt who rushes him inside off the snap so that they can loop another defender in the gap created...laremys head watches the loop man go clean to the qb in zone laremy should pass off the inside shoulder rusher to the center and kick out and pick up the loop...being guard is so new to him that's something only reps and muscle memory can prepare you for...he needs all the reps at guard he can get...he's still a tackle trying to play guard but he's the best option this team has...

i thought bushrod another tackle playing guard also looked the part...urbik anchors well but is a very average athlete...this is the depth i would carry...and the final spot would go to steen or douglas who as the 3rd team center is in serious jeopardy...he better step up....steens arms are too short to play guard (which doesnt help him) but he played a lunch pail center

i didn't see any wide stretch which we may obviously be tableing in the preseason but if it is our run game advantage move athletes on the oline....

jakeem grant welcome to the 53...that kids just too dynamic...they wont cut that...drops or no drops....north south mindset as a kick returner...jump cuts on a dime full speed...if gase is a matchup guy he will find ways to get that guy the ball...one preseason game was enough...I'm sold although i have no doubts his regular offense run and production will be hit and miss

leontee caroo well i will put it this way...dvp better stay healthy...there's no reason that should break the top 3 wrs this year...not a lot of burst off the ball...vice grip hands...i was a little underwhelmed...i can see him getting some package run in 12 personnel and in stills place in 11 but if he starts this year no i don't see it out the gate....very willing run blocker...

i think these 2 round out your wr core...don't carry anything else

at tight end the jones kid looks like the #3 to me...duartes td showed off the fluid athlete...but he's not gonna block and you will probably scrape the athlete if you ask him to gain weight to do it...i think he's more the 2 year project type see if he can be a move mismatch then

at rb ajayi runs with the mentality and physicality i want in a single back o...has to catch the rock though...that tip in the air in the flats is brutal....bottom line is there isn't much talent here...pead looks like a guy vs ones that will try all those video game spins and get his head taken off...stay healthy arian foster

at qb matt moore with 2 matt moore like coverage reads...pa throws the ball right to a drop out lb for a pick just a flat out awful coverage read...not an ounce of disguise in that...later 3rd and 5 wants dion sims on a late release flat route doesn't recognize eli apple has the flats and makes another poor decision

i think the one thing i really noticed in terms of the team is there is not a lot of depth...there's a lot of guys even in the 2 deep where if they play we got problems...i know that's pretty universal but the fall off in Miami is substantial....can adam gase and vance joseph make up for it? we'll see

kiko Alonzo Miami needs more...Byron Maxwell be ready to play like a #1...devantae parker stay healthy...

see ya next week for another addition of scoops

Hoops who is Fox the tight end you mentioned. I don't recall the name or see it on a roster? Was it Gray, Jones or Hughes that you meant?

I agree that Caroo isn't that impressive.

Extremely slow off the line. Extremely average quickness. Gonna struggle with separating against NFL talent.

Strong hands. That's about it. Pretty much a dime a dozen kind of a player, imo.

He'll probably take about three years to develop into an average possession WR, by the looks of it.

Typical Miami non-explosive WR.

From a win. Yikes. I agreed with most but it tapered off at the end for me.

I think the fact that we won the game showed that we actually have better depth. We seemed like the better team but it was only the first preseason game of the season,

We never have depth -_-

But i suppose if we cant plug obvious weakness and leave them gaping for years we shouldnt even expect depth

Damn glad you're throwing out some scoops again this year man.

Gotta read this whole thing through though. Thank god I just got to work and it's not busy

I think Carroo will surprise a few people. He's not a blazer, but I think at the least he becomes a better version of Rishard Matthews.

Two different players. Matthews might have been a step slower downfield, but had more explosion off the line and in and out of intermediate cuts. Caroo just looks too slow to me off the line and in the parts of the routes that value explosion, cuts, etc.

Sure hands, though. And stout body. So maybe he could find a way to complement other WRs. He looks like a perennial 3 or 4 WR to me. No the high 2 he was drafted to be.

IMO you guys are underrating Caroo. He's one of those guys that's moving much faster than it looks like. He's going to win off the line if they press him with his strength and he is going to be a very good possession receiver this season, it won't take 3 years. He has great hands and that makes him an important piece of our offense. He is compared to Anquan Boldin and that's a pretty amazing guy to be compared to. He's far from Boldin now but he's also far from being a dime a dozen guy. This offense won't be really clicking until game 4 or 5 of the regular season so don't expect too much for a while but once Gase has the whole playbook inserted and the offense is playing fast and not thinking any more things are going to be way better than we've seen in ages. This is assuming the freaking oline gets with the program and performs like a decent to very good unit. If they fail the entire season will be a failure so they better get with it. If Gase keeps putting Dallas Thomas on the field in games he's going to get someone hurt badly. If Gase is smart he'll get rid of this good for nothing player. I don't care is he is a great practice player with a stellar work ethic. He sucks in games and what you do in games is everything. We, as fans, have seen enough of the out and out bum. If they have to put someone ahead of Laremy until he's ready go with Bushrod and let Dallas Thomas go sell shoes for Payless!

Carroo is going to need time. I agree though, he did not impress me from what I saw in the game. I liked him at Rutgers, a lot.....I've seen him take over games, but he looks like just another guy right now.

Funny how no one mentions Hazel even after his TD, but I get it....Hazel is most likely a goner.

absolutely disagree about the depth part, this team looks much deeper than i can't remember...we scored 27 unanswered points last night, when was the last time that has happened in a preseason game ? it might still be a fluke but we sure won't know it after this first game last night, because players like warmsley, pitts, hendy both mccains, hull looked pretty good last night

I think Carroo looked physically imposing in person. I think he's gonna complement the other WR's well.

Thing about Hazel is he doesn't really offer anything on special teams nor is he good enough to crack rotation. He's been a good developmental guy who just can't leapfrog over incoming guys.

I think the Dolphins are deeper from guys 45-60 on the roster but we're still weak from guys 20-44 on the roster.

Example our 3rd and 4th string LB's are nearly as good as our 2nd string which is below average of playoff caliber teams.

Good post and I hope you're right about Caroo.

Hazel made himself ineligible by going out of bounds and got lucky that the ball was tipped. He was uncovered because he went out of bounds and the DBs all made plays on the ball. So it was a massive fluke play. I mean, give him credit for making the catch -- but he got bailed out by a tipped ball and bad pass.
