i feel pretty confident that come close to 7 days from now when we go on the clock at pick 19 that lb cj mosley will still be on the board...we all know or should know by now that lb is a massive need...after offensive line the biggest hole in this roster...is cj mosley worth a top 20 pick and more important does he fit this coyle defense and would he get enough snaps as a rookie to validate the selection??? let's see what the tape says...before we get into this it should be noted this is pure tape evaluation the medical stuff is for the medical staff...they either clear him or they don't...i don't have access i know what he's dealt with but i don't know any more than that and so i'll go with what the tape tells me...i know the character is said to be flawless and you bet your ass for miami that matters...

reads keys and dxs well vs the inside running game...shoots proper gaps whether it be in lead blocker take on fill capacity or clean to the ball in the backfield...times his run blitzes well

shows outstanding awareness whether it be vs the run or the pass...always has eyes on the ball...knows where the ball is at all times...finds the football...period

flows laterally down the los to the ball well usually can elude 2nd level blockers who try to get out to him cause he's so sound with his read and dx and ahead of the play...

can appear late at times to attack the los and the ball moreso off tackle but i'm not sure i think it's he's late more than it's just he's wanting to make sure he has a proper angle to the ball before he fires his gun to avoid taking a poor angle or allowing for the cutback...reason i say that is he continues to laterally flow with the ball a few more paces even when i know he sees it and he trust it...no doubt in my mind he's angle to the ball conscious and working to not allow an escape route...

finishes tackles in space rarely overpursues or overruns plays some may say at times he looks like he's going 3/4 speed to the perimeter of the field but again i think it's about maintaining proper angles and not coming in too hot...will that bite him in the pro game unless he picks up his play speed on some stuff vs the elite level nfl speed where the angle will close before he gets there yes it will but i have no doubts that's fixable...it's not like he lacks speed for the position or instincts...his feel vs the run and pass game is very good

zone drop awareness and play is damn good...miami likes to drop the lbs a lot and most our guys are lost there's no doubt in my mind this trait of his will transfer to the next level and it would be a big boost to our core...understands route combinations and tendencies...maintains eye discipline between the qb who he's got an eye on at all times and any potential target that may enter his zone...reads qbs eyes well drops into throwing lanes and gets hands on the ball...you can't teach this kind of stuff they either got it or they don't...and he's got it

very assignment conscious...rarely blows an assignment...very dependable to be where he's supposed to be or handle his responsibility at all times...running back out of the backfield check qb on the keep check tight end down the seam in man coverage check...

pursues the ball well plays thru the snap rarely gives up on a play even if it's away from him etc...

doesn't show very good hands will flat drop easy ints he's put himself in sound position to create turnovers on...a lot of knocks for not creating sacks which miami asks it's lbs to do in the scheme or at least likes to bring the lbs a lot but what i see is a guy that times his blitzes well and forces the ball out and at times is sacrificed so that others can make plays in that regard...i don't see any real issue with his pass rush play other than he's light and when guys have him dead to rights well he's either washed out or owned but i guess that's to be expected...if clean i think he can find the qb...

not an elite level athlete but a every down nfl capable one aided by his awareness and his instincts...times low 4.6's plays about that too i'd say shows nice when he needs to get on his hoof quick acceleration and burst either in coverage or to the ball...fluid hips fluid change of direction long arms good height...sound in man coverage down the field shows the ability to run in a guys hip and turn and locate the football and make a play on it even...

a little light for the mike over the long haul i'd say not a take on and shed guy needs to be clean could man the mike for us a few years and eventually shift out to wolb maybe even next year...mike and wolb capabilities as i see it...every down player be the most naturally gifted and instinctual lb in the core from the day he arrived...

shows sound tackling form doesnt come in too high drives thru with the hips and wraps up...not a stone you in the hole lb at the next level but not a guy you're gonna drag either...

probably needless to say at this point but i see it as a very good fit and a much needed upgrade who will get plenty of run in our defense if he is the pick at #19 and if the medical is a go i would be willing to endorse this pick...the instincts the awareness the assignment responsible and the plus athlete and good timed speed all say to me come on down...it's worth a top 20 pick to me as a player on tape and as a fit for miami

Hoops - you show great logic as usual. He seems a good fit in a position of significant need. We have decent D-line and DBs but we need a good tackling mike LB with good instincts. However, I'd want a very very high level of confidence re his medical condition before putting my neck out and selecting him.
A lot of the Draft experts are now predicting a run on O-linemen early in the 1st round. Given our significant needs in this area, I can see us dropping the BPA script and going O-lineman in round 1, regardless of the merits of CJ Mosley.

Is it just me or are we going to have a **** load of good options at 19?

If we're going to draft defense, a linebacker who can step in and play right away would sure be nice.

I doubt he falls to us. I see the Giants picking up. I think Zack Martin would be a good pick here or maybe Eric Ebron if he slips past the Bills

Well, I don't have your cred Hoops but my eyes tell me a totally different story. He is a LB at the top of his game that will never get any better. He is slow for NFL standards and has a very low ceiling. He does not have excellent run play recogintion, average maybe, but not off the charts good. I will agree he is quite good in zone at reading the play but in man to man he will be a liablity. He will translate to being a solid pro, but by no means a game changer. He will play the middle like Koa plays the SOLB, and to me that just isn't good enough for the 19th pick. Add in the medical question marks as well as the Alabama records for putting players in the NFL and there are a lot of other options that I would be more excited about.

For my money give me Shazier. He is no where near as polished as Mosley but the upside is much higher. We have enough safe role players on this team, give me some game changers. If there is one guy in the 1st rd I DON'T want it is CJ Mosley.

Thumbs up for taking the time to review tape and offer your analysis. I'm hoping we go another direction at 19 but will feel better about Mosley if he's the pick.

I agree he will be there at 19.

After tale of the tape, we need tale of his medical file.

ryan shazier you say....sounds like the next tale of the tape

Yes! Anxiously waiting on that one. Talk about an explosive player in Shazier! He's a little light but the playmaking ability is undeniable.

I like Mosely and would not be upset if he is picked in the 1st...

Great write up.

I agree with the below analysis...He is smart and has strong fundamentals and his tactically highly proficient in the college game....He will be an average NFL player that canot realistically start for a team until year 3. He will be waste of pick...He lacks explosion, aggressiveness, a mean streak, - smart players do great when they fly around the field looking to rip peoples heads off. This guy was a great college player but in my observation will not be the pro player people hope he will be....Trade down and pick up as many picks as possible. Dolphins should look to get 8 to 12 players out of this draft - ge get 4 lineman 1 rb 1 wr and 2 to 6 defensive players and hope 3 or 4 pan out...

when you talk about upside at lb you are talking about players that lack instincts for the position learning them...good luck...you can be as great a athlete as there is but if you don't read and dx plays you will be late and exposed...it looks great on college highlight reels where you athletically trump everyone you come across but you will carry the same issues with you to the next level...

athleticism without instincts doesn't make up for much...there's nothing wrong with mosleys speed mid 4.6's with instincts are 3 down lbs in the pros especially ones that show the awareness and coverage abilities mosley does...

i don't think he's the next special lb...no...he doesnt have the size or the sheer power but i don't think we are gonna be sitting here saying on a weekly basis " freaking mosleys clean to the ball and late" or "he's lost"

i would say athletically he's more a dqwell jackson but his game as a player and not an explosion athlete is more a jon beason...if you say to me he's close to his ceiling i would say agreed...but at lb upside is about trying to make up for deficiencies...i don't see any athletic limitations here could be aided by the scheme at bama yes he could...but i see too many positives in his game

Nice review. We needed to take a second look at Mosley. I also noticed he is a good blitzer, but he doesn't have the sacks to show for it, but he's getting the designed pressure. It helps to have big tackles in front of him, but I'm not buying what some people say - that he is only a product of the talent around him.
